KEEBRA PARK RIDING HIGH ON BRONCOS SUCCESS

While the Keebra Park Open A side will not progress further in this year’s GIO Cup after a loss to cross town rivals PBC, 2015 has seen the school emerge as the top school in the South Queensland region, winning 3 out of the 6 Broncos competitions.

The Opens finished number one in the Langer Trophy, topping Wavell with an unbeaten season with the Under 15’s replicating this success finishing an undefeated season with a 24-10 victory over Coombabah SHS.

THE FINAL BRONCOS STANDINGS WERE:
Under 13 Renouf Shield: Wavell
Under 14 Hancock Cup: PBC
Under 15 Walters Trophy: Keebra Park SHS
Open B Gee Shield: Keebra Park SHS
Open A Langer Trophy: Keebra Park SHS

With 12 boys from this year’s firsts in grade 11 and eligible for next year and with the obvious talent coming through from the Under 15’s – 2016 looks like another year when the standards at Keebra Park will take yet another step forward, making for a season to savour.

In other news Redbank Plains SHS took out the crown of top school in the Ipswich district with a win in the inaugural Broncos year 7 competition.

REP SEASON WRAP AT KEEBRA PARK

Well the business end of the season in upon us and the knockout stages of the Broncos and GIO competitions loom.

Must win games of 30 minute halves where a simple error can mean a 6 month wait for next season to begin…..

It is a lot of pressure and the ensuing result is absolutely not a true gauge of an individual footballers progress and development.

Some may argue that if a boy is progressing then trophies will follow and it is true that professional teams at the elite level are judged and economically rewarded depending on the outcomes of every single game that contributes to a seasons performance, but those who know can tell you that there are a thousand more variables and a thousand more important outcomes when coaching at the schoolboy level.

Junior coaching is about development. It is about skill development, character development resilience development……. it is about instilling an ethic in a student that is transferable across environments and contexts and is a tool kit that a student can access as situations unfold beyond their schooling careers.

It is this development that is the underpinning force behind the football program at Keebra Park. It is this development that allows our graduates to adapt to situations and succeed in life in a range of disciplines whether they be sporting, tertiary or trade based.

It is that development that sees 18 current graduates playing top class football at the NRL or Super league level.

It is this development that has seen 15 QLD representatives and 4 Australian representatives emerge from this seasons State Championships.

Well done boys on an outstanding achievement.

The league action kicks off next week with the Under 15’s taking on Wavell in a do or die final and the Open A’s taking on Marsden SHS in a must win South QLD Quarter final.

In other news our Juniors will face off against an English touring side next week and our 16s will face some stiff opposition from the boys from Western QLD.

The success of our Tongan academy at Lirpa Loof has led to an initial foray into the unknown territory of Eastern European rugby league in the town of Elbillug and more news will follow.

Enrolment information is available through our new school site (keebraparkrugbyleague.com.au)
KEEBRA EXPERIENCE THE DIFFERENCE

While it is in fact school holidays and the time many use to recharge the batteries there was no such let up for the Keebra Park Open A team this week and it was training as usual.

The staff did however enter into the holiday spirit and took them to a lovely beach called Currumbin where the sun shone, the breakers crashed gently onto the golden sand and the boys were introduced to …….THE STAIRS.

Consisting of 130 stairs and an off road circuit, this session was designed to keep the boys in the right headspace as we enter the business end of the season.

Many ask the secret to success of the program here at Keebra and why there are 18 current NRL players plying their trade in the elite Football competition and another 30 or so working their way through the tiers below and herein lies the answer.

Keebra Park is a development program….its role is to develop players who are capable and disciplined enough to make a go of a career in first grade.

It is about consistency, focus and commitment from both the staff and the boys.

Many programs have a focus on winning trophies for either the coach or the school and while that is no mean feat and a recognition of a period of hard work and discipline over a short period of time, this does not develop the long term determination and consistency required for the graduates of those programs to be able to move ahead and replicate their success in a new environment.

This sort of development needs a much higher level of commitment by all involved and it all builds a culture that cannot be obtained by the pursuit of short term gains.

The boys running these stairs this week taught them that they need to keep themselves healthy and fit as a lifestyle, that they need to be punctual, that they are part of a team and part of a culture and who knows when they will need to draw on this experience when the going gets tough (as it undoubtedly will) as they chase their sporting dreams.

In other news congratulations to all the boys who contested the recent Under 15 National Championships in Penrith with special mention to Geordie, David and Tana who were selected in the Australian Schoolboys merit side. (Photos to come)

The Keebra Park Opens finished first in the Broncos Langer Trophy which is a seeding competition for the South Qld knockout component of the National GIO Cup.

It and not however as some of the more delusional amongst us would have themselves believe the competition that decides the best team in the Qld, The Country and the known Universe as mapped by the Star Ship Enterprise.

