ARL-D VISITS KIDS IN RED CENTER

Ben Ross, David Peachey and Mario Fenech will join 15 ARL Development Officers in a Macquarie Sports three day blitz of Alice Springs and Yulara commencing today.

Coaching clinics have been arranged for Alice Springs schools and Central Australia Junior League, which will involve over 400 children.

Tomorrow will see the whole school at Yulara participate in the Macquarie Sports Clinic and a visit to the local Mutitjulu Community at Ayers Rock.

Peachey is looking forward to the trip and believes it will be a great experience for the children involved;

“To have Mario Fenech, Ben Ross and the gang from ARL Development will be a buzz for the kids in Central Australia,” Peachey said.

“They don’t get these opportunities often and it’s great that Macquarie Sports and ARL Development have chosen this area for the clinics.”

2009 marks the fifth year of the Macquarie Sports Kids to Kangaroos Super clinics with previous clinics being held this year in Canberra, Bega and Bathurst.

Under 13s
Congratulations to Bentley Park College

Bentley Park College 42 defeated Trinity bay SHS 4
Trinity Bay tried hard, but Bentley have been a step ahead of all other teams this season and showed it with a fantastic team performance from start to finish to go undefeated for the season.

UNDER 15 2ND TIER
Congratulations to Innisfail SHS

Innisfail SHS 40 defeated Redlynch 10

Innisfail shot out to a lead before Redlynch fought back, but then Innisfail clicked back into gear and ran away with game late over an undermanned Redlynch who had done really well to make it through to the grand final.

UNDER 18 2ND TIER
Congratulations to Gordonvale SHS

Gordonvale SHS 24 defeated Innisfail SHS 16

Great game, with the lead changing hands 6 times, Gordonvale trailing 16 -12, scored and converted with about 4 minutes remaining to take the score to 18-16, then scored again with 2 minutes remaining to take an unbeatable lead of 24-16. But a great game and Innisfail shs were also fantastic.

UNDER 18 TOP TIER
Congratulations St Augustines

St Augustines 10 defeated Trinity Bay SHS 6

Another tough game, with defence really coming to the fore. Saints scored early to lead 4 - 0 at halftime, before Trinity Bay struck back just after halftime to lead 6-4. With 4 minutes remaining Saints had a penalty from nearly in front to even scored and missed, and it looked like Trinity Bay were going to go back to back. But Saints made a break from their own half and two tackles later with 50 seconds left on the clock they scored next to the posts to win the game.

Well done to all teams involved and thanks for your help throughout the season. We will be having an end of season function which I would encourage everyone to attend.

The under 15 top tier competition continues with a semi final this Wednesday night at 6.40pm Cairns shs vs Trinity bay shs, the winner to play Bentley park at 4.45pm next Tuesday 19th.

SOUTH COAST TOPS SCHOOL TITLES
Mackay's Daily Mercury

SOUTH Coast made it three wins in a row by defeating Met North 12 - 4 in the final of the Queensland secondary schools rugby league championships at Shark Park yesterday.

In a tight match, South Coast remained undefeated by scoring two tries to one, with Quade Ripping-Dale (South Coast) and Rhett Webster (Met North) named players of the final.

Carnival coordinator Don Saunders said the finalists included many of the top young players in the state.

“I'd say a lot of them are on NRL scholarships at the moment,” Saunders said.

“A lot of their players were named in the two Queensland teams chosen today.”

Capricornia, which finished sixth after a 24 - 12 loss to Peninsula yesterday, had three players named in the Queensland Maroon side and two for the White team.

Capricornia had five players from the Mackay region, and coach Nathan Doyle said they all performed well.

Brydon Sutton (Mackay High), Reid Cruise (Sarina), Alex Hay (Mercy), Jeremy Tetley-Bishop (Glenden) and Daniel Faro (Mackay North) lined up for Capricornia.
THE YEAR OF THE DOG

The Dogs are Kings. Long live the Kings!

The mighty Bulldogs rugby league football club are the new kings of junior rugby league after taking out the national junior rugby league under 16 and 18 titles at St Marys Stadium St Marys yesterday.

The editor has proclaimed them world champions. I think he is right. Who on earth could beat these champion Bulldog teams?

They came, they saw and they conquered at St Marys yesterday. In front of a crowd of 8,972 paying customers the Bulldogs emphatically delivered for their blue and white army of supporters.

And they did it in style.

These boys are coached to promote the football. Dying with the football in hand is foreign to these boys. They play a brand of football that is effective and entertaining.

You can’t tell me that it’s just natural the way they play. It’s obvious these guys are coached to stay on their feet and look to pass the ball to a support player.

Well done to coaches Nathan Towney and Jason Williams. You have done a great job and we salute you.

And well done to the players. You executed the game plan and you all deserve the title of Australian Champion!

The Bulldogs defeated the Parramatta Eels 34 - 22 in a six trys to four battle of the west.

Parramatta went into this game as slight favourites but from the start it was all Bulldogs.

After five minutes of play it got really bad for the Eels. Bulldog Uafu Lavaka streaked down the touchline avoiding the tackles of Kelepi Tanginoa and Sean McGuinness. Near the try line he was tackled by full back Jacob Gagen and ruled to be held up over the line.

Unfortunately for the Eels Gagen suffered a leg injury and was stretchered off. The star representative player did not return.

Some might say that was the reason the Eels lost. Nothing could be further from the truth. Superman couldn’t save this mob from the beating they were to get yesterday.

If anything the loss of lock Frazer Masinamua and half John Asiata from the squad of seventeen during the week was a bigger blow to the team’s chances of winning. Both had been instrumental to getting Parramatta to the grand final.

It didn’t take the Dogs much longer to make up for being held up over the line. Dogs second rower David Minute did a great impersonation of a runaway Mack truck close to the Eels line to open the scoring with a barnstorming try. Dogs 6 - 0.

Four minutes later Dogs five eighth Samisoni Langi put up a kick which Eels winger Tanginoa misjudged and the ball fell into the hands of Dogs centre Villiami Moekiola who scored a try. Dogs 12 - 0.

In the 17th minute Eels halfback and captain Sean McGuinness dummied to the defence ten metres out to put the Eels on the scoreboard. Dogs 12 - 6.

Mack truck Minute was at it again in the 21st minute when he proved unstoppable again eight metres out. Dogs 18 - 6.

Parramatta hit back just on half time when the ball went through a number of hands for second rower Joseph Ualesi to score. Troy Errington failed to convert. Why wasn’t Sean McGuinness kicking?

Half time score Dogs 18 - 10.

The second half started with two pieces of magic play from the Dogs skipper Samisoni Langi that was to kill Parramatta.

In the 33rd minute Langi put his centre Matthew Fukofuka over for a try after a great cut out pass put him into a gap.

Shortly after in the 38th minute he used his lethal cut out pass again to put winger Jermaine Nader over for a try. By now the Dogs lead 28 - 10 and the eels weren’t playing well enough to get back in the contest.

