KEEBRA PARK PRESENTATION

2013 has been the most successful year for the Keebra Park rugby league program since its inception some 30 years ago.

Wins in all age groups of the Bronco's competitions, a fourth National Rugby Union Sevens Crown and a victory in the incredibly hard to win National Gio Schoolboys Cup final have meant there have been celebrations aplenty and a thoroughly deserved feeling of pride buzzing around the school.

This week however saw the boys achievements celebrated on a more formal level with ARL representative Jamie McCormack presenting Grade 8 captain Lazayrth Sua with a cheque for $10000 on behalf of the school.

Laz played an integral part in the Under 13's thrilling grand final win over Coombabah SHS, delivering a passionate pre-game speech that laid the platform for the Keebra victory and that embodied the spirit and determination that the school has become renowned for.

The holidays are almost upon us and it's time for reflection and rest before the 2014 season starts in earnest. The successes of 2013 have made Keebra Park an even bigger target in 2014 but our philosophy of “ Consistency and innovation” will stand us in good stead.

Success breeds envy and envy leads to irrational behaviour …….. irrational behaviour is no match for consistency.

Seasons Greetings
KEEBRA GRADUATES FORM LEAGUE OF NATIONS AT THE RLWC

As the RLWC heads into the quarter finals stages and with a feast of pool games already behind us it has been pleasing to see the presence of no less tha 6 program graduates plying their trade and keeping the Keebra Park flag flying.

2013's big improver, prop Sam Moa and Greg Eastwood are doing New Zealand proud whilst that good English Lad Rangi Chase is proving to be a pivotal piece in The "Whites" bid for a finals spot, Dean Parata deserves his spot in the Italian squad and big Ben Murdoch is proudly representing the Tongans.

One lesser known but now on the radar graduate is the USA prop Lester Solai who is a giant of a man who graduated in 2007 and after stints in rugby union and basketball seems to have found his niche in league.

With Richard Kingi and Dion Taumata playing union in France and Italy respectively, there really is an international flavour to 2013 and this highlights the range of opportunities open to program graduates.

2014 is already gearing up to be a good year with a plethora of quality new recruits enrolled and hoping to follow in the footsteps of their idols.

Its also time to say goodbye to our graduates for 2013 and wish them all the best as they head of to tackle the Holden Cup trials at various clubs.

Watson Heleta, Hala Masila,Marion Seve, Te-Maire Martin, Lamar Liolavave, Sione Alofi and Jamion Iroa are sure to be welcome additions and names to watch out for at Wests Tigers whilst, O'Shae Tuiasau will bolster the stock at the Titans.

Workhorse Kelly Tate will head to Sydney and the Dragons and his attitude and determination will be an asset to the Red and Whites and prove to be an astute signing ... well done boys.

A quick word of advice to those who remain to contest the spots for 2014 .... only one mince pie ... "a minute on the lips ..... a lifetime on the hips" and remember .... just like he has for the past 12 seasons...our strength and conditioning coach ... Mr Campbell will be waiting for you .....

KEEBRA PARK IN ALTITUDE TRAINING FOR 2014
Story By : Darren Hart KPRL

As we all know junior rugby league can be a competitive business and while 2013 was a highly successful year with Keebra Park having wins all the way through from the under 13's to the Open division and even winning a fourth consecutive National rugby Sevens Title on the way, now is not the time to relax ..... it is the time to keep one step ahead of the pack and keep working for the season ahead.

Bikram yoga was the extra training tool added to 2013 and although the series of 26 postures proved most beneficial in post game recovery, we have stepped it right up this pre-season with high altitude training at Everest base camp.

It was a hard slog but after a hearty breakfast of 37 Weetbix the squad put on a few extra jerseys and made the trek up the camp via the Anapurna circuit.

The benefits of altitude training are tenfold and we hope it pays dividends in the season ahead as there is sure to be some stiff competition both locally and interstate.

Well its soup o'clock here in Nepal so have a great pre-season and don't forget boys ...... beach runs have begun and there are spots up for grabs.