This seeding will see Keebra up against Marsden in a term 3 week two knockout while second placed Wavell take on Coombabah, Third and fourth seeds Ipswich and PBC take on two qualifying sides as yet to be decided.

Full placings were 1. Keebra 2. Wavell 3. Ipswich 4. PBC 5. Coombabah 6. Marsden
The under 13, 14 and 15 sides are also set to contest their various finals and full reports will be available as they come to hand.
KEEBRA FLICK THE SWITCH

With chants of I..P..P…Y……I…P…P…Y, the much anticipated Keebra Park versus Ipswich SHS under 14 game began…… However it was Keebra who were H..A..P…P..Y when they came away with a much needed confidence boosting win.

The Keebra 14's have produced a mixed bag of results over the past month, much of it due to a lack of self- belief and a few lapses of concentration that have seen score-lines blow out and results go against them.

Once again this week the boys took the field with a somewhat depleted side but managed to complete their first four sets that laid a platform for two quick fire tries.

This flurry of scoring seemed to unsettle the Ippy boys and although they are a very capable side they never managed to get their heads back in the game.

It was a pleasing win for Keebra as they faced off against former students who now wear the Blue and Purple of Ipswich.

Some solid defence by William, TJ, Eli and Roma was complemented by some hard metres gained by Keenan, Noah and Bryson.

The centres and wings were in safe hands with Phoenix, Jordan, Dre and Luffy proving hard to beat. The forwards were directed well by Lennox with Keoni and Raven steering the boys in the attacking zone while Wallace and Logan provided interchange options.

Next week is a bye for the 14's and then its knockouts.

In other news good luck to the 9 boys contesting the Under 15 National Championships and lets all get down to Southport Tigers next Wednesday as the Open A side take to the field against the Ipswich SHS Opens.
KEEBRA PARK SWING THE SWORD IN SUPER SIX

As the mists rose from the dewy grounds, a hundred loyal warriors disembarked their carriages and strode steadily into enemy territory.

They were ready to do battle.

The Northern enemy held the high ground but the Coast dwellers had been here before and knew that with a steady hand and by holding firm they would emerge victorious.

While it may sound like a scene from Game of Thrones, it was in fact the Wavell Homecoming round of the Broncos Super Six and with pride and a spot at the top of the table on the line it would make Game of Thrones look like little less than the episode in Neighbours when Json Donovan argued with Craig McCloughlin over who had stolen his pencil sharpener.

Keebra came into the game as favourites having disposed of Coombabah and Marsden while Wavell wore the tag of the ones to beat having shown well as the Met North team at the recent QSSRL Sate carnival at Arana Hills.

However before the main game there was the much anticipate clash of the juniors across the 13, 14, 15 age groups and the Open B game where a glimpse of the future of both “Programs” would be there for all to see.

Game one and two saw Keebra somewhat ambushed with the younger boys unfamiliar with the big crowds, big band and carnival atmosphere that is “Homecoming”. The 13s went down 18-10 and in quick succession the 14's followed them on the wrong end of a 32-4 scoreline.

These boys will be better for the experience and come back bigger and stronger as always.

In the Open B game there were some ferocious early collisions and when the game settled down it was Keebra on top and this is where they stayed until with a final second try and conversion, Wavell managed to draw the game and save face in front of a growing parochial crowd.

The Keebra 15's were always going to be difficult to beat with 9 Qld players and Wavell were considered the best chance so this game was probably as much anticipated as the Opens game.

An arm wrestle ensued and no side really managed to gain momentum with mistakes and poor last tackle options seeming to be the flavour of the day. As the game progresses however Keebra did manage to create more opportunities through consistent completion of sets and ran out well deserved winners with an 18 point margin.

In the Open division Wavell and Keebra would have to be the two most consistent teams over the past 5 years with Keebra managing to execute when it counted and Wavell often failing to capitalise on opportunities.

Going into this game Keebra were down three of their key players but the attitude has always been that there are no excuses with plenty of depth and opportunity presenting itself to the boys who got the call up.

The game kicked off and sustained pressure lead to a half time score line where Keebra were rarely not in control and a 12 nil half time score.

Wavell did put a few attacking sets together early in the second half but a try to Keebra at the midway point put the kybosh on any Wavell hopes of a comeback and the final 18-10 result was a fair reflection of a game that to some extent was spoiled by slippery conditions.

As hoards dispersed and the Coast dwellers returned to their own lands they were content and the mission had been completed. It was said there were celebrations in Westeros like never seen before.

On a more serious note it must be said that the entire Wavell school were fantastic hosts, and it was a privilege to be involved with such a well run and attended event.