In the 45th minute Bulldogs Joshua Rainbow put the question beyond doubt when he went over for a try to take the score to 34 - 10.

The Eels scored a consolation try with forty five seconds left on the clock when big prop Sione Hehepoto crashed through. Final score Bulldogs 34 Parramatta 22.

The Parramatta Eels tried to get back in the match and they never stopped trying but in the end there was no “Plan B”.

Plan A is for Parramatta to use their size and strength to maximum use and gradually grind teams into the ground. The Dogs tacked them out of the match and in the end there seemed to be no “Plan B”.

I would have liked to see the Eels give their outside men more of a go rather than playing “X” moves back into the teeth of the Bulldogs defence time after time.

Well done to the Eels for getting to the grand final. It was cruel to lose two players out of the team during the week and then to lose Gagen in the fifth minute of play. But that’s footy.

Eels coach Chris Bradbury and his staff have done a wonderful job in turning this team around during the year.

But what can you say about the Dogs. They were great. Not only that but they were entertaining. And for that we thank you.

Bulldogs (D Minute 2, J Rainbow, J Nader, M Fukofuka, V Moekiola tries, P Irwin 5 goals) def Parramatta (V Toutai,S McGuinness, J Ualesi, S Hehepoto tries, J Neale 3 goals)

PK’s Best & Fairest:

2 – David Minute Bulldogs Second rower
1 – David Klemmer Bulldogs prop

MIXED SUCCESS FOR SEASON LAUNCH
The Glen Innis Examiner
The under 8’s minor league team kicked off their season on saturday with a home game against Armidale. Glen kept Armidale on their toes with Jason McAlister testing the Armidale defence through the middle and Mark Law out pacing them up the sideline.

Dylan Easterbrook made some good yards up the field, growing in confidence as the game progressed.Ewan Winter put Glen’s only points on the board for the day through damaging runs which resulted in two individual trys.

Even though the final result was in Armidales favour, 40-8, the boys worked hard with everyone getting involved and having fun.

This year’s under 10’s side started their season off in fine form, defeating Armidale 40 to 4. The try scorers were Zac Willis, Matty Jillett, Nathaniel Conners, Baily O’Brien , Jonathon Martin, James Cameron and Thomas Mitchell (2).

Best and fairest for Glen Innes were Thomas Mitchell, Zac Willis and Matthew Jillett. Coaches pick went to Luke Hodgson

The under 12’s started their season with a win12 - 4. The team played extremely well together. Jake Willis lead by example and organised the team from half back. Simon Thomas showed determination in his attack and Jacob Howard in defence.

Brock Simpkins was a standout on the day and gained both the club and referees three points. Brayden Gallagher was a force to be reckoned with in both his attack and defence receiving the two points and Robbie Hamel receiving one point. Ben Schiffman received the Bob Sloman award with good hard running throughout the match.

The under 14’s kicked off their year with a solid 40 to10 win over Armidale on Saturday. The home ground advantage was evident as the boys tore into Armidale from the outset of play.

Solid running from all forwards saw plenty of room made for the boys out wide. The backs moved the ball well with centre Wade Campbell having a very strong game and being well supported by the rest of the backline.

Tom Ruming and Jesse Mossman worked well together in the halves and a good combination of play between forwards and backs continued all game. Players of the day were Wade Campbell, Jamie Hogan and Matt Newsome. Nathan Marzulli won the Bob Sloman award.

The 16s played well in their first game of the season, there was a massive amount of handling errors and some miss communication but all in all it was a great game.

The boys played smart in defence holding Armidale off their line for five sets of six, though mistakes put them there.

Bryce Anderson and Jake Hartman tore up in attack with great runs, Harley Wright put up a huge defence, Jamie Williamson made a great try saving tackle while Sam Schiffman, Brady Willis,Alex Mossman, Brendon Jillett and Dillon Watson had huge games. The backs played really well with our new import Craig Browne having a blinder.

The score was 16 points to 18 with a kick to come on the bell, an unlucky Armidale lad did not convert and we were lucky to come away with a win.

This weekend sees Glen Innes travel to Inverell to play Inverell North at Kamillaroi Oval in the second round of the competition.

Times are as follows

10s 10:45am

12s 11:30am

BABY HOPPA EMERGING AS NEW STEWART
Sydney's Daily Telegraph
TEENAGER William Hopoate is nothing like his old man. And that's exactly the way his father, former Manly bad boy John Hopoate, likes it.

"Des (Hasler) pulled me aside the other day,'' John Hopoate said. "He told me he's really happy with the way William's going and that 'he moved 100 times better than when you were playing'.

"He's probably more disciplined than me, too, which is a good thing.''

Softly spoken and reserved, William, 17, is considered by many to be the answer to Manly's fullback crisis.

Having not won a game this year without injured strike weapon Brett Stewart, support for Hopoate's elevation is gaining momentum.

Already tagged "a special talent'' and "ready for the next step'' by Matthew and Andrew Johns, Hopoate has scored three tries in five Toyota Cup appearances.

"He's still young, but if Des thinks he's right to go then I'll back him,'' Hopoate said. "I won't be holding him back or anything like that, but I'm not going to push for him either.

"I don't want too much pressure on him, because people will start talking about him and expect too much. "But I do think he would be up to it.''

Hopoate said the elevation of his son to first grade would make him "prouder than when I made my debut'', and he pointed to his son's carefree attitude as a sign he was ready.

"He's so laid-back, nothing seems to faze him,'' Hopoate said. "He was captain for the Harold Matthews team last year and I didn't even know until he ran out of the tunnel first. That's the type of things he does. Unless someone tells us or we go out of our way to ask him, he doesn't say much.''

Hopoate also has the support of Manly co-owner Max Delmege. "I was a fan of his father's, there's no secret of that,'' Delmege said.

"It's nice to keep that Hopoate name in Manly and regardless of his father's antics he was a darn good player. And I think the son will be exactly the same.''
ST. GREG'S STILL ALIVE

St Gregory's College Campbelltown have narrowly beaten Sarah Redfern High 20 - 10, in a great game of schoolboy rugby league at Campbelltown Stadium.

The match began a hard arm wrestle for both teams, until St Greg's scored with a cross field kick in the 17th minute.

St Greg's continued the scoring with some great forward running by Jason Green & Gene Murphy.

Leading 16 - 0 half time.

A fired up Sarah Redfern came out with all guns blazing, with bone rattling defence by forwards Keelan Akavi and Francis Lemaile.

Sarah no.3 Ronny Palumbo contained West Tigers u/20s player Limoni Kamuta terrifically, giving him little opportunity with good 1 on 1 defence.

Sarah posted 2 quick tries and had seemed to find their strides until the sin-bining of a player left them with 12 for the remainder of the second half, and Greg's took full advantage scoring with minutes remaining to secure victory 20 - 10 and progressing in the Arrive Alive Cup.

