KEEBRA PARK TOUR DAY THREE AND FOUR.

Day saw the boys head off to Hollywood for the Universal studios tour.

First up we drove around the back lots and saw the movie sets of such iconic movies as Psycho, the Grinch, Jaws and the televison series ...Desperate Housewives. Next up was an encounter with a 3D animation of King Kong that was amazing.

The tour party split in two for the remainder of the day with each group hitting the rollercoasters and doing Keebra Proud. An early dinner at Taco Bell saw the touring group in bed by ten and ready for a day of beach training at Santa Monica.

Our contact in LA was Rob Mathis a 6-5 inch sprint coach and Golds Gym Body building coach. Among his other occupations was that of an "Influencer" for Nike.

This meant that basically Nike gave him clothes and equipment and all he had to do was walk around LA and influence others to wear the same....nice work if you can get it.

We met Rob at Santa Monica steps which are a set of steep stairs that he said would give the boys a good workout and improve their calf muscle stamina.

His rationale was that in games of football, the calves give out before the quads and its no good having strong quads and spent calves..... Anyhow after an hour session the boys were indeed very worked out and we retired to Malibu for some rolls and water.

The evening saw us hit the LA Clippers v New Orleans Hornets NBA game and a special surprise was in store for one of our tourists. In our party was Blake Griffen and for those of you that follow NBA, you would be aware that the Clippers also have a Blake Griffen.

At half time, Robe took our Blake to their Blake and their Blake took of his shirt and gave it to our Blake...which was something quite special.

A downside was that the Kardashians were sitting in front of us watching Khloes husband playing for the Clippers.

They did ask me if id like to hang out but i declined as i do have morals and ethics......Anyhow i digress...we headed home once more and got ourselves ready for the second half of our trip to the East coast....Florida here we come

KEEBRA PARK TOUR DAY TWO

Well day two saw the boys awake to the thrills off a buffet breakfast hotel style and for many of them, this alone seemed to justify the price of the tour.

Pancakes, bacon, eggs and grit (whatever they are) we're wolfed down and 17 happy campers climbed aboard the dodge SUV's as we headed for our first stop....Venice beach and Santa Monica pier.

For those of you unfamiliar with Venice it is the kind of place where hippies and fringe dwellers roller blade along the promenade with parrots on shoulders and monkey's on their backs. Santa Monica pier is also iconic, featuring in both the Dirty Harry movie starring Clint Eastwood and the Tony Hawke pro-skater console game.

The boys shopped and played the arcades before we headed off to the highlight of the day, the college football game at the Rosebowl between Stanford Cardinals and the UCLA Bruins.

As guests of UCLA we had some great seats and witnessed an awesome game. 55,000 Atari college football game is some effort. For those of you unfamiliar with the culture of the game, it was preceded by the popular pastime of tailgating where the fans parked up and turned the car park into one massive BBQ.

After the game we went to a classy Mexican restaurant and the boys ad a heart feed of tacos and burritos. Returning to the hotel there was time fora quick swim before hitting the hay and looking forward to Universal Studios. Part three to follow, with images on the way.

In part three our intrepid travellers encounter King Kong and The Transformers in an action packed Hollywood encounter.

KEEBRA PARK NORTH AMERICAN TOUR 2012

Well after much preparation the Keebra Park rugby league tour of the USA finally got underway.

We left Brisbane at 11am and were soon on the way to LA. Due to the 18 hour time difference we touched down in LA at 6am on the same day as we left and picked up our SUV's.

We then headed to the Marriott hotel to drop of our bags before a session at the LA UFC gym in Santa Monica.

We were met by UCLA sprint coach Rob Mathis who had organised for a professional UFC fighter to take the boys through a few wrestling drills in the octagon.

After training we returned to the hotel for som RnR and an aptly named In And Out burger.

Part two to follow
KEEBRA JUNIORS HOLD OUT CENTRAL QLD REPS.

A great effort this week saw the Keebra Park school sides hold the Central QLD bid Under 14's side to a 16-16 draw and beat the 143's 16-8.

This was a marvellous result given that the CQRL assembled a squad from across Central Qld specifically for this tour and a great advertisement of the effort and focus put in by both the coaches and students on a daily basis.

Well done to the Central Qld boys for some good opposition and see you all next year.
KEEBRA PARK WIN THIRD STRAIGHT NATIONAL SEVENS TITLE

Keebra Park SHS etched its name into the record books this year by notching up a third straight win in the National Schoolboy Sevens comp.

This feat was even more remarkable given that Union is not played at Keebra and the team only had a one day break between winning the QLD title and defending their National crown.

To win the QLD title, Keebra fought off challenges from more fancied heavyweight private schools TSS and Brisbane State High who’s bread and butter is Union and who have considerable resources and facilities that should have swayed the odds in their favour.

However, pride in the jersey, respect for tradition and a willingness to work hard for each other won through on the day and Keebra emerged victorious after a convincing win over St Brendan’s Yeppoon in the Grand Final.

After a brief day of rest the boys backed up and battled through the National Pool stages with wins over the Victorian University school and Westfields Sports High, to set up a semi- final showdown with Marist College Canberra.

A first half rout put paid to Marists chances and Keebra progressed to a Skilled Park clash with Sydney Powerhouse St Gregs.

Racing away to a 19-0 lead the boys looked unstoppable but the nature of sevens saw the Sydneysiders draw level at 19-19 with a minute to play.

A scrambling defensive effort saw Keebra Regain possession and a runaway try to powerful prop Watson Heleta on the final siren gave the Gold coasters victory and a place in the history books.

Well done all involved and well done to the coaching staff and supporters who cheered the boys on throughout the day.

Who knows next year we might put two sides in the competition.
KEEBRA PARK TO HOST CQRL BID TEAM TOURISTS.

Keebra Park will play hosts to teams from Central Qld and Kirwan SHS this week in the traditional end of season trials.