PRE GAME | 1st HALF | 2nd HALF | CELEBRATIONS |

KEEBRA BURN THE PATTIES

(BUT THIS IS FOOTBALL NOT MASTERCHEF)

Those at the game will forever remember the dynamic duo who made up the Keebra cheer squad at this years GIO National Schoolboy Cup Grand Final. On the left was the legendary Mrs Vela who has been ejected from much better stadiums than Kogarah and on the right was a newcomer in the shape of “The Man in the Green t-shirt”.

Between them were the massed drums and pipes of St. Patrician Brothers Blacktown with 800 supporters attired proudly in Blue and Green.

While the boys from Pats definitely took out the pre-game cheer contest with wonderful renditions of the “Okey Pokey” and a version of “When the Saints go marching in” that started with the following intro….

“Knock Knock”
“Who’s there?”
“Wendy”
“Wendy who?”………..

It was the man in the green t-shirt who emerged victorious with his “Keebra Park is on Fire” and “We are having Patties for dinner” chants that will reverberate around the foreshore for decades to come.

However I digress and it wouldn’t really be one of my match reports if I didn’t…..so on with the show.

Patties came out of the sheds looking strong……even their mascot Super Pattie looked strong and they commenced their warm up with a show of athleticism rarely seen outside of the professional ranks.

They leapt, they caught, they kicked and they ran and put on a great display for their fans and truth be told it even lead to some doubt creeping into the lower reaches of this spectators mind.

Meanwhile Keebra ran through their traditional warm up with traditional focus and when all was warm they headed back to the sheds.

Being privy to the inner workings of the Keebra Program I witnessed the pre-game message and as I looked around the room I could see the message was well received, the boys were focussed and they were here for business…we were in for an epic game.

As the game progressed, Patties probed and prodded they earned repeat sets and once more probed and prodded. Where against other opposition they had found gaps and the try-line, no quarter was given and the initial forays ended up in the unfamiliar surroundings of the touch line.

In contrast Keebra’s initial forays lead to two tries to bustling centre Watson Heleta who while as capable as right centre Marion Seve, had gone under the radar in recent weeks as Marion gained the lion’s share of the football.

This turn of events seemed to shock the boys in Blue and Gold and left them behind the posts scratching their heads and asking themselves questions.

“Why can’t through?, how did they bust our line? …who is the man in the green t-shirt singing about his dinner?”

Another quick fire try to flying winger Taylor Walters after a disallowed try to man of the match Temaire Martin compounded this self doubt and whilst the Patties boys did cross for a four pointer minutes before half time, they entered the sheds at 16-4 down and in a world of unfamiliar pain.

The second half began much as the first had ended with Mrs Vela dancing the man in the green t-shirt singing and Keebra crossing for another four pointer.

By now the Patties band had ceased banging their drums and when star Holden Cup fullback Watene- Zelesniak was rested it was a sign of a conceded defeat. Tempers flared when Keebra copped one too many head highs and after a brief push and shove, that compounded the fact that the Gold coasters were not a team to be bullied the game resumed with Keebra once more crossing the stripe.

The final score of 28-4 was an endorsement of what is sometimes overlooked in schoolboy football, the fact that a team who plays basic old fashioned football where the ability to defend your line is equally as important as the ability to run a structured offense and where discipline and the willingness to put your body on the line for the team, is more than a match for a team of gifted individuals who rely on their own ability to break the line through brute strength.

Having witnessed the season of Queensland schools football also leads one to wonder why there is only one Qld qualifier for the National semi- finals and three NSW teams. By my reckoning, PBC, Wavell, Kirwan, Marsden and St Brendans would all have made a significant impression in the finals series and is something for organisers to consider for the coming seasons.

While it has been a successful season for Keebra Park, Patties should be congratulated on their effort and school spirit and they really gave the National final the atmosphere it deserves.

Good luck to all schools in this years competition and thanks to GIO for their support and heres looking forward to 2014.

Postscript: Mrs Vela was last seen in the queue for the “Samoa has got Talent” contest and the man in the green t-shirt was seen heading into Macdonalds to make good on his statement that he was having patties for dinner

…..with special sauce, cheese and a sesame seed bun.