ROOKIE’S RAPID RISE
Bega District News
DALE Finucane takes another significant step in his rugby league career this weekend.

After signing with Canterbury Bulldogs last year he will represent the club in the SG Ball (U/18s) grand final on Sunday against Melbourne.

However, he won’t be the only interest for rugby league lovers in the Bega Valley.

Eden’s John Aldridge has been a standout for the Melbourne Storm in 2009 after moving to the club during the summer and will be in the opposing side.

Dale, the former Bega Rooster, has impressed in his first year with the Bulldogs and has been successful since shifting from five-eighth to lock.

Canterbury finished the regular season in second position and reached the grand final after smashing Northern Districts 62-10 last weekend.

Dale said that he was looking forward to the match.

“It’s awesome to be able to play in the final because it’s one of the biggest rugby league competitions in Australia,” he said.

“I’ve settled into the team really well and I hope to cap off our season in style.”

It has been an outstanding season for Dale who has signed with the club until the end of 2012.

The 17-year-old has started in every match and has also been adjudged Lock of the Week on four occasions.

Dale said he has enjoyed the position switch.

“It’s been good because I’ve been a lot more involved than when I was five-eighth,” he said.

“The SG Ball competition is a really good, fast standard of footy.”

According to Dale it has been a relatively smooth transition from Bega into the city.

“It’s been good to have a bit of a change of scenery by moving to Sydney,” he said.

“I haven’t really been homesick because I’m enjoying it up here but I do miss everyone back home.

“My family have been great in providing support and they’re moving up soon to help out even more.

“The boys at the Roosters are really supportive and I chat to them as much as I can.”

Dale’s lifestyle involves balancing football, including four training sessions a week and undertaking year 12 studies.

According to Dale it was difficult to juggle both at times.

“I’ve had to alter my school program and subjects a bit because of footy but it’s going alright,” he said.

“It can be tough sometimes but I’m enjoying it.”

Sharon Finucane, Dale’s mum, said that she was very proud of her son.

“He has basically got to where he has all by himself,” she said.

“Dale’s doing really well for the Bulldogs and has also managed to get great grades at school.

“I actually told him he could quit school if it became too hard but he wouldn’t allow that.”

According to Ms Finucane the family is moving up to Sydney in the near future.

“We just want to make sure he doesn’t get homesick and provide him with support,” she said.

“Dale comes back to Bega often to visit but this will make it a bit easier.

“I know his brother (Dean) misses him a lot and Dale is the rock of our family.”

Ms Finucane said that her son still had a close relationship with the Roosters.

“The Bega boys have been awesome for Dale in providing support and I think that has helped keep him grounded,” she said.

“He texts us every weekend to see how the Roosters have been doing which is great.”

John Aldridge grabbed attention with a best-on-ground in the Group 16 reserves grand final last year.

John backed up his performance by lining up in the first grade final against the Roosters, who had Dale at five-eighth.

Eden proved too strong that day, winning 32-8 and Dale said he hoped to gain some revenge on Sunday.

“Yeah I definitely want to get one over him this time,” he said.

“I don’t have a lot to do with John outside of footy but we get along well.”

Roosters coach Mitch Creary said both teenagers were outstanding prospects.

“Dale and John were the standout young players in Group 16 last year,” he said.

Creary said that Dale had a big future in the sport.

“He is a great footballer but an even better person,” he said.

“Dale deserves everything he gets and I wish him the best on Sunday.”

The big game tonight is the Country Under 18s Championship final between the Oxley Pioneers and the Central Hunter Power.

Nine of Group 4’s finest young stars will help defend Oxley’s Under 18s title at Orange’s Wade Park tonight while a number of Group 21 players line up for the Power.

The Pioneers trained at Coonabarabran yesterday before heading further south to Orange.

“We worked hard on defence today,” coach Peter Barrett said.

“Our attack is good but we’ve been a bit soft in defence.

“They’ve got a very good half and a very good hooker so they’re the dangers.

“If we can get our defence right and cut out our mistakes our attack should follow.

“We’ve got two very good attacking second-rowers in Adam Hull and Kristian Kelly and they’re complemented by Jerome Hammond, Reece Jaeger and Matty Nean at fullback.”

Nean will captain the side again.

He is one of the more experienced players, having played in last year’s successful team.

That victory and the side’s performances so far have landed it the favourites tag but Barrett said Central Hunter may have the edge in the experience stakes.

“We’re the younger team of the two,” he said.

“They’ve got a lot of players who gained some experience last year while about half our side are only turning 17 this year.

“We beat them in the semis last year but they’ll be looking to go better this time.”

The Oxley team is unchanged from the one that won through to the semis and then beat the Western Rams to make the final.

“I’ve seen no reason to change it,” Barrett said.

“We’ve had a couple of players become available but we’ve stuck with these guys.”

It’s a massive occasion for the young players.

Those that don’t already have an NRL contract will be playing on the big stage.

The City-Country game, featuring Group 4 products Alan Tongue and Jamie Lyon, follows the Under 18 match.

Country Under 18 selectors will also be there and Oxley is certain to get a few players named in the side after the game.

The game kicks off at 5.30pm.

GUNN TO FIRE IN ANZAC BATTLE
Forbes Adcovate

Talented young Forbes footballer Joe Gunn will fulfil what for many junior rugby league players is just a dream when he takes to Suncorp Stadium in a curtain raiser to tomorrow night’s Anzac test.

The test will be played between Australia and New Zealand but Gunn will represent the NSW Indigenous under 16s in their clash with the Queensland Indigenous under 16s.

Some of the most talented junior footballers in the country will take to the paddock and NSW will have their work cut out for them with the match to be staged at the infamous stadium formerly known as Lang Park.

Queensland scored a dying minutes victory in last year’s clash and NSW will be out to square the ledger.

The young centre was selected for the honour following a two day selection camp held in Sydney in October.

Three Red Bend Catholic College students made the trip for the camp however of the three, Gunn was the sole local selection.

He follows in the footsteps of former Red Bend Catholic College student Zac Merritt, who now plays with the Canberra Raiders Toyota Cup side and who made the NSW Indigenous side in 2005, and former college student Les Pitt who was selected in 2007.

He will fill the role of a utility back coming off the bench and said he was excited to be a part of the side.

“It’s really good to able to represent the culture,” he said.

Gunn said this was particularly the case in such elite company.

“They were pretty skilled and fit and some already play in the junior grades for NRL clubs.”

The 16-year-old Gunn already has numerous representative honours under his belt but his selection in the NSW Indigenous squad is one of the biggest to date.

He says he’d like to take the game further.

“My goal is to sign with an NRL club and hopefully crack first grade one day,” he said.

Gunn went into camp for the clash on Tuesday.

GREAT START BY COOMBABAH

Coombabah State High School started 2009 with very positive by all teams.

This year the school has received great support through the Canberra Raiders, and, in particular, Mr. Paul Bramley, head coach of the 2008 Queensland Cup Premiers, Souths Logan.