The Keebra Under 14's are looking forward to the challenge of playing a Central QLD rep side who have been assembled from a range of schools and clubs specifically for this tour.

While it will be a daunting prospect for Keebra there is a lot more on the line for the Central Qld boys who will be looking to use this opportunity to consolidate the credibility of their bid to gain a senior spot in the NRL.

Keebra had a solid season in 2012 winning the Broncos "Hancock Cup" and will be looking to continue that form as they head into pre-season training ahead of 2013.

In the other encounter a Keebra 16's outfit will play a Kirwan side who are always strong and who always pose a threat. While these games are trials, both schools have a proud tradition of Rugby League and there will be no quarter given.

Full report to follow.

KEEBRA KEEN ON MORE TROPHIES

It was a trophy fest for Keebra Park this week with the hard work the boys and the coaches have put in on and off the paddock paying dividends in the Grand finals of the respective Broncos competitions.

The 13's coached by Mr Glen Cambell defeated Wavell, Mr Steven's 14's defeated Coombabah, Mr Woolfs Gee Sheild team triumphed over Redbank Plains and Jah Pakau was on hand to collect the Open A's Alan Langer Trophy.

These wins are a credit to all involved and a diagnostic tool that clearly shows that the schools focus on discipline and dedication both in and out of the classroom are really working.

This year saw a policy introduced that stipulated that boys who's effort and behaviour in the academic arena were not up to standard would not be allowed to play Rugby League and the boys not only embraced this concept but made it part of the bigger school culture.

Parents have been very supportive and the boys have learnt that they are in control of their outcomes which in turn has nurtured maturity and gained them results in all aspects of their schooling.

The program has always been more about developing boys rather than winning for winning sake and that makes these finals results even more pleasing. it has been a work ethic and consistent approach that has gotten the boys home when they have often been up against much bigger and more fancied opposition.

These lessons will surely stand them in good stead as they move onto the next stage of their lives whether that be in the sporting or academic realms.

The action turns to Ipswich Jets this Sunday (19th August) with the Open A's playing in a double header to decide the finalists of the National GIO Cup.

ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS

While Keebra Park Open A'S have been busy cementing themselves as the most succesful National Schoolboy side of the last decade with another appearance in the GIO Cup semi-finals against old rivals Endeavour, it is the rest of the school teams who stand on the edge of something just as spectacular this Tuesday night at Bishop Park.

The under 13's, 14's, 15's and the open seconds will all play in the Grand Finals of the various Brisbane Broncos competitions and possibly make 2012 a clean sweep for the small Gold Coast school.

While it is obviously too early to buy a trophy cabinet just yet it is a scenario that has the school buzzing and the boys eager for the games to begin.

In the local schools competition the 13's and 14's have already recorded wins and the Under 16's were victorious in the Titans Cup competition beating the Keebra Open 4ths in a close and passionate encounter.

The man of the match in this game, George Fai also recieved the Bodie Apps medal, which is awarded to the best on field whenever Keebra Park teams play each other in the Open Division in memory of ex-student Bodie Apps who was lost in a tragic traffic accident.

The games on Tuesday kick off at 2-30 pm and it is sure to be a great night of football. Keebra appreciate our dedicated supporters and it would be great to see as many parents and family get along to cheer the boys on.

See you there
ALL QUIET ON THE NORTHERN FRONT.

It was a litle quieter in the Rugby League grandstands of Townsville this weekend with the boisterous chanting of Ignatius Park College replaced with a stunned silenced as the boys in blue exited the GIO Schooolboy Cup at the hands of Keebra Park.

The previous month had seen both Kirwan and Palm Beach Currumbin fall to the Townsville outfit and the Harry Potteresque hoards who descended on Dairy Farmers would have been confident that next to fall would be Keebra Park who were travelling North without their full squad due to players on International duty.

Keebra were in no doubt of what they were up against with the heat, the travel and the home ground advantage all factors that should have seen them as rank outsiders to take out the QLD final but one thing they are big on at Keebra Park is pride in both the jersey and the school and it was this that got the boys home in the end.

Keebra posted the first points in the 6th minute with a try to fullback Delouise Hoeter which was converted by Guy Hamilton but the lead didnt last long with Ignatius scoring moments later to level the scores at 6-6.

A second Keebra try from prop Vili Tuli and a third just before half time to second row Jah Pakau saw the score move out to 16-6 at the break.

Ignatius Park were first to score in the second stanza and at 16-12 the momentum of the game swang back and forth as both sides pressed to take the advantage.

It was however Keebra who proved more stoic in defence and broke the deadlock after a rampaging run down the wing by big prop Richard "Usain" Ene was finished off under the posts by Junior Marsters to put the result beyond doubt.

With seconds left on the clock it was too late for Ignatius Park and not even the magicians wand was going to pull this one out of the fire and as the final hooter sounded the chanting ceased and the grandstand fell silent.......apart from a small group of boys in Keebra Park Jerseys who proudly sang their own song.

Well done boys and well done Ignatius Park for a thrilling final.

KEEBRA PARK WIN SCHOOLBOYS STATE FINAL

Keebra Park win Schoolboys state final

Keebra Park State High School have held off a second-half resurgence from Ignatius Park College to win the GIO National Schoolboys state final 22-12 at Dairy Farmers Stadium tonight.

The Gold Coast school, who had a considerable size advantage over their opponents, led 16-6 at half time but then conceded the first try of the second half to Iggy prop Cade Maloney who barged over from close range for his second four-pointer of the afternoon.

Keebra were kept in their own half for long periods of the second 25 minutes and the Townsville school came close to equalising twice when Coen Hess made it over the line but wasn't able to get the ball down.

A fourth Keebra try, which came three plays after a 20-metre tap after they had stopped Hess for the second time, ensured the visitors qualified for the national semi-finals.

Keebra halfback and captain Guy Hamilton was named player of the match.

The Ignatius Park squad include seven players who are part of the Cowboys' academy squad or hold a scholarship with the club.