KEEBRA PARK CREDENTIALS GO ON LINE

THEY'RE the "little school in the back of Southport" punching above their weight to make a mark at the national level.

And Keebra Park High will continue their battle against rugby league's heavyweights in Sydney this afternoon when they take to Kogarah Oval in the GIO Cup national schoolboys final against Patrician Brothers Blacktown.

After winning the Queensland final and knocking out Illawarra Sports High in their national semi last week, Keebra advanced to the championship decider where they will attempt to win their second Australian schools title.

"To win and make an Australian final is just everything for these schoolboys, it's the ultimate," Keebra coach Greg Lenton said.

"I've always said we're a little school in the back of Southport and we probably bat above our average and finally get there and end up playing sides riddled with representative players."

Keebra's elite rugby league program and the school's link with the Wests Tigers have led to accusations the school loads its program with outsiders but that cannot be said of today's team, with 10 of the players having come through the program from Year 8.

They are some of the best young footballers in Australia, with 10 of the side - Lamar Manuel-Liolevave, Marion Seve, Sione Alofi, Te'marie Martin, Watson Heleta, Jameon Iroa, Hala Masila (all Wests Tigers), Keanu Dawson, O'Shae Tuiasau and Braydon McMahon (Titans) - already contracted to NRL clubs.

Keebra face a tough task today, with Patrician Brothers boasting several Penrith Holden Cup players and Australian schoolboys representatives, including classy fullback Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, second-rower Tyrell Fuimaono and centre George Jennings, brother of NRL star Michael.

Success would continue an outstanding year for Keebra, which swept all Broncos Challenge competitions - the under-13 Steve Renouf Shield, under-14 Michael Hancock Cup, under-15 Kevin Walters Cup and under-18 Allan Langer Trophy and Andrew Gee Shield - for the first time in history.

Keebra grand final side: 1 Sione Alofi, 2 Jameon Iroa, 3 Watson Heleta, 4 Marion Seve, 5 Taylor Walters, 6 Te'maire Martin, 7 Braydon McMahon, 8 JJ Felise, 9 Junior Marsters, 10 O'Shae Tuiasau, 11 Lamar Manuel-Liolevave, 12 Hala Masila, 13 Kelly Tate. Interchange: 14 Jordan Scott, 15 Keanu Dawson, 16 Jemille Isaac, 17 Tewharangi Aranui.

KEEBRA GET SHOT AT SECOND MAJOR TITLE

KEEBRA Park will play for the right to be crowned the best schoolboy side in the country after beating Illawarra Sports High 38-18 in their GIO Cup semi-final at Pizzey Park yesterday.

Keebra overcame a nervous start and a poor ending to the first half to reach their sixth national schoolboys final.

They will take on Patrician Brothers College Blacktown next Wednesday in Sydney, looking to add to the title they won in 2009.

The scoreline flattered the Gold Coast side, who conceded two tries in the last five minutes before the break to allow their rivals back into the match.

After setting up an 18-4 lead through tries to winger Jamion Iroa, halfback Brayden McMahon and fullback Sione Alofi, Keebra paid for a patchy defensive lapse, with Illawarra clawing the deficit back to six points at half-time.

``We just lost our way a little bit and I think the nerves got to us a little bit in the first half,'' Keebra coach Greg Lenton said.

``A lot of these guys are playing 20s football (Holden Cup) and play a lot more football than we do.

``There's always a few nerves there and that showed in the first half. We didn't defend as well as we needed to and we just didn't protect our lead.

``We had some discussion at half-time about that and they came out in the second half and turned it around.''

Centre Marion Seve's try in the opening minutes of the second term pushed the lead back out to 12 points, although the visitors hit back, capitalising on another Keebra mistake.

The Gold Coast boys tightened the screws in the final 20 minutes, picking up their defensive intensity and completing their sets better to shut Illawarra out of the match.

Workaholic lock Kelly Tate led the Keebra defence with some big hits, setting the tone for his fellow forwards, the Coast boys forcing errors which allowed them to seal the match with three unanswered tries in the final 15 minutes of the match.