Mr. Bramley is assisting the Affiliation by working with all rugby league program participants weekly, and the results have been immediate. ‘The Raiders are certainly keeping a very close eye on a number of students’, Mr. Bramley stated.

The Coombabah High Titans Cup side were outstanding defensively on Monday night against Beaudesert, but with a completion rate of 30% it is very hard to win.

Leading 10-6 with one minute remaining, the toll of a heavy defensive load allowed Beaudesert to score off a grubber, kick and convert to defeat Coombabah 12-10. It certainly was a game the boys have learnt from after a dvd review highlighting their strengths and weaknesses.

Stand out performances on the night were Kris Palmer and Ryan Epa.

U/13’S:

Tuesday night the U/13 team took on Mountain Creek.

The boys performed well, accounting for Mountain Creek 24-8.

While they still have a lot of improvement to go, they are starting to gel as a team and are developing their skills further.

Some of the boys who played well included Josh Willets and Jordan Scott who led the team around well, Jayden Thompson, who scored a very good try of a kick charge down, and Shayde Werahiko, who always took the ball forward.

Well done boys, let’s keep moving forward.

U/14’S:

Tuesday at Runaway Bay was an important day for Coombabah Rugby League.

The U/14 took on the highly fancied Mountain Creek outfit. From the opening whistle it was obvious the Coombabah boys had their minds on the job.

The forwards made good yardage and the backs were able to capitalise with points. The boys played well, playing some constructive, mature football! Herald Pajonoc, Nathan Wilson, Lance Tonga,

Dylan Cooke and Corey Withers all had fine games.

The boys are looking forward to the rest of the season. 36-0.

U/15’S:

On Wednesday night the U/15’s went up to Mountain Creek for the first round of the competition.

They performed well to put themselves in a position to win the game. With minutes to go they had a try disallowed, which would have put them in front. Brendan Elliot was the best performed during the game.

On Wednesday night the Open side, participating in the Andrew Gee Level Two competition came up against their coastal neighbours,. PBC.

From the kick-off Coombabah competed well against the much bigger PBC side, but it wasn’t until midway through the first half on the back of four non-complete sets that PBC scored and converted to go into sheds at half time leading Coombabah 12-6.

The second half witnessed a real arm wrestle with Coombabah hitting the lead with 12 minutes remaining at 22-16, but a try with 5 minutes remaining locked it all up at 22-22.

With a last throw of the dice, Coombabah scored a great try to Jeremiah Niah which was converted by Mitcham Ardler to give Coombabah a well ground out win, 28-22

A solid performance by all boys, with special mention to Captain Glen Marks, Jordan Andrewes and Ben Thompson for their consistent effort for the whole game.

Congratulations to Brendan Elliot on his selection in the South Coast U/15 side, we wish him the best of luck at the State Carnival.

Congratulations to Jordan Andrewes on his selection in the South-West Opens side to contest the State Carnival. Unfortunately, due a broken hand, Jordan could not trial for South Coast, but through recent solid performances gained selection for South-West.

Best of luck at the State Carnival, Jordan.
MATER DEI IS OUT FOR REDEMPTION
Wagga Wagga's Daily Advertiser
MATER Dei Catholic College’s bid for Carroll Cup redemption will begin tonight at Robertson Oval when it takes on a relatively “unknown” Kooringal High School team.

Mater Dei was by far the most impressive of the teams during last year’s preliminary rounds before falling to fierce rival Kildare Catholic College in the decider.

Mater Dei coach Mark Gleeson said last year’s grand final loss affected the entire playing group, making the team even more determined for success in 2009.

With half of last year’s team taking to the field tonight, Mater Dei is looking to make a statement in tonight’s opening-round clash.

“In last year’s final we had a few players who probably just didn’t turn up on the night,” Gleeson said yesterday.

“We want to make sure that doesn’t happen again so we’ll be very conscious that if a player doesn’t seem to want to be part of it or isn’t mentally ready, we’ll look for someone else who is.

“The loss hurt our whole group last year and the boys are really keen on turning things around.”

Mater Dei will enter tonight’s clash vastly undermanned, with up to seven names missing from its strongest line-up.

In a big blow to Mater Dei’s title hopes, impressive Wagga Tigers youngster Lahn Shepherd gained a job in the school holidays and therefore won’t be a part of the school team.

Others missing through injury include Dallan Stanton, Rory Litchfield, Joe Redfern, Callum Gardner, Cam Bailey and Harry Collins.

Despite the injuries, Gleeson believes his team will put on a strong showing tonight against an unknown Kooringal High team.

“We’ve got a fair few injuries and losing Lahn Shepherd in the holidays was a bit disappointing,” Gleeson said.

“But we’ve still got a pretty good side and we’ve been working pretty hard on things at training and putting our structures in place.

“We’re expecting a physical hard-fought match first up or that’s what we’re hoping for, to see whether we’re up for the task.

“We don’t know too much about them to be honest.”

Gleeson believes it will be a tough competition this year with Kildare Catholic College and The Riverina Anglican College the two teams to beat.

SG BALL STORM INTO HISTORY BOOKS
A preview from coach Kim Williams

The Melbourne Storm have overcome many hurdles in their inaugural year in the SG Ball competition, but only one more challenge stands in their way as the team strives to win the Premiership.

The Storm played their way into the Grand Final with a convincing 28 - 14 victory over the Manly Sea Eagles in their semi-final on Saturday and now face their final hurdle in the form of the Canterbury Bulldogs in the decider this weekend.

The Bulldogs will pose a serious threat to the Storm after thrashing Brisbane Norths in their semi-final on Saturday, but the Storm players have become accustomed to adversity throughout their initial season.

From the start of the program way back in November the team has coped with constant battles for training venues, searing heat throughout the Melbourne summer and the toughest of training regimes implemented by their strength and conditioning coaches Adrian Jiminez and Mitchell Cook.

Combined with this the players have had to endure nine away games out of their 12 matches with games mainly played in Sydney and one on the Gold Coast.

For some players, these away games have involved a 19-hour day, starting with a train ride at 5.00am in the morning, followed by a flight to Sydney, a game in the toughest Under 18’s competition in the world, a flight back to Melbourne, and finishing with another train ride to arrive at home around midnight.

Throughout all of this, the group has maintained a level of professionalism and maturity that is well beyond their years.

Their results have confirmed what the coaching staff has known for a long time – that this is a pretty special group of young men who have grown within the Melbourne Storm family and thrive on the winning culture of the club.

On Saturday the Storm will head to Sydney with their sights firmly set on winning the Premiership in their inaugural year. The team will once again enter the game with great confidence knowing that they have been able to overcome every hurdle placed in front of them so far this year.

The Storm have all of the key ingredients of successful teams with a fearsome forward pack and strike players throughout the entire backline.

Their form over the past six weeks has been incredible and they have peaked at the right time of the year with convincing wins in every game of the finals series to date.