In other news Palm Beach Currumbin went down to Ipswich SHS 10-6 and batteries last longer if you turn your lights off.
More news to follow including a rep wrap where we will interview the 11 boys who made the under 15 and 18 Qld sides.
GIO WRAP ROUND ONE
Round One saw Keebra face off with South Brisbane School Marsden in what was an anticipated rematch of one of last year’s quarter final.

Keebra went into the game with a number of students finding their feet and forming combinations and while the 28-16 result was pleasing, it was the more of an indication to the coaching staff of where the work needed to be done on the training paddock.

In the Opens B’s Keebra got up 54-4 with a dominant structured display.

The depth in this team that fielded a number of grade ten boys, bodes well for the future of the program here at Keebra Park.

The 15 A’S continued where they left off last season and posted a 70-0 thrashing of Marsden who while were competitive, seemed to lack structure and if a cliché was needed were “ONE OUT “ at best.

ROUND TWO

Round two moved to Southport Tigers and a game against Coombabah SHS.

Once again this was a highly anticipated game with a lot of back yard chatter regarding the strength of the Coombabah side.

The past two years has seen the school align itself with the Titans and recruit heavily from both local and interstate stocks and this year is perceived to be the most balanced side they have put together in the past three years.

From the kick off an arm wrestle ensued with both sides going tit for tat and a 6-4 Keebra scoreline after 8 minutes but sadly for Coombabah that’s as close as they would get with Keebra streaking away to a 30 point lead before half time.

Hat tricks to Tyrone Roberts and Jesse Arthurs and tries to Ethan Paikea and young gun Suia finished the rout and saw the home side victorious 52-16.

Lessons to be learnt here are the proverbial. ”You can lead a horse to water but you cannot make him drink”

Results are built on discipline and commitment and congratulations to the Keebra boys for showing that continued determination both on and off the field.

The 15’s went into their encounter with a depleted side as the rested 4 of their South coast players who gained spots in the Queensland Maroons side. They struggled to build pressure early on but once they had weathered the initial light storm (light shower) they managed to regain their structure and won out at the end to continue on unbeaten.

A FULL SOUTHCOAST REP WRAP IS TO FOLLOW SHORTLY AFTER THE UNDER 18 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
KEEBRA PARK KICK OFF 2015

Welcome back to 2015 and what looks like being another fantastic year of schoolboy football.

While the season proper does not kick off until week two in term two the usual preparations have been underway since term 4 2014 and the boys are working hard and looking focussed and disciplined.

This year Keebra will run two open sides, An A side in the Bronco’s Langer competition that flows into the GIO Cup and a seconds side that will Contest the tier two trophy.

The 15’s will play in the Walter’s Cup with the 9’s and 8’s in the Hancock and Renouf competitions respectively.

This year we also welcome the grade 7 cohort into high school and they will play a gala day of football that determines the teams who progress through to the wider, Metropolitan finals.

In representative news we are pleased to announce the continued success of our graduates with 14 students now taking up regular positions in a plethora of NRL teams. (See the Graduates page to see just how many boys are successfully working their way through the ranks.)

The latest being Kenny Edwards at Parramatta, Kurtis Rowe and a resurgent Agnatius Paasi at the Titans.

In representative news 9 Keebra Boys were successful in gaining spots in the South Coast Under 18 squad set to contest the Queensland finals in May and 6 boys made the Under 15’s side. (Pics and story to follow).

Recent trials have seen the Opens take on competition from interstate as well as locally and the squads are beginning to take shape. Competition is fierce as always and this has bred a real discipline and determination that has manifested in hard work and a real commitment to training.

Supporters gear is always available from the school bookshop so lets all get behind the boys this year and make 2015 another year to remember.

KANGAROOS TRAINING WITH KEEBRA PARK

The Four Nations may make for what has already been a long season for representative players but it also presents opportunities for those in the wider rugby league community to see the elite players from across four distinct, proud nations doing what they do best on the world stage.

One such opportunity presented itself last week with staff from Keebra Park invited to Kangaroos training at Suncorp where the Keebra Coaches were able to network and learn from the training and management staff of the National team.

It was a welcome break for Junior development co-ordinator Jade Hounsell who has been hard at work over the past 9 months with the various development days and grade 7 and 8 activities we run at the school.

“Attending this session has been a very worthwhile experience, and one where we are able to pick up invaluable coaching experience from the very best in the industry” She said. “We like to keep at the forefront of schoolboy rugby league and it is through opportunities such as this that many connections are made and much knowledge and experience gained” She added

Keebra Park graduates are among those in this year’s competition with Issac Liu and Sam Moa donning the Blue and White of Samoa while Greg Eastwood and Bodene Thompson will be representing the Kiwis.

Keebra Parks next development day is on at the school on the 13th November and is open to all boys considering joining the program. For more information please call Jade on 0423120709