Keebra Park 22 (Villi Tuli, Delouise Hoeter, Jah Pakau, Junior Marsters tries; Guy Hamilton 2 goals) Ignatius Park 12 (Cade Maloney 2 tries; Aaron Scolari 2 goals).

BUSY WEEK AT KEEBRA
ourfootyteam logo
It looks like being a busy week at Keebra Park this week with both the junior and senior sides engaging in knockout finals.

The Open A'S will travel to North QLD to take on the in form Ignatius Park team and the junior teams will be playing various opposition in the Broncos Competition.

Heading North will be a test for the Opens who will be without Australian Reps, Jai Arrow and Jack Goodsall who will be on duty for their country against the England Academy.

There is also some particularly pleasing news for the juniors however with the under 13B'S having qualified for the quarter finals via winning the local schools competition.

They will be up against Coombabah 13 A'S and are looking forward to mixing it with the "Big Boys".

The 13 A'S will be playing Wavell on the same day so it will be a big day for the 13's. Well done boys and good luck.

IGNATIUS PARK MEET KEEBRA PARK IN GIO CUP FINAL

GIO CUP 2012 QLD SEMI FINAL

IGNATIUS Park will meet Keebra Park in the Queensland final of the GIO National School Boys Cup after both sides recorded wins in their finals games yesterday.

At Kirwan's Jack Manski Oval, Ignatius Park put on a strong attacking performance in a fiery game where they raced out to an 18-0 lead by halftime.

Palm Beach fought back early in the second half – but it was not enough, giving the Townsville side their chance to play for the state title.

At BMD Kougari Oval, Keebra Park ensured their place in the grand final with a close 14-8 win against St Brendan's (Yeppoon).

The state final will be played as a curtain raiser to the NRL match between the North Queensland Cowboys and Manly Sea Eagles during the Round 22 Close the Gap round at Dairy Farmers Stadium, Townsville, on Saturday, August 4. Kick-off will be at 4pm.

GIO CUP SEMI-FINAL RESULTS:

KEEBRA PARK SHS 14 (Jamian Iroa, John Ogden, Delouise Hoeter tries, Guy Hamilton goal) def St BRENDAN'S COLLEGE 8 (Sheldon Bobbert, Zac Mulholland tries) at BMD Kougari Oval

IGNATIUS PARK 28 (Brandon Pryor, Chris Law, Kieran Quabba, Tristian Nelliman, Valentine Holmes tries; Aaron Solari 4 goals) PALM BEACH CURRUMBIN SHS 6 (Daymeric Pelo try; Sam Harold goal) at Jack Manski Oval
AND THEN THERE WERE TWO

Keebra Park SHS and Ignatius Park will contest the Qld final of the GIO Schoolboys Cup after downing St Brendans Yeppoon and Palm Beach Currumbin resepctively.

Keebra got off to a flying start against St. Brendans but let the Boys from Rocky back into the game off the back of a couple of well worked tries.

It was too little too late for Brendans though and Keebra held on for a deserved 14 - 8 win.

In the other game Iggy Park proved to be too strong for PBC running out 28 - 6 winners.

The final is due to be held in Townsville and we aish all those boys taking part the best of luck.
KEEBRA AND PBC INTO QLD SEMI FINALS
Keebra Park and PBC kept the flag flying for Gold Coast Schoolboy football today with wins over their Brisbane based competition in the GIO National Schoolboy Cup.

Keebra went head to head with Marsden SHS in a first v fourth encounter while second Place PBC took on Wavell SHS who finished the rounds in third spot.

Keebra were slow to get off the mark and after a 6-0 half time win came out to post 3 more unanswered tries in the second stanza.

Ill discipline cost Marsden dearly with two players sent to the bin following an after tackle push and shove in the second half and they never got back into the game.

Experience in these knock out games gos a long way to gaining a victory and once again this proved to be the case with Keebra defending their line well and capitalising on the Marsden mistakes.

In the other game PBC held out a valiant Wavell who came close to snatching the points with a second half come back. the final scores were: Keebra 30 defeated Marsden 0 and PBC 18 defeated Wavell 14

JAI AND JACK GAIN AUSSIE SELECTION
OurFootyMedia
With the conclusion of the ASSRL Under 18 title came the selection of the Australian schoolboys side and Keebra Park is proud to announce the inclusion of hard running winger Jack Goodsall and hard to handle second row/lock, Jai Arrow.

Jai and Jack were standouts in the South coast side that won the recent Queensland titles and both have worked hard throughout the year and thoroughly deserve their selections.

It was a particularly pleasing result for Jack who has progressed from the Keebra Park Open 4ths and continues to improve off the back of a positive attitude and willingness to put his body on the line.

While the tournament is over the school football is only just starting with the South QLD semi-finals set for Wednesday night at Pizzey Park.

So well done boys and heres looking towards the finals of the GIO Cup.
KEEBRA DOWN PBC TO TAKE POLE POSITION

Keebra Park SHS have secured top spot on the ladder as the GIO National Schoolboy Cup moves into the knockout stages.

Facing arch rivals PBC the game once again went down to the wire with Keebra running out winners 20-18.

These games are rarely indicative of the playing capabilities of either side with the crowd input and rivallry often taking over.

Keebra were far more polished but failed to build momentum while PBC relied on opportunistic play and scrambling defence to keep themselves in the game.

The battle of the forward packs was convincingly won by Keebra while PBC proved a handful out wide. The results sees Keebra and PBC positioned one and two on the ladder and the two may not meet again unless they both qualify for the QLD Final.

In other games Keebra seconds downed Harristown from Toowoomba and the PBC Under 15's edged out Keebra.

Two regional qualifiers will make up the top 8 in the National Competition with the knock out rounds scheduled for the first week in term 3. LEARN MORE KEEBRA PARK RUGBY LEAGUE
TITANS CUP FINAL…. AN ALL KEEBRA AFFAIR

It will be mate against mate next Monday as the Keebra Park Open 3rds and the Keebra Park under 16's go head to head in the Titans Cup final.