The players are ready to continue the proud tradition of the mighty Melbourne Storm and bring another Premiership home to Victoria.

Best of luck boys – we know that you will make us proud again this Saturday!!!

2009 SG Ball Grand Final BAnnerNATIONAL JNR REPS – GRAND FINAL PREVIEW
ourfootyteam logo
Well here we are folks. We’re down to the last two. The absolute best.

PK’s crystal ball was spot on last week when I picked the four winners and I believe I’m on a roll. I got the crystal ball out again this week and I have made two judicious decisions.

Congratulations to the Bulldogs for having both teams in the grand final. A great achievement for this famous Sydney club.

Congratulations to the Parramatta Eels who attempt to make it two in a row in the Harold Matthews Cup following last year’s victory.

Congratulations to the Melbourne Storm who have made history by qualifying for the grand final in their first year of competition at this level.

All teams are fighting for something extra this year. As exclusively revealed in ourfootyteam.com two weeks ago the winners will not only be crowned SG Ball Cup and Harold Matthews Cup champions but they will gain the title of national champion.

This year’s national junior competition included the best from Queensland, NSW and Northern Territory fighting it out to be in the round of 16.

Now we are down to the crème de la crème. BRING IT ON!

SG BALL CUP – Bulldogs v Melbourne Storm

The big questions? Have the Bulldogs peaked too early? Can Melbourne’s defence match the flair of the mighty Bulldogs?

The Bulldogs absolutely smashed Queensland’s finest last week defeating the Brisbane based Norths Devils 62 - 10. They were devastating in attack and ruthless in defence.

Conversely the Storm played against Manly, a side many felt were lucky to make the play offs and beat them 28-14. I’m sure the Storm would be the first to admit they didn’t play well.

Ball security went out the window as the football was dropped too often presenting Manly with many more opportunities than they deserved.

If Melbourne plays like they did against Manly the Bulldogs will fair dinkum flog them. What the Storm have to do is hold on to the ball. Stop the low percentage passes and respect possession.

They need a mighty game from their gun centre Townsville’s Justin O’Neill. He was missing in action last week and the Storm need this boy to have a big game to have any chance of being crowned the best in Australia.

On the other hand everything went right for the Bulldogs last week. They were superb. Not only that but they enthralled the crowd with their style of football. It was entertaining!

But have they peaked too early? Can they produce another performance like that? Melbourne will be a different kettle of fish to Norths Devils. They are tough up front with players like Sepati Afu and Jordan McLean.

On the fringes they also have big and mobile forwards like Sam Martin, Kenny Bromwich and Theo Stuart.

Out in the backs the Storm has pace and size. Centres O’Neill and Slade Griffin are as big as some of the forwards – only faster!

The Storm brought half back Matt “hot” Currie into the team last week replacing the reliable Mark Porges. Currie was a revelation with his prodigious passing and running game.

I think Currie will be even better this week after another week’s training with his team will only bring better cohesion.

The Bulldogs will find it much tougher this week against quality opposition. The Storm are bigger and faster than what they faced last week.

The Dogs have only lost one game this year in round one of the competition against Newtown Jets by 20-16. The Storm lost three games in the season proper.

The points for and against for all normal rounds of the competition as well as the finals series makes interesting reading.

The Bulldogs have amassed a points for/against over twelve games of 576/266 whereas Melbourne’s figures are 316/252.

The Dogs averaged 22 more points per game than the Storm while the defence stats are around the same. In the end I think that is where the difference will be on Saturday with the Bulldogs ability to score more points than the opposition.

THE BIG MATCH–UPS:

Props Sepati Afu and Jordan McLean v Teni Waipouri and Judah Lavulo

Backrowers Sam Martin and Theo Stuart v Chris Thomas and Ben Aualiitia

Halves Matt “hot” Currie v Liam Ayoub and Aidan Sezer

Centres Justin O’Neill and Slade Griffin v Ali Hijazi

PK’S TIP:

The Bulldogs will find it harder going this week and I don’t think they can play as well as they did last week. But their superior attack and flair will have them win by 12 points.

Bulldogs v Parramatta EelsThe big question? Can the Parramatta Eels win back-to-back premierships?

I questioned earlier in the season whether the Parramatta team had the same ability as last year’s Harold Matthews team that smashed Penrith in the grand final.

At the time I felt they didn’t possess the same ruthless defence as their predecessors. Since then they have improved their defence to be the best in the competition.

Not only that but over 12 games they also have the best attack by scoring the most points. Points for and against for the Eels over 12 games is 450/132. The Bulldogs compare favourably with 428/146. Nothing between them.

The two undefeated teams have strike power all over the paddock and have belted some clubs this year.

I think Parramatta have been marginally more impressive in the finals series. I say this because they have beaten Brisbane-based Norths Devils and Western Suburbs 38-24 and 40-16 respectively the last two weeks without their two big guns.

Halfback Sean McGuinness resumes for the grand final after serving a suspension for a spear tackle. He and number six Troy Errington are the brains behind the Eels backline.

Superstar NSW fullback Jacob Gagen, one of the best players in the competion, will also play in the grand final after being out with a hamstring injury. My sources reveal he is fully recovered and ready to go!

In looking at the two undefeated teams I would say that is the difference between the two teams; the fact that Parramatta will be strengthened by the inclusion of the dynamic duo and that should give them the edge over the Bulldogs.

THE BIG MATCH–UPS:

Fullback Jacob Gagen v Peter Irwin

Five eighth Troy Errington v Samisoni Langi

Props Josh Neale and Junior Paulo v Davis Klemmer

Second row Jordan Malaki v David Minute

Halfback Sean McGuinness v Jaline Graham

PK’S TIP:

With Batman and Robin back for Parramatta they will save the day so I’m tipping the Eels to win by 6 points.
COWBOYS REACHING REMOTE SCHOOLS THROUGH VIRTUAL CLASSROOM

With the largest footprint in the National Rugby League, the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys are reaching out to remote schools in 2009 through an innovative online education program.

The Cowboys in the Classroom initiative is being delivered to schools in conjunction with the Queensland Department of Education & Training’s Smart Classrooms Learning Place, with over 1,500 students in Years 5-7 in schools across Mackay/Whitsunday, North Queensland and Far North Queensland participating in 2009.

The program runs throughout the NRL season (March-September) and involves regular online interaction with Cowboys players and a virtual classroom in which students complete tasks in five modules that each focus on a different element of teamwork.

The virtual classroom is a secure website that features rich multimedia content about Cowboys players, incorporating videos, audio and images of the players and their training environment.

This week Cowboys players Ben Farrar, Grant Rovelli and Ben Harris will each be involved in a 30-minute online classroom chat with students on the question of ‘What makes a good team?’.

Participating schools cover a wide geographic area, ranging from the Mount Isa School of the Air in the west, north to Cairns West State School, and down to Moranbah Primary School in the south.