Winger Jamion Iroa notched a hat-trick by adding a second-half double and captain Lamar Liolavave sealed man-of-the-match honours with his try from a neat short ball from five-eighth Te Martin running on the last tackle.

THE BATTLE OF HASTINGS

While not quite as epic as its namesake event in 1066, Keebra Park fought its very own battle at Pizzey Park today with Illawarra Sports high lead by St George Holden Cup player, Jackson Hastings proving to be a difficult opponent to overcome.

Hastings and fellow Australian schoolboys squad member Tom Freebairn formed the backbone of an Illawarra side who had successfully overcome Sydney schools, Hunter, Bass and Holy Cross to take their place in the Gio Schoolboys Cup Semi and were the form team coming into the clash.

Keebra had downed, Marsden, Kirwan and St Brendans in do or die knockouts and although considered underdogs for this encounter had developed a reputation for fitness and determination.

Illawarra spent the morning playing beach cricket, topping up their tans and working of the parmiganas from the night before but they were under no illusions that the holiday was over when Keebra crossed the stripe early in the game to open the scoring.

They replied with a try of their own soon after and the tit for tat scoring saw the Keebra enter the sheds with an 18-12 lead at halftime.

The second stanza opened along much the same lines and an arm wrestle ensued with neither side able to really stamp their authority however a 45th minute flurry of Keebra pressure saw them push out to a 32-18 lead and put the game beyond Illawarra's reach.

A knock on over the line and a Liolavave try called back for a forward pass would have seen the score blow out but as the final siren sounded, the 38-18 final score line was indicative of a game that featured some passages of open play with both sides happy to push the pass out wide.

Keebra's Australian centre Marion Seve bagged a double while Jamion Iroa went one better with a hat trick.

Martin Meredith presents Lamar Manuel-Liolevavewith gio most trusted player chqKelly Tate was relentless in defence and Lamar Liolavave was awarded the GIO "Most Trusted Player" award.

Keebra have a short turn around before the Grand Final clash with Patrician Brothers Blacktown next Wednesday (18th) at Kogarah oval in Sydney. Special thanks to Burleigh Leagues for hosting this event.

HUGE WEEK OF FOOTY FOR KEEBRA PARK
Story By : D HART KPRL
Apprehension had filled much of the week around the local High Schools with self doubt, anticipation and nerves just some of the emotions evident as the Bronco's competition Grand Finals loomed.

Keebra Park had earned the right to contest all three finals with hard work on the training field and discipline in the classroom paying off and faced stiff opposition in the 13 and 14 age groups against highly regarded Coombabah sides whilst in the 15's they were up against PBC who are always formidable opponents.

The opening encounter in the under 13's Steve Renouf Shield, had been highly anticipated with Coombabah boasting a number of QLD players and going unbeaten during the rounds.

The Keebra boys knew the opposition strengths but also knew their weaknesses and although considered the underdogs, were confident in their own abilities. Any lingering doubts were put to rest with Captain Laz Sua, delivering an epic pre-game speech that left no doubt as to what the game meant to him and what he expected from his team mates ..........

"If we are winning we will not give up... if we are losing we will not give up... fear is a choice and fear is not part of Keebra Park and it is not part of me ... i will tackle my hardest ......... "

This speech set the tone for the opening exchanges and Keebra posted the first points. Coombabah responded and lead 10 - 8 at half time.

The second half saw Keebra dig deep as they posted two more tries which effectively put Coombabah to bed and secured a gallant victory.

The Coombabah contingent were speechless as the siren sounded to end the game but any sounds they may have made were well and truly drowned out by the jubilant Keebra boys who's win will go down in the annals of the school's rugby league history books as one of its finest wins and a thoroughly character building experience.

After this clash, the under 14's Michael Hancock Cup was a little bit of a let down with the 14's posting a 30 - 6 win off the back of some well executed set plays.

Consistency and discipline combined to thwart some late Coombabah offense and as the final whistle blew the evening was beginning to take on a carnival atmosphere with the waft of a clean sweep firmly in the air.