The Open thirds dispatched Palm Beach Currumbin 40-6 in their semi- final while the Under 16's had a good win over Marymount 20-14.

The win was a particularly good one from the 16's who are often playing against more senior players and rely on good structure rather than size to get over their opposition and this is testament to the hard yards they put it at training with Mr Gould.

The boys have played each other twice this year with the honours split so the game should be a cracker.

The game will be played at Nerang Junior Leagues with kick off at 6pm. The final of the Challenge Cup will kick of at 5pm so there will be plenty of football.

In other games this week the Keebra Open A's will take on Coombabah at Runaway Bay in the second last game of the Langer Trophy. These games seed the Opens for the knockout stages of the National Schoolboy Cup and as such are very important so once again get down and support the boys.

In other news it was good to see Old Boy Tau Tau Moga playing NRL for the Roosters and the Tigers Toyota Cup squad going well in the Under 20 competition.

Following on from the recent Qld rugby league schoolboys Under 18 state Championships the school is pleased to announce the inclusion of Jai Arrow and Jack Goodsall in the QLD side. These boys will head to Port Maquarie to contest the National Championships in July.

Finally well done to Braydon Mcmahon and George Fai who played well in the Qld versus NSW Under 16 curtain raiser to the recent first State of Origin game.

Well done all boys and the coaching staff involved.

KEEBRA PARK GOES INTERNATIONAL
The Keebra Park Sports Specialisation program has always had strong ties with the English Super League with graduates Jamaal Lolesi, Dallas Hood, Greg Eastwood and Rangi Chase all experiencing Football in the UK'S premier competition.

More recently, graduate Sam Moa has been plying his trade with Hull FC and Keebra Park is proud to announce that through a relationship fostered between Hull coach Peter Gentle and Keebra Park coach Greg Lenton, that opportunities now exist for young British players to experience rugby league “Down Under.”

The arrangement will see young school aged student attend the world renowned rugby league nursery on Queensland's Gold Coast with Young Hull FC Academy member and England Youth team fullback, Harry Tyson-Wilson to be the first.

The following Blog by Harry will be a weekly account of his experiences and thoughts as he embarks on this exciting journey.

6 MONTHS DOWNUNDER

2013 has been quite an eventful year in Rugby League for me so far with selection for Yorkshire and inclusion in the England Under 16 years team to play Wales. Now I have been offered another opportunity which involves me flying to the other side of the world and living away from home for six months in Australia.

I have decided to write a short blog each week to keep in touch with family friends and supporters back at home so this is the first instalment of the Harry Tyson-Wilson “6 Months in Australia” Blog.

Well after a long and quite uneventful flight from Manchester to Australia with Emirates Airlines I eventually arrived on the Gold Coast on Monday the 16th April.

I have been a little apprehensive about my six month visit but have been looking forward to seeing Australia and experiencing a different way of life.

My homestay is in Southport which is about a mile from the beach and is a nice big house right next to the school I will be attending.

The School is called Keebra Park SHS and is a school that is well known for both it's academic and sporting programs. One of the main reasons I am here is for the Rugby League Program as I am part of Hull Fc's rugby academy and this is an opportunity I was given by them to assist with my athletic development.

The plan is for me to experience the game in Australia, to take part in the school's training program and then return to England with a few new skills and with the knowledge that only an environment like this can offer.

My house mate is also a member of the sports specialisation program and he is contracted to the Wests Tigers NRL club in Sydney and plays for the Schools Open team. He is from New Zealand and plays Prop.

Last night I went to watch the Opens game and was amazed at the speed of the game and the physical development of the lads here as they all do weights and fitness training most days and it seems to pay off in the game situation.

I've also been given some season passes to watch the local NRL team who are called the Titans so I hope to make use of them. This week on Friday we have training at 6-30 so I'm looking forward to getting involved with that.

This weekend I will have a bit of a look about the place and probably sleep well.

I've been a bit knackered since I got here and no-one seemed to understand what I meant when I got here because they have different words for things.

That combined with my broad accent means that communication is a bit slow to start but I'm sure in a few weeks I will be speaking fluent Aussie and they will be learning a bit of Yorkshire slang.

I've also just found out that I've got my first game tonight in the Titans Cup which is a competition that the Gold Coast Titans put on so that's on Monday and I'll add that to my next blog.

I'll write an update next week and keep you all informed of how I'm going .

PS. I havn't seen a kangaroo yet.
MORE KEEBRA PLAYERS MAKE NRL DEBUT

Congratulations to Keebra Park rugby league program graduate Neccrom Areaiiti who made his NRL debut this weekend for the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Neccrom had been named 18 man for the past three weeks but was elevated to the bench for the round seven clash with the New Zealand Warriors at Mount Smart Stadium.

Neccrom progressed through the schools Rugby League specialisation program in 2008 and after playing Toyota Cup for Wests Tigers in 2009, went on to play in the Warriors Toyota Cup winning side of 2010.

He has been recently playing for North Sydney in the VB Cup and his call up to the Souths squad was a result of his hard work at training and some solid form in the pre-season.

Well done Neccrom.

Reknowned Rugby League nursery, Keebra Park will switch codes this weekend as it prepares to defend its National Rugby Union Sevens Title.

Winning the competition in 2010 was a real achievement for the small State High School from the Gold Coast and a win this year would cement the school as a force to be reckoned with in the seven man code.

The final is to be played a s a curtain raiser to the Hyperion Gold Coast Sevens at Skilled Park and is sure to draw a huge crowd.

Winning the Qld component of the National competition earlier this year, qualified Keebra who will now face off against the best talent from the other States.

The knock out rounds are being held at the Tallebudgera Sports Camp and the Final will be played at Skilled Park later in the day.

KEEBRA TROPHY CABNET HEALTHY
Keebra Park SHS have won Open Boys division of the All Schools touch football competition after a hard fought 5 tries to 4 victory over Rockhampton’s Emmaus College at the White Hills Sporting Complex in Brisbane at the weekend.