Cowboys in the Classroom complements the Cowboys’ Townsville-based Adopt-a-School program, which enables face-to-face access with players at their ‘adopted’ schools and in 2009 is focusing on the theme, ‘Eat well, Play well, Stay well’.

Cowboys Community Relations Manager Fiona Pelling is delighted that the club has been able to extend its classrooms program through a secure platform provided by the Learning Place.

“We’ve previously been limited in reaching the remote schools in our footprint by the distance and logistical problems in having players visit in person,” Ms Pelling says.

“The web-based program opens the door for interaction between the players and students and we’re having great fun with the interactivity, as well as learning a lot.”

Kim Johnson and Nicola House, Smart Classrooms Mentors – FNQ, are encouraged by the take-up of the pilot program in its first year.

“We’ve had a great response from schools, both in sign-ups and as the students progress through the project modules,” Ms Johnson says.

“The schools are reporting good results from the interaction with the players and from the reinforcement of the key messages – the value of teamwork, and living a healthy life through sport.”

The Bulldogs have qualified for next week’s grand final after defeating the Newcastle Knights 30 - 24 in the Harold Matthews Cup semi final at St Marys Stadium St Marys last Saturday.

The game was played in fine conditions.

I revved the Knights boys up with some tongue-in-cheek banter in our preview last week about their ability to compete in end of season games. Boy did they prove me wrong!

Don’t readers feel sorry for poor old PK with so much egg covering my face?

They went close to winning the match in the 59th minute of the game.

They were behind 26 - 24 and were mounting a last-ditch attack on the Bulldogs try line.

Knights centre Pat Mata’utia-Leifi threw himself with everything he had at the try line in a last minute desperate bid to win the game.

The referee wasn’t sure if he grounded the ball. He then consulted with his in goal judge who told him Mata’utia-Leifi had been held up.

Wow....how close was that? According to our trusted editor, who just happened to be taking photos behind the posts at that stage of the game, thought Mata’utia-Leifi had touched down.

It must have been very close. But that’s footy!

PK’S Best & Fairest:

3 – Samisoni Langi Bulldogs five eighth
2 – David Klemmer Bulldogs prop
1 - Geordie Connelly Knights five eighth

The scoring started in the 4th minute when Bulldogs centre Matthew Fukofuka stepped inside some flimsy Knights defence fifteen metres from the tryline and scored. Bulldogs 6 - 0.

Newcastle responded three minutes later with a beaut try. Five eighth Geordie Connelly burst through the defence fifty metres out.

His halfback mate Shay Padberg was in support to take a well timed pass and score. Scores locked 6-6.

In the 11th minute halfback Jaline Graham put his second rower David Minute through a hole.

Minute then passed back to Graham who was in support to score a nice try. Bulldogs 12 - 6.

Newcastle hit back soon after in the 14th minute after Dogs winger Jermaine Nader dropped the ball from the kick off and a scrum was set on the Dogs ten metre line.

Graham was in the action again as he put his centre Matthew Fukofuka into a hole with a well timed pass to score a try. Scores locked 12 - 12.

The match score continued to see-saw when in the 18th minute Dogs classy five eighth Samisoni Langi drifted across field and linked up with Joshua Rainbow. And you know what they say about Rainbows, don’t you?

That’s right there is a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow! Langi slipped Rainbow a beaut ball twenty five metres out from the Knights line to score a great try. Bulldogs 18-12.

To keep trend with the match Newcastle half Shay Padberg was next to score after dummying his way through some confused Dogs defence close to the line.

That made the half time score 18-18 and reflected the closeness of the game.

The Bulldogs were the first to score in the second half through a great team try where the ball was passed to the left side then back to the right. Uafu Lavaka finished the movement off to take the score to 22-18 in the Dogs favour.

The Dogs continued to exert pressure with a clever decoy move close to the Knights line.

Jaline Graham passed to fullback Peter Irwin joining the line who then passed to centre Villiami Moekiola who scored a neat try. Bulldogs 26-18.

The Knight boys were heard rallying themselves behind the goal posts after that try. “Come on boyz let’s show PK we aren’t chokers”, one was heard to say.

They responded in the 54th minute after fullback Josh Morrison threw a long cut-out pass to Pierson Smyczynski to score in the corner.

Goal kicking centre Nicholas Ritter converted from the sideline and now the Knights were only trailing by two points. Bulldogs 26-24.

Next came that critical moment in the 59th minute when centre Pat Mata’utia-Leifi was ruled held up over the line.

Shortly after in the last minute of play Newcastle lost the ball in a last throw of the dice play.

Samisoni Langi scooped the ball up and raced thirty five metres to the line to score a try.

Fulltime Bulldogs 30 defeated the Knights 24. Well done to both teams on a great game of semi final footy!

The Knights had many stars.

Centres Nicholas Ritter and Pat Mata’utia-Leifi were great. The halves Padberg and Connelly had a great battle with their opposites. Forwards Jason Savin and Jeremy Ma’a were always in the thick of the action.

The Dogs were best served by Irwin, Langi, Graham, Minute and big prop David Klemmer.

So can the undefeated Bulldogs beat the undefeated Parramatta Eels next week in the grand final?

MELBOURNE STORM WRECK MANLY FAIRYTAIL
ourfootyteam logo
The Melbourne Storm have created history by qualifying for next week’s grand final after defeating the Manly Sea Eagles 28 - 14 in the SG Ball semi final at St Marys Stadium St Marys on Saturday.

The game was played in fine conditions.

This is the Storm’s first tilt at the SG Ball competition and they have exceeded all expectations of their officials and supporters - but not the players.

These boys believe in themselves and I have seen at crucial times during some of their games this year they dig deep for each other.

There is a real healthy respect of each others ability and this produces confidence and self belief that they can play anyone and win.

The team is made up of mainly local Victorian kids with a mix of quality representative players from NSW, Queensland and New Zealand. Seven of the players come from their Under 20 Toyota Cup Squad.

Saturday’s result was a win but they know they didn’t play well. Too many times they dropped the ball and gave Manly opportunities they weren’t expecting.

They will have to improve their ball security if they are to match the Bulldogs, their opponents in next week’s grand final.

They will also need a better game from star centre Justin O’Neill who was unusually quite in this game. Melbourne will need a bigger involvement from this fine player if they are to have any hope of beating the Dogs.

Manly were first to the scoreboard after a Manly scrum win on the Storm ten metre line. A planned move saw strong centre Josh Portlock go over and score the first of his three tries for the day. Manly 6-0.

The Storm hit back in the 17th minute when Qld Indigenous representative half back Matt Currie gave a great ball to rampaging front rower Jordan Mclean close to the line for a try. Score locked 6 - 6.

Next up was rock hard centre Slade Griffin who was a happy recipient of another great ball from Currie in the 21st minute. Griffin proved unstoppable close to the line.

Enter former New Zealand under 16 representative Theo Stuart. In the 29th minute he resembled a runaway truck as he bowled over two Manly defenders on his way to the line. Storm lead 18 - 6.