The third game was an under 15's "Kevin Walters Cup" clash against the Palm Beach Currumbin "Reds" who were a big side and well drilled as always.

Keebra's advantage though was a team who have been together since grade 8 and who trusted each other to get the job done. The game was fast and furious and whilst the final score blew out to 26 - 0, this isn't really indicative of the competitive nature of the encounter and Palm Beach can hold their heads up high.

These results round off a good week for Keebra Park who also added the GIO Schoolboy Cup Qld Champions title to their haul.

Whilst we like to celebrate our successes and are sometimes a little tongue in cheek in the process, these results are indicative of the hard work that both the coaches and students put in on a weekly basis and are not easy won.

The program at Keebra Park is built around discipline and focus both on the football field and in the classroom and all involved should be proud of their efforts.

The competitive edge at Keebra Park is gained through consistent effort and discipline and is part of the overall culture of the school..... results don't "just happen" The next challenge for the boys is the Open A team up against Illwarra Sports High from Woolongong which will be played at Pizzey Park on the 10thof September.

KEEBRA PARK FIGHTBACK AS COACH CALLS FOR TITLE EFFORT

KEEBRA Park mentor Greg Lenton has warned his side will have to lift their game if they are to have a chance of winning the GIO Cup national title.

Keebra snared back-to-back Queensland titles in the prestigious schoolboys rugby league competition with their 28-14 win against St Brendan's College at Wynnum yesterday.

While Keebra pushed the lead out to as much as 28-6 in the second half, Lenton was unimpressed with an undisciplined first-half performance and let his troops know in no uncertain terms at the break that their performance had been lacklustre.

"We decided that we just wouldn't stick to everything we learnt this year and we played some terrible football," a frank Lenton said.

"We were very lucky that a couple of things went our way and we got out of it."

Keebra led their Yeppoon-based rivals 12-6 at half-time but squandered several scoring chances in some "terrible decisions" -- something that surprised Lenton given his team's regular good attitude, discipline and work ethic.

And the veteran coach did not spare his charges' feelings at the break.

The frank discussion led to a second-half turnaround, with front-rower JJ Felise leading the way, laying the platform for his team to follow.

Hooker Junior Marsters was named man of the match for his service around the ruck, while Braydon McMahon, Lamar Liolavave, Talor Walters, Jamion Iroa and Marion Seve scored tries to set up a national semi-final showdown against Illawarra Sports High at Pizzey Park on September 10.

Lenton praised the individual efforts of players such as Felise for "pulling the game out of the fire".

"In this particular game, we didn't work for the win," he said.

"We worked defensively but we weren't smart with our win.

"If we go out and play that sort of football against Illawarra Sports High, it will be all over.

"Without any doubt whatsoever, we will be punished very badly."

KEEBRA INTO 9th SCHOOLBOY CUP FINAL

Wests Tigers development school Keebra Park State High School continue to excel at schoolboy level, qualifying for the Queensland final against St Brendans.

If Keebra, who feature another crop of future Wests Tigers stars, take out the Queensland final on Tuesday they'll then face Illawarra State High to qualify for the GIO Schoolboy Cup final.

Wests Tigers will bring six players to Sydney in 2014 to enter the Club's development system.

Wests Tigers Recruitment Manager Warren McDonnell paid tribute to the School's program.

"It's been immensely valuable," said McDonnell. "It's a fantastic partnership, you only have to look at the players we've gotten from them over the years.

"They run a fantastic program. Greg Lenton is doing a great job, aided by Glen Campbell who does a fantastic job as strength and conditioning coach.

"They've got great staff around them.

"It's a great partnership that will continue into the future."

The Wests Tigers work with Keebra Park to ensure the highest possible level of development for the young players.

"We bring the coaches down, we have our camp in January and spend time with the coaches and players," said McDonnell.

"We also send people up there to get involved as well.

"All credit goes to the people at Keebra, they're the ones who do all the hard work."

While fans see the results of the development as performance on the field, Keebra also aim to develop the players as quality young men.

"That's the whole idea of it," said McDonnell. "Their discipline is fantastic.

"They get a good education.

"They don't let the players waltz through just because they play rugby league.