Defending their title, this year’s success makes it three straight wins in the competition and cements Keebra’s reputation as the best touch football team in this age group in the State. While Keebra Park has always been considered a traditionally strong rugby league school, many of its past graduates including, Benji Marshall, Corey Norman, Greg Eastwood and the newly crowned English Super League’s “Man of Steel” Rangi Chase, all played touch football for the school and their legacy evident in the latest crop of athletes.

A semi-final win over Bundaberg SHS set up the Grand Final encounter with Emmaus College who had disposed of Kirwan SHS in their semi and were looking like the team to beat, but Keebra’s dogged determination in defence proved the difference on the day and paved the way for the win.

Coach Ben Woolf praised his teams spirit and attitude.

“Some of these boys hadn’t played much touch football before but had the basic skills from their rugby league. Once we worked on a bit of structure I knew they were a chance and they stuck to the game plan and came up trumps” He said.

The boys now have a change of focus as they prepare for the upcoming Australian Schoolboys Rugby Sevens finals in November that are to be played at Skilled Park in conjunction with the World Series Sevens competition.

Keebra Park would like to congratulate ex- student Rangi Chase on both his selection as the Super league “Man of Steel” and also his selection in the English Four Nations Squad for 2011.

Rangi was paired in the halves with Benji Marshall in his initial year at Keebra and as you can imagine they formed a formidable partnership.

The school has always kept a keen eye on Rangi who has carved a very successful career in the English Super League at Castleford and wish him every success in the future.

With the selections of Chris Heighinton and Jack Reed, Rangi is sure to strengthen what is already becoming a very competitive English team and has signalled what could be a very interesting time for Southern hemisphere selectors keen to hold on to home grown talent.

PBC DOWN KEEBRA IN GOLDEN POINT THRILLER.
Story By : dHart
PBC progressed to the National semi- final of the Schoolboy cup with a golden point victory over fellow Gold Coast school Keebra Park last night at Pizzey park.

With both sides locked at 24 all at fulltime the game went to the last minute of extra time before PBC half back slotted the one pointer to secure the win set up a semi-final showdown with defending National champions The Hills Sports High.

The game was its usual self with a few thousand passionate supporters cheering, clapping and banging on the side hoardings as the action on the field see sawed from end to end. PBC came out firing and a two quick tries gave them a tenth minute 12-0 lead and a comfortable buffer.

Then the momentum swang and the boys in Red found themselves pinned to their line as Keebra peppered them with assualt after assualt.

Some gritty defence kept the halftime score at 12-6 but Palm Beach looked busted with their big props finding more reverse gears than an Italian tank in World War two. Keebra were rightfully confident at half time and sought to continue where they left off.

The second half commenced and PBC changed their game plan to a series of scoots from dummy half that caught Keebra by surprise and gave Palmy easy meters up the middle.

This quick play lead to another two fairly soft tries from broken play and left Keebra in disarray.

With 10 minutes remaining and the scores at 24-6 it seemed all over for Keebra but they kept their patience and their shape and somehow managed to pile on a trio of unanswered tries that saw the score with a minute to go at 24-22.

Connor Toia stepped up for the conversion and in front of two thousand hoaaring banging fans, slotted the goal to set up Golden Point.

Once again the momentum had swung and Palm Beach were out on theri feet but once again they dug in and toughed it out and in the dying minute were able to seal the deal with a well taken field goal that gave a final score of 25-24.

Most of Queensland agreed that the new format of the top two Northern QLD schools playing the Top two Southern QLD Schools was an improvement and many more think its time that the ARL got with the program and devised a finals format where the top two QLD schools faced off against the top two NSW schools (instead of the current situation that sees QLD only given one semi-final berth) but then again as someone commented last night......that format might see the end of the PBC v Keebra games and do we really want that........i think not.

So if you happen to get the chance one year why not fly up or down and see a real passionate game of schoolboy rugby league that rival some of the great wonders in this world.

Ive seen the pyramids and they were ok and ive done a trip down the Amazon which wasnt bad ...ive even seen herds of wilderbeests swarm majestically over the plains of the Serengeti and marvelled at the Hanging Gardens of Babylon....but in all honesty they didnt compare.....but if you never never go you'll never never know.

On more serious note all the best to PBC as they fly the flag for Qld and we wish the all the best against defending Champions The Hills Sports High School.

KEEBRA RACK UP 80 OVER A HAPLESS COOMBABAH

They are both on the North End of the Gold Coast and they both have Sports Specialisation in rugby league "programs", but that was where the similarity ended this week as a rampant Keebra Park SHS Opens side racked up 80 points over an outclassed Coombabah SHS in the top flight Broncos competition.

Comming off a loss to Palm Beach, Keebra were always going to be dangerous and it didnt take long for the scoreboard to reflect this dominance with a half time score of 38-0.

Half back Mania Rudolph lead the way with a hat trick of tries and a personal haul of 34 points for the game.
Played in perfect conditions the game turned out to be more akin to a training session as Keebra ran through their plays and worked on variations to existing strategies but to their credit Coombabah did keep turning up as demoralising as it must have been.

The competition now moves into the knockout phase with two more teams joining in to make the 8. Palm Beach seem to be making all the running but any one of five teams seem to have a chance of progressing through to the State Final, so its all set to be a cracking finals series.

In the earlier game the Keebra Seconds had a good win (16-6) over a very tough St Peter Claver outfit who looked well drilled and up for the game.

The next school games will be in two weeks times so watch this space for further updates.

KEEBRA JUNIORS MARCH ON

Keebra Under 16s through to Titans Cup Final Keebra Park Under 16s will play PBC in the final of the Titans Cup after disposing of Robina State High School 16-4 at Nerang this evening.

It was a case of deja vu for Robina who were held to a draw by the Keebra Open fourths side two weeks ago and tonight despite some good structure they just couldn't take the points from a determined young Keebra side.