Manly hit back just before half time when Manly skipper and fullback Sione Ala gave a nice ball to Portlock who again stepped inside the defence to score his second of the day.

The half time score was Melbourne 18 leading Manly 10.

Six minutes after the break big Storm forward Theo Stuart was again in the action. A scrum was set ten metres out from the Sea Eagles line. Stuart put his head in at lock so you knew something was brewing.

He picked the ball up from the back of the scrum and did his impersonation of a runaway truck again.

His trail of destruction left three Manly defenders in his wake on the way to the try line. Storm 24 - 10.

That man Matt “hot” Currie, the son of former international Tony Currie, was back in the action in the 50th minute when his dummy bamboozled the Sea Eagles defence five metres out and he scored a good try. Storm 28 - 10

Manly were not finished though. They never tossed it in and were very competitive throughout the game. In the 65th minute of play second rower Nathan Clarke and Ala combined to put Portlock in for his third try of the day.

Fulltime score Melbourne 28 Manly 14.

Best for Manly were Portlock, half Gary Riccardi, hooker Malcolm Parry and second rower Matt Scott.

Many people thought Manly were lucky to make the finals series.

But once they were in they didn’t disappoint. They beat premiership favourites St George in the round of 16 match and defeated Queensland's second best team Townsville Stingers in the quarter final match last week.

They gave their best on Saturday and I know they will be disappointed with the loss. But the Manly junior representative program is alive and well.

The Manly Matthews Cup had their most successful season in history and they were in third position after the end of round nine and made the round of 16. The efforts of the SG Ball team in competing in a semi final confirm peoples’ view that the Sea Eagles are back.

I am really looking forward to the grand final clash between the Storm and Bulldogs.

The clash between the two sets of forwards will be sensational.

Add to that the match ups in the backs between the Bulldogs Nathan Massey, Aidan Sezer and Ali Hijazi up against the storm centres O’Neill and Griifin and half Matt ‘hot’ Currie.

Don’t miss it folks!

BIG TIME ... Andrew Pryor, Eli Thaiday and Daniel Bartlett will play for the Queensland Murri team in the opener to Friday's Test
THAIDAY FOLLOWS IN BIG BROTHER SAM'S FOOTSTEPS
Story & Photo BY : ANTONY STEWART Townsville Bulletin
ELI Thaiday is making inroads into following the illustrious path of big brother Sam.

Thaiday will represent a Queensland Murri team against the New South Wales Kooris in a curtain-raiser to Friday's Test between Australia and New Zealand in Brisbane.

Like Sam, who plays for the Brisbane Broncos in the NRL and has represented Queensland and Australia, the 15-year-old is a powerful ball runner with plenty of skill.

Thaiday will be joined in the team by Kirwan High School classmates Andrew Pryor and Daniel Bartlett for the clash at Suncorp Stadium.

Kirwan High's health and physical education head of department George Bartlett said the trio had taken the selection in their stride, but expected things to change on the night.

"I really don't think they have got any genuine understanding (of what's ahead of them) ... I think it's going to be a big thing for them," he said.

"At the moment they're just quietly excited about it, but once they get into the camp and once they get into that environment I think it will be quite awe-inspiring for them."

The trio were selected after performing strongly in numerous local competitions and indigenous competitions held in Townsville and surrounding regions.

They go into camp with the Queensland Murri team tomorrow.

Thaiday, a forward, is capable of lining up in the front or back row or even at hooker, while Pryor, 15, is a prop and Bartlett, 15, is a fullback.

George Bartlett said Thaiday possessed many of the characteristics of his brother.

"Certainly when he runs he has that quite powerful running style that Sam has," he said.

"I do see parts of Sam in him when he does play, but he is his own person too.

"I think it's been a pretty tough thing to follow in the footsteps of a brother like Sam, but he can hold his own Eli, he's quite a powerful young fella."

Thaiday, Pryor and Bartlett's representative commitments mean they will miss out on playing for Kirwan High in the first game of the Cowboys Challenge Super 8s this evening.

Kirwan go head-to-head with arch-rivals Ignatius Park College at Kern Brothers Drive from 5pm.

"While it would have been nice to call upon them, they're still in Grade 11 and we've certainly got other kids from Grade 12 who will be there," Bartlett said.

BOMBER BRASINGTON FAILS TO STOP EELS
ourfootyteam logo
The Parramatta Eels have beaten the gallant Magpies from Western Suburbs 40-16 in the Harold Matthews Cup semi-final at St Marys Stadium St Marys on Saturday.

The match was played in fine conditions.

Ourfootyteam.com predicted earlier in the week that Wests five eighth Mitchell Brasington would test makeshift fullback Vai Toutai under the high ball.

It didn’t take long for bomber Brasington to commence the testing. In the 3rd minute he sent his first moon ball up. Under significant pressure Toutai dropped the ball.

A scrum is then set with the Magpies put in. From this set of six tackles the ball is sent wide with winger Thomas Sauvau stepping inside the Eels defenders to score the first try.

West 4 - 0.

This was to be the only time Toutai dropped a ball all match.

From then on he caught everything that came his way and went on to play a great match.

In the 7th minute bomber Brasington sends up another moonie.

This time a Parramatta defender knocks him down in a late tackle and the referee awards a penalty to the Magpies 12 metres out and right in front of the sticks.

Bomber Brasington steps up and kicks the penalty. Wests 6 - 0.

A few minutes later Eels centre Soane Manumu’a picks up the ball from dummy half 10 metres out from the Maggies line and avoided a number of defenders in an angled run to the line.

It is now 6 - 6.

In the 16th minute Eels prop Josh Neale made his supporters groan when he decided to go himself instead of passing to his support player half back Troy Errington. It was a try bombed. Maybe we should call Josh “the bomber” as well!

In the 19th minute Eels prop Adam McMillan hit a hole from about ten metres out after a good cut out pass from John Asiata and scored next to the posts.

Parramatta went into the break leading 12 - 6.

Three minutes into the second half Eels lock Frazer Masinamua scored in the corner after good lead up work by Asiata again. Eels lead 18 - 6.

But Wests were not done. These brave and talented players from the west are a really competitive team. It was their inspirational skipper and prop Jake Townsend that got them back into the match.

He received the ball fifteen metres out from the Parramatta line and charged towards the Eels defence challenging their players to tackle him.

They didn’t and the score becomes Eels 18 - 10.

That piece of inspirational play fired up the Wests boys. In the 41st minute they put up a cross field kick but a mix-up between Eels players Kelepi Tanginoa and Robbie Kamota made the ball go free.

Magpie Keanu Rodgers swooped on the ball and scored a great try to take Wests within two points of the lead. Eels 18 - 16.

Perhaps a turning point in the game came in the 45th minute of the game when dashing Magpie fullback James Tedesco made a sensational break from his try line and ran thirty five metres upfield.

Pursuing him were a number of Eels defenders including the biggest winger in Harold Matthews Cup history, the 110 kg Kelepi Tanginoa.