"They're well rounded, even the kids who don't make it in footy, get a good grounding for their future careers.

McDonnell has seen the likes of Benji Marshall, Ben-Murdoch Masila and Rangi Chase come to the Wests Tigers from Keebra park, but is especially excited about this current crop of young players.

"It's hard to single anyone out, because as a group they're six of the most talented kids we've had," said McDonnell.

"I'm really excited about Marion Seve. He's the Australian Schoolboys centre.

"He reminds me of a younger Steve Renouf. That's a big call, but he plays with that style of play.

"We've got a group of six which also includes Lamar Liolevave, TeMaire Martin, Sione Alofi, Watson Heleta, Hala Masila."

"As a group, I'm really excited about them."
KEEBRA DOWN KIRWAN IN QLD SEMI-FINAL

Tuesday afternoon saw ist placed South Qld seed Keebra Park take on second placed North Qld qualifier in the Queensland semi-final of the GIO CUP at a windy Kougari oval.

Keebra started the game well and after thwarting a series of opening attacking plays by Kirwan, posted the first try of the game after a bustling run by centre Marion Seve.

Kirwan replied with a try of their own and another Seve try to Keebra, saw the Keebra boys head to the sheds with a 10 - 4 lead.

The second half saw Keebra run with the wind and flurry of tries soon extended the Gold coasters lead to 22 - 4.

Kirwan dug deep in the middle of the second stanza and came up with the next points to leave the game poised for a big finish at 22 - 10. Towards the back end of the match however, the superior fitness of Keebra shone through as the added two more scores to give a final result of 34 - 10.

The game was played in great spirit, hard and fast and both teams did their respective schools proud.
The win sets up what promises to be a cracking game between Keebra and Rockhampton heavy weights St Brendans next Tuesday (20th August)

KEEBRA DOWN C'BAH
Story By : D Hart - KPRL
Coombabah SHS have adopted “C'BAH” as their pre-game war cry and it sounds suspiciously like “KEEBRA” to me…..well they say imitation is the biggest form of flattery.. but I digress.

Wednesday night saw Keebra Park Open Seconds lift the Gee Shield for the second year in succession beating PBC AT Southport Tigers 18 points to zip.

The game was played in great spirits and was a credit to all involved. Coach Ben Woolf was happy that his boys dug in and maintained composure in what can be emotionally charged encounters.

“The boys stuck to the game plan well tonight and the result is a reflection of the attitude they have displayed consistently both on and off the field.

We know PBC like to play fast but we controlled the tackle well and were able to build pressure off the back of that defensive effort.

In the other games Keebra knocked Coombabah out of the under 15s Walter's Trophy with a clinical display and the Keebra Park Open A'S cemented a spot in the National Schoolboys Cup, South Qld Semi-final against Marsden with a comprehensive 66-0 win over Coombabah Opens.

These results keep Keebra Alive in all grades of the competition and with all games now in the knockout stages we really are at the business end of the season.

Next week the 15's will be up against Brisbane's Marsden SHS as will the Opens, so if the Coombabah boys want to come down and lend their support a fellow Gold Coast school it would be great to see you there.

Game times TBA.
KEEBRA PUT REDS TO BED

Keebra Park have defended their Alan Langer Trophy with a comprehensive victory over Palm Beach Currumbin (34 - 16)in torrential conditions at Pizzey Park.

The win puts Keebra at the top of the group as we head into the knock out stages of the competition.

PBC stuck with Keebra for most of the first half with a game plan that seemed to consist solely of laying in the tackle for as long as possible in order to slow the play down which led to frustration and a few unforced Keebra errors.

This questionable game plan was destined to fail though and once the Keebra boys cleared their own red zone it was one way traffic with PBC unable to combat Keebra out wide.

This inability manifested in ill discipline and PBC soon found themselves down to 12 men after a flurry of punches were thrown at Keebra winger Marion Seve who had sliced through the line and was destined for a four pointer.
The wet conditions hampered a free flowing game but all boys played well and all the atmosphere of the Keebra V PBC clashes was there.