Evander Guttenbiel, issac Mumberson and Kelly Tate scored the tries and Guy Hamilton kicked the extras.

The Keebra fourths were also due to play but had to settle with being spectators due to opposition, Coombabah SHS forfeiting the fixture.

In other games this week Keebra Park go head to head with PBC in grades 8,9 10 and in the Open firsts and second divisions. These are sure to be hard fought encounters and a taste of what we can expect as we move into the business end of the season.
KEEBRA PARK VERSUS WAVELL FOR HOME COMING

This Wednesday saw Keebra Park take on Wavell as part of Wavell's Homecoming celebrations.

In the Open's game Keebra Park numbed the Wavell side with a quickfire start that saw them take an 18-0 lead within the first 15 minutes. Wavell hit back with a try before the break that was not converted, making a 18-4 halftime scoreline.

The second half saw Wavell add another unconverted try before back to back tries to powerful second row Michael Vella sealed the game for Keebra.

Wavell did cross again in the dying stages of the game for a consolation try but it was too little too late for the Northside Boys and what had been a very happy "Homecoming" turned into a less happy "homegoing" Next week sees Keebra Park take on PBC to decide who will top the group as they head into the knockout stages of the National Schoolboys Cup.

There was a feast of football in all age groups with the following results.

13s Keebra Park won 40 to 8
14s Keebra Park lost 16 to 28
15s Keebra Park won 24 to 16
Open Bs (Gee) Keebra Park lost 12 to 18
Open As Keebra Park won 32 to 14
THE WEEK AHEAD AT KEEBRA
This week has seen a lot of action on the football fields with an even bigger week ahead.

In the local competitions the Under 15B'S disposed of Marymount 56-0 while the under 14B's went down to Marymount 30-0. The Under 13B's also progressed to the local finals with a win over Merrimac.

In the Bronco's Competitions the grade 8 Renouf Cup side had a convincing win over Redbank (72-4) and the grade 9 Hancock Cup team got up 32-6 over Redbank.

Next Wednesday will see all teams in all age groups take on Wavell as part of Wavell SHS's "Homecoming" celebrations.

THE PROGRAM IS AS FOLLOWS:
2PM RENOUF CUP
3PM HANCOCK CUP
4PM WALTERS CUP
5PM GEE SHIELD
6PM LADIES EXHIBITION GAME
7PM OPENS'S LANGER TROPHY GAME

This will be a great day of football and we would like as many Keebra Supporters to get there to cheer on the boys. Remember that you can buy a supporters shirt from the bookshop for $40.

These are quality X Blades jerseys and the book shop is contactable on 55 092 555. (Images of these shirts are available on this site and also on "keebraparkrugbyleague.com.au"
Hope to see you all there.
KEEBRA DOWN COOMBABAH IN RENOUF AND HANCOCK CUPS

Keebra Park kept their unbeaten streak in junior Broncos competitions this week with wins in the Under 13 and 14 age groups over Coombabh State High.

The 13's managed a 42-12 scoreline over with some entertaining structured football while in the fourteens it was a much closer result with Keebra edging out Coombabah by 2 points 20-18.

Both these teams have been training well and the fourteens was a particularly good win over the Coombabah "State" champion side.

In the earlier game the Keebra Struddy's side proved too strong for Sandgate and made it 3 from 3 on a night that was perfect for football.

Next week is the Easter break but there is plenty more football to come in term two so watch this space.
HYBRID STORY FROM KEEBRAHYBRID STORY FROM KEEBRA
An announcement will be made today regarding the formulation of a "hybrid" rugby league/rugby union game.

The game has been in the planning stages for sometime now and whereas previous "hybrid" games consisted of playing half a game of league and half a game of union, this game really is its own code with a unique set of rules.

The brainchild of Sydney entrepreneur Phil Franks in conjunction with Bob Dwyer, Bob Fulton and Mark Ella, the "hybrid" has already been tested with a one of game between Keebra Park SHS and The Southport School which was held in November 2010.

This game allowed for tweaking of the rules and the next game will be held in Sydney between Keebra Park SHS and St Augustines Brookvale at the Brookvale Oval on May 11th at 7pm.

In future it is hoped that this game will be played at the senior levels with announcements expected to be made in the near future.
HYBRID STORY FROM KEEBRA
HYBRID RULES
HYBRID RULES
The game is designed to enable a Rugby Union Team to play a Rugby League Team in a game that suits both codes and is a blend of both codes.

There will be 13 players per side Start of play will decided by a coin toss All starts and restarts of play from the halfway line will require a place kick which must travel at least 10 meters in a forward direction.

While in possession, a team will be required to play Rugby League rules while exiting their own (defensive) end of the field.

Once this attacking (in possession) team crosses the halfway Line (50m), the game reverts to Rugby Union rules.

The referees will call the change of play (League to Union) once the halfway line has been crossed. Union rules will continue even if the side in possession is driven back behind the halfway line or the ball is passed backwards into this area.

The game will continue until there is a change in possession and the rules (League or Union) will apply to the position on the field of the now attacking side.

The ball is not permitted to be kicked out on the full. If this occurs, a penalty will result from where the ball was kicked and the game restarted under Union rules.

Restarts of play using dropkicks from the team’s own (defensive) end of the field must satisfy Union rules with regard to minimum distance travelled by the dropkicked ball.

The attacking (in possession) side has 60 seconds to score or kick. This period will be monitored by a Shot Clock.

Failure to score or kick within this time will result in a turn over of possession. The shot clock applies to both ends of the field and both codes.

There will be no tackle count. This is a precise time frame and any points scored after 60 seconds has elapsed WILL NOT BE COUNTED.

The Shot Clock will be reset for all penalties and restarts of play. Penalty kicks at goal are not included in the 75 second time frame.

There will be two referees on the field of play: one each from Rugby League and Rugby Union.

Scrums will be contested Rugby Union style. The attacking side will have the loose head and feed and the ball is to be fed into the centre of the scrum.