In earlier games the Keebra 13's got up 42-0 over PBC, THE 14'S WON 44-10, Keebra 15's lost 16-12 and the Keebra Open seconds were too strong for PBC.

Well done all the boys involved and see you at the knockout games.

KEEBRA PUT 80 ON COOMBABAH

It sounds more like a cricket score but the 80-0 drubbing handed out by Keebra Park to Coombabah in the Alan Langer Trophy was an indication of what is possible when a team gels.

With Wests Tigers NRL and Holden Cup coaches watching on from the stands, Keebra were ruthless as they ran in try after try against fellow Gold Coasters Coombabah who at best were very poor.

Other results saw Wavell firm as a team to beat after a win over Marsden and Palm Beach downing Cav Road.

In other news the final of the Titans Cup will see Keebra's Open third team up against PBC.

In school sport the 13Bs secured a grand final win and will now face a cross over final against the larger Gold Coast schools.
KEEBRA PARK SEASON SO FAR

Well while it would seem that there has been little football in QLD schools thus far this season there has in fact been plenty. The Bronocs competitions kicked off last week with Keebra under 13's and 14's up against Marsden and while the 13's had a convincing win over their opposition it was an 18 all draw in the 14's.

In the local schools competition the 13 B's are unbeaten and looking very strong while the 14's and 15's have had a mixed bag of wins and losses.

In the Titans Cup their is the stiff competition and as we get into last four rounds, both the 16's and Open C's will need to notch up as many wins as possible to ensure they enter the knock out rounds in good draw position.

This week sees the opening round of the Open A's Langer Trophy, the second tier Gee Shield and the under 15's Walters Cup kick off and for Keebra that means a much anticipated clash with the big improvers Marsden.

In other news, well done to the Keanu Dawson, jj Felise, Lamar Liovave, Jamion Iroa, O'Shae Tuavase, Guy Hamilton, Marion Seve and Kelly Tate who were selected for the South Coast team.

Isaac Liu and Sam Moa continue to take big strides at the Roosters as do Manaia, Andrew, Delouise, Dallas and Kurtis in the Tigers Holden Cup.
PARK TAKE A BITE OUT OF THE SHARK

Keebra Park kicked off their Langer Cup campaign with a convincing 26 - 8 win over Marsden SHS tonight in front of a vocal Brisbane crowd.

The Marsden faithful had come to see their team ,considered to be the team to beat this year, topple Keebra Park the reigning QLD champions but it was not to be.

Both sides came out strong but it was the superior fitness of the Gold Coasters that was the difference with Marsden flagging towards half time.

A 9-2 penalty count kept them in the game and gave them plenty of good field position but they couldnt cross the stripe and the half time score was 16 - 0.

The second half took on a similar pattern and a couple of late consolation tries saw the Makos on the end of a 26 - 8 scoreline.

Well done all the boys involved and heres looking forward to what promises to be a very tight competition in 2013

KEEBRA PARK EXCELS

Gold Coast State High School Keebra Park has long been recognised as a centre of Scientific and Technological excellence and scholarships for its academic programs attract some of the brightest young minds from across the State, however it is probably better known for its exploits on the football field and a sports specialisation program that's is currently considered to be among the best in the nation.

Success has not come overnight for Keebra Park and the program can trace its roots back to foundation principal Garfield Prowse who as far back as the early 1970's could see the value in a curriculum based equally around both sporting and academic pursuits and it is this long standing tradition built on pride in the jersey and work ethic of “no excuses” that have seen the program flourish under Head Coach of 20 years Mr Greg Lenton.

“We have been affiliated with the Wests Tigers since 2003 and they are an enormous help but we did it really tough in the early days, no flash equipment or weight set up, it was on the smell of an oily rag, the classic Rocky type scenario.

Just a couple of members of staff, early starts, push-ups, sit-ups that sort of thing and that's where our tradition is seated, you do the hard work and the results will come” Said Lenton.

And come they did with a succession of appearances in Qld State finals, National final berths in 2005 and 2006, culminating in a win in the Arrive Alive cup in 2009.

These results have continued through to the present and Keebra Park has now cemented itself as the most successful Qld Schoolboy side in recent history.