POINTS ARE AS FOLLOWS:
o TRY 5 POINTS
o CONVERSION AND PENALTY GOAL 2 POINTS

THE BIRTH OF RUGBY UNION & RUGBY LEAGUE
The roots of the rugby codes can be traced to early football history, through the playing of ball games which bear little resemblance to modern sports.
William Webb Ellis picked up the round ball and ran with it at Rugby School in England to mark the beginnings of rugby union.

In 1895 rugby football was beset with a schism that resulted in the formation of the Northern Rugby Football Union (NRFU) and rugby league was born.

Rugby league took off in Australia in 1908. A major motivation for the schism was the payment of players. Rugby league players were paid. Rugby union players were not.

Although coming from the same beginnings, the two rugby codes are two distinct traces, breeds, varieties, or species of football. The lessons of history tell us that, as with everything in life, football codes are in a constant state of evolution. Life is about evolution.

The evolution of the rugby codes should be embraced.

100 YEARS LATER…
The motivation for the schism between the codes, which was the payment of players, has now been removed, with rugby union becoming a professional sport in 1995. The reason for the original schism has now become irrelevant.
With players in both codes now being paid as professionals, it is now time for “…a person or group of persons produced by the interaction or crossbreeding of two unlike cultures, traditions…” to emerge.

Now is the ideal time for the two codes to cooperate as one and challenge their competitors, AFL and football who are encroaching into the rugby league and union territory to regain market share in a win win scenario for both codes.
Now is the time for the Hybrid Code.

WILL THE HYBRID CODE REPLACE THE RUGBY CODES?
The Hybrid Code will not replace either rugby league or rugby union. That would be both impossible and completely undesirable. On the contrary, rugby league and rugby union will jointly participate in a single annual and unique event.

The annual event will have the major benefit of bringing substantial additional revenue into each code, revenue which each code would not otherwise be able to have access to.

The Hybrid Code may assist in alleviating the problems associated with the restrictions imposed by the salary cap with the games’ marquee players having representation in this unique annual event.

Other sporting codes such as AFL and soccer are increasingly encroaching on the rugby league and rugby union markets. The Hybrid Code will provide a vehicle for the two rugby codes to tackle this emerging threat on a united front.

The Hybrid Code is an opportunity for the two rugby codes, not a threat to them.

What opportunities does the Hybrid Code have to offer?

For the codes, the opportunity to jointly own a majority ownership in an exciting new concept and to control its progression and development. It also creates a lucrative new revenue stream and may assist in alleviating some of the pressure on clubs to keep their superstar players under the salary cap with a significant one-off annual Hybrid Code match payment.

“The Hybrid Code will never be played without the consent of the rugby league and rugby union governing bodies”.

For the sponsor, the opportunity to partner with a unique and exciting product.

For the major events organisation, the opportunity to bring tens of thousands of visitors to their state.

For the players, the opportunity to test their skills against the best of the best and the opportunity to earn valuable additional income commensurate with their elite status.

And for the fans, pure rugby excitement.

The Hybrid Code will have a comprehensive marketing and media strategy including:
• Support from State Major Events Boards
• Support from the rugby league and rugby union governing bodies
• Support from professional and amateur rugby clubs
• Print, radio, television and online advertising and editorial
• Social media
• Specifically designed website
• Local and international media rights
• Merchandising
• Viral campaign

Some of the most recognisable identities from the worlds of rugby league and rugby union support this concept.

WHAT THE MEDIA HAVE SAID ABOUT THE HYBRID CODE CONCEPT
“A truly Hybrid game would be a significant once in a 100 year event that would be a stadium sell-out, with record television numbers” - Colin Smith, L.E.K. Consulting
“The administrator who knocks back that sort of cash may end up feeling like the drummer who knocked back the gig with the Beatles” - Glenn Jackson, SMH
“It would simply be irresistible television” - Paul Kent, Daily Telegraph
“It’s time to settle things the new fashioned way - head to head” - Richard Hinds, SMH
“People bang on about ANZ Stadium having no atmosphere…but here’s a guaranteed way to turn it into a colesseum on Australia Day. Stage a Wallabies match against the
Kangaroos” - Lote Tuqiri, Sunday Telegraph
“The game would combine the national free-to-air television audiences of the marquee game in league, being the State of Origin, and the marquee game in union, being the
Bledisloe Cup, for a potential national free-to-air audience of over 4 million”
- Colin Smith L.E.K. Consulting

On Wednesday 11 May, 2011 the first ever Hybrid Code match to be played in Sydney will take place at Brookvale Oval on Sydney’s North Shore. The game kicks off at 7:00pm and is free of charge to all spectators. This landmark match will be played by schoolboy sides from St Augustine’s College, Brookvale and Keebra Park State High School, Gold Coast. Both schools are steeped in rugby union and rugby league tradition and have produced a number of marquee players in both codes. The first Sydney Hybrid Code event will serve as a “test case” to demonstrate to the public, corporate and media interest of the Hybrid Code and its validity as an exciting and feasible annual event at an elite level. It is anticipated the event will attract an attendance of 5000 spectators including special invitations to key government, corporate, league and union officials, media and players.

This is your chance to be part of history. What started over 100 years ago at Rugby School in England is now being evolved into something truly unique. Enjoy the spectacle. Be part of the excitement.
Be part of the Hybrid Code.

THE SEASON SO FAR AT KEEBRA

Well as the season starts to gain momentum there as been a great buzz around the school with all teams looking good as they head into the business part of the competitions.

The junior sides have recorded some good wins and this week see themselves up against Coombabah at Southport Tigers.

The Open A's kicked off their campaign with a solid 42-0 win over the fancied Marsden outfit and the Under 15's recorded a great victory against Marsdens 15's. There was a good crowd at the Logan Brothers ground and all present witnessed a fine encounter.

Last weekend (April 10th) saw a combined Opens-Struddys side take on the Northern Rivers Group 18 Representative team and get away with a 20-18 result after a slow sluggish start that saw them 18-0 down in the first half. Well done boys a good comeback and no excuses.

This week has seen the action shift to the hybrid Union/League training that has been going on for 18 months or so now and the upcoming clash with St. Augustines in Sydney. I will keep you posted on that one.

As soon as i recieve some pictures of all the action i will forward them on, so watch this space.

KEEBRA GEARS UP FOR ANOTHER BIG SEASON
Its been a pretty exciting week at school this week with local sport in full swing, Bronco's Competition trials and the recent win in the Queensland Sevens Rugby Championship.

The local competition is into round four and this week the boys will find themeslves up against old rivals Palm Beach Currumbin after already facing Merrimac, Robina, Marymount and Elanora.

The recent midweek trials against Wavell were a good gauge of how the premier teams are travelling and there were some outstanding performances across the board with players staking their claims for spots in these highly competitive teams.

Last Friday the Opens continued their dominance in the Queensland Rugby Sevens Competition with a win against Brisbane Stae High in the Qld final at Suncorp. The game was played as the curtain raiser to the Reds versus Rebels clash and was a great experience for the boys.

In earlier rounds they accounted for St Joseph's College Nudgee and Wavell SHS to set up a final appearancel where they were far too strong for State High, winning 31-19.

The Sevens squad will now head to Sydney to defend their National title against the best in NSW.

A great effort considering that there was no specific training for this event and it was the general fitness and determination of the team that got them the results.

TIGERS ON HAND FOR KEEBRA PARK DEVELOPMENT DAY.

It was smiles all round at Keebra Park this week as the school held its development squad meeting for prospective 2012 grade 8 students.

These meetings provide an environment where the squad can meet and train together to develop freindships that will make the transition from primary school to high school an easy one.

With students from 15 different primary schools in attendance, these ice breaker squad meets are an important aspect of progression along the Keebra Park-Wests Tigers pathway and allow both students and parents to try before they buy into the program.

This year saw Tigers recruitment manager Warren McDonnell, trainer Brian Hider and ex- player and recruitment officer John Skandalis on hand to put the boys through their paces.

The day kicked off with testing and progressed with talks on nutrition and fitness. Skill sessions and games were held in the afternoon and the day rounded off with a tocgh football competition.

Thank you to all parenst and students who attended and looking forward to seeing you all at the second session and in term one next year.

The day also saw the launch of the "KEEBRA PARK" supporters merchandise range that includes a supporters shirt and hat.

These products will be available through the school bookshop and pictures will be posted in the coming days.

Various fashion hoses in London, New York and Paris have shown a keen interest in stocking the range so place your orders ASAP to avoid disappointment.

SEASON 2011 SET TO KICK-OFF
ourfootyteam logo
This week at Keebra Park saw the start of the local schools competition with the Under 13's in action at Elanora and the 14 and 15 years A & B sides trialling against Palm Beach Currumbin.

The 13's were very good in their opening encounter which is reflective of the depth in this age group while the older boys both gave a good showing against PBC which is a good sign for the season proper.

Spencer Hepi was a standout for the 15's and lead them well playing both fullback and in the centres during a hard fought contest.

While both the 14's and 15's managed to get the better of PBC on the day, these games were more a diagnostic tool for the coaching staff and to allow the students to try out in different positions as many have undergone changes in both height and weight that have opened up new possibilities in 2011.

The next few weeks will also see the commencement of trialling in the Open division, the first rounds of the rugby union sevens competition and the 2012 development squad meeting, so all in all it is a busy time for both students and staff.

Congratulations also go out to the representatives in the various Cyril Connell and Mal Meninga Cup squads who also begin competition next week.

The 2012 Los Angeles Tour is gaining momentum with contact being made with De La Salle College and Long Beach High, the two premier NFL schools in California.

These schools both produced six NFL rookies in 2010 and will provide our boys opportunities to interact with their Trans Pacific peers.

BACK TO SCHOOL AT KEEBRA

ourfootyteam logo
With the holidays over and term one well and truly underway , there is a buzz of anticipation as Keebra Park moves towards trials and the season proper.

With an increase in general schools numbers due to the Academic Excellence Program and the success of the Rugby League program there will be increased competition across the board this year and this should equate to even higher quality outcomes.

Seniors training has commenced on Friday mornings and the boys are going well with many taking advantage of the pre-school gym sessions run by strength and conditioning coach Mr Campbell.

An information session was held in week two and parents and guardians were able to ask questions of the coaching staff and chat with medical industry leaders regarding dental, Physio and insurance issues.

After the success of the New Zealand and Polynesian Islands Tour in 2010 there was much interest in the planned North American Tour that hopes to both promote this great game and tap into the cutting edge NFL knowledge that is abundant in the American College System.

2010 was a good year for the rugby league team with the Opens making its 4th National Final appearance in 6 years and Bodene Thompson, Corey Norman and Ben Murdoch all making their NRL debuts.

This year will see the boys defend their spot as Queensland Champions and National Rugby Union Sevens victors in an environment that is becoming increasingly more competitive with many schoolboy football teams vying for pole position.

GOOD LUCK FOR 2011.

KEEBRA BACK HOME SAFE AND SOUND

Well its all back to normal at school today with just memories of a succesful tour to NZ and Samoa.

Although this wasnt really a serious football tour it was a way to thank the boys who had achieved academically and done the right thing. We had a mixed squad with 5 Opens players, 6 under 16's 3 Opens thirds and 4 boys who were in the Open 4ths.

Well done boys for standing up to some very strong NZ representative sides especially Wellington Under 19's.

It difficult to play when your team consists of 13 backs and 5 forwards but you did the school proud and this experience is sure to come in handy in the future.

Thanks to all the host schools and for their hospitality.

Thanks to the school Maraes and to the staff at Princess Tui Inn. Hope to see you all again soon.

Lastly thanks to all the touring party for their behaviour and spirit that made this an awesome tour.