Add to this wins in the National Rugby Union Sevens competition in 2010 and 2011 and it is safe to say that this simple philosophy has really paid dividends although it is not what drives Lenton anymore..

“The trophies they are not part of it at all.

We always wanted to win the National title but the thrill of that pales in comparison to the thrill I get from seeing some of the kids come from where they have come from and get to where they are now.

Success for many of these kids isn't about playing professional rugby league its more about getting their lives in order, losing weight, becoming healthier both physically and mentally” He said.

“We have graduates who are now Police inspectors, barristers, award winning Journalists and teachers” He added.

One recent graduate who has both got his life in order and gone on to play NRL is current Wests Tigers second row, Ben Murdoch Masila who arrived at Keebra Park as a rather angry, young long haired man from the tough streets of Auklands Otahuhu who could hardly manage a lap of the oval let alone 80 minutes of professional football.

“I could always see the potential in Ben but he just needed guidance. We put him on a training program, watched him like a hawk and through hard work and discipline, he transformed himself into the athlete he is today.

His family hardly recognised him when he returned home to New Zealand and his father cried when he saw him at the airport” Said Lenton.

Murdoch' transformation was more than skin deep though and as his weight dropped, his own self- worth increased.

“I'm the first to say I was a bit of a ratbag when I first got to school and I really don't know where I would have ended up if I hadn't had this guidance” He said. “A lot of my friends had been in trouble with gangs back home and that's probably where I was heading” added Murdoch

Perhaps Keebra's most famous graduate is current New Zealand captain Benji Marshall who first came to Lenton's attention whilst on a school trip from Whakatane High.

“I had given Benji a run in a local game we had at Southport Tigers against a visiting Canberra development side and then subbed him, it was only towards the end of the game that I saw his face looking up at me from the bench that I felt a bit sorry for him and gave him another go.

A scrum packed, Benji scooted from halfback, stepped around a couple of Canberra defenders and scored under the posts. Hang I thought, we might have something here” Said Lenton who recalled picking Marshall up at the airport the following year.

“All he had was a little bag with all his possessions and a couple of photos of his younger brothers and that's where it all started for Benji.”

All the boys at Keebra Park are given the same opportunities and the same access to the program facilitiet and this is another area that makes this program unique amongst its peers.

“Most excellence programs cap their numbers or have criteria in order to gain entry. Our only criteria is that the boys work to the best of their ability and that they conduct themselves in a manner that is respectful to both the program, themselves and the school.

Every boy signs a contract that is based on discipline as without that any program will fall apart. That discipline and the expectations that every boy works his hardest in the classroom has been a key to our success on and off the field

If an alumni boasting Marshall, Murdoch-Masila and Bodene Thompson (Wests Tigers), Greg Eastwood (Bulldogs), Ben Teo and Cory Norman (Broncos), Robert Lui and Blake Leary (Cowboys) and Rangi Chase at English Super League club Castleford, is any diagnostic, then the staff at Keebra Park really have achieved something quite enviable and with a plethora of graduates in the Toyota Cup yet to make their first grade debut, things look certain to continue at this remarkable Gold Coast School.

KENNY SLIPS STRAIGHT INTO EELS
Keebra Park Rugby League
With talent to burn and a new found passion to carve himself a career in the NRL, Keebra Park's own Kenny Edwards set off on the right foot this weeekend with a Man of the Match performance for the Parramatta Eels in their opening trial against the Knights at Armidale.

It has been a steep learning curve for Kenny who was offered the lifeline by Ricky Stuart after circumstances found him playing local grade football for the Southport Tigers on the Gold Coast but an opportunity he has embraced.

"I just need to keep focussed and working hard at training to make the most of this chance. Its early days but i will do all i can to make a future for myself" He Said.

"Winning the Man of the Match Roy Marsters medal is a real honour for me and is a proud moment for myself and my family"

Kenny played in the same Keebra side as Cowboys half, Robert Lui and Tigers new signing Bodene Thompson and is just another example of the real pathways available to the students on the Sports Specialisation program at Keebra Park.