Like a mugger in a dark alley Tanginoa crashed into Tedesco from behind in a legitimate tackle and in the process jolted the ball from Tedesco’s grasp.

Star fullback Vai Toutai was Johnny on-the-spot as he regathered the ball and ran nearly 50 metres avoiding various West’s defenders to score an unexpected try against the run of play.

Wests were on fire before that try. They had scored two tries to be within two points of Parramatta.

You have to wonder what might have happened if Wests had scored next off the brilliant break from Tedesco?

Parramatta Eels v Wests Magpies Matty's Cup Semi Final ACTioN (Photo's : ourfooty media)

But after that try it was all Parramatta.

In the 53rd minute best on ground second rower Jordan Malaki scored after a determined run ten metres out when he brushed off several defenders.

Next it was hooker Robbie Kamoto who hit a hole in the 56th minute.

Then two minutes from time Josh Neale made up for his earlier error of not passing to an unmarked support by running fifty metres in a great individual try.

Fulltime Eels defeated West 40 - 16.

I don’t think the score was a reflection of the closeness of the game. Up until the 45th minute it was anyone’s game. The try by Toutai was the turning point. It deflated Wests and inspired the Eels.

That’s football!

Wests Magpies should be proud of their achievements this year. Coach Derek McVey has done a great job in making this team competitive on a weekly basis.

They had many stars today.

James Tedesco thrilled the crowd with his darting runs. Winger Thomas Sauvau looked good. David Nofoaluma was a real handful out in the centres. Bomber Brasington was cool as always while their front row of Pale Tanumaleu, Lachlan Bristow and Jake Townsend are as good as any running around.

Parramatta was best served by Toutai, prop Junior Paulo, Asiata, Malaki and Masinamua. Second rower Malaki was great.

Malaki means “messenger of God” and so perhaps he gets divine inspiration from above as he hurtles into opposition defences without fear. This bloke is a real handful with his exceptional work rate in attack and defence.

Undefeated Parramatta now move on to the grand final next week against the other undefeated team the Bulldogs next Saturday, kick off is at 1: PM for the Matthew's Cup Grand Final at St Marys Stadium St Marys.

There is good news for the Eels as they have their two gun players half Sean McGuinness and fullback Jacob Gagen resuming for the game next week. They will be better for their return.

So can the undefeated Parramatta beat the undefeated Bulldogs?

Stay tuned and find out later in the week with an ourfootyteam.com exclusive grand final preview.

NAVY FEAST ON MANGOES

A special appearance by former first grade referee Shaun Hampstead over saw a standout performance from Navy centre Mark Zaiter. His constant hard running at the Bathurst Mungoes line lead to a number of tries including two of his own.

A hardworking performance by hooker Bobby Ashman also garnered him two tries with many other committed performers in the 32-8 win.

The Titans scored all the points in the first half from Ashman, Shane Robson and Zaiter with Robson converting to give Navy a 14-0 lead at the break.

The roll-on continued as the second half began with three more unanswered tries to the Titans.

The first awarded to a rampaging Edward Smith followed by tries to Robson and Zaiter.

But with a bit of possession the Mungoes centre Alec McSpadden hit back scoring two four pointers for his team.

The Titans’ Daniel Capilli had the final word, scoring and converting to make the final score 32-8 in favour of the Titans.

YOUNG STAR ROPES IN COWBOYS WITH LATE TRY
Dubbo's Daily Liberal
Western Rams under-18 representative Brad Spencer came off the bench to score a 60m solo try to give Dubbo CYMS a 28-24 win in the trial match played against Wellington Cowboys at No.1 Oval on Saturday night.

The match was poised for a draw with CYMS deep in their own half and rarely threatening to break the deadlock until their last throw of the dice found Spencer on the outside who displayed speed and individual skill to eventually score in the corner.

The match was becoming the Darren Peachey and Chris Ah See show with the Wellington pair linking up on no less than four occasions.

Peachey had the football on a string with his delicate, well-weighted kicks and Ah See dutifully pounced on his offerings for four tries.

Peachey’s brilliance, along with an error-riddled CYMS attack found the Cowboys leading 20-10 at the break, with both CYMS’ first half tries coming courtesy of centre and co-coach Justin Yeo.

CYMS hit back soon after the resumption through Kane Ashby who used his pace to thread two defenders in an angling run to score in the corner.

Three minutes later Chris Jones found himself on the end of an overlap and CYMS were back to within two.

With 16 minutes on the clock and Wellington leading 20-18, Cowboys captain Paul Black was back slammed on the cricket pitch and his retaliation saw the first punch thrown.

On the other side of the resulting fracas the referee, in consultation with his touch judges, saw fit to give CYMS hooker Luke Jenkins and Wellington second rower Shaun Stanley each a 10-minute breather while Wellington lock Sean Todhunter was sent from the field.

With 12 on 11 CYMS capitalised with Mick Darcy crossing over, but the stubborn Wellington attack refused to give in and Peachey put a kick cross-field which Ah See snatched from CYMS fullback Ben Bruce deep in the in-goal to score his fourth.

At 24-all the game was set up for an exciting finish. Half-breaks from Yeo and Ashby had CYMS fans out of their seats while two knock-ons from Jones in his defensive quarter gave Wellington opportunities.

But in the end it was Spencer who ran away with the match-winning try and gave Yeo one of his few reasons to smile for the night.

“We played poorly from the start and just made too many fundamental mistakes,” Yeo said.

“Although we had a few blokes missing in key positions we probably expected to do a little bit better than that.

“But especially after being down at half time we rallied well as a group.

“We’re fortunate to have these young guys like Lionel O’Mally coming through and for Brad Spencer to be able to do what he did at only 17 is obviously something that we’re very happy about.”

BRISBANE DEVILS FIND HELL ON EARTH

The Bulldogs have smashed the Brisbane based Norths Devils 62-10 in the SG Ball Cup semi-final at St Marys Stadium St Marys on Saturday. The match was played in fine conditions.

The Bulldogs have firmed into premiership favouritism after yesterday’s outstanding display and will play the Mexicans from across the border Melbourne in the grand final at St Marys Stadium next Saturday.

Melbourne Storm defeated Manly in the other semi final 28-14 and it sets up a delicious decider with a state of origin feel about it. So can the Storm beat the Bulldogs next week?

Find out later in the week with our exclusive preview of the grand finals! You want news on the junior reps? Look no further than ourfootyteam.com for all the latest breaking news on the grand finals.

So what happened to Norths Devils? Did this team really beat Parramatta last week? One wag suggested that the Devils left their form behind in a suitcase at Brisbane Airport yesterday.

Defeating the Eels last week in Brisbane suddenly catapulted the Devils into the semi-finals of the strongest rugby league age competition in the world – but this time it was in Sydney and against the might of Sydney powerhouse club the Bulldogs.

I posed the question in our exclusive preview earlier in the week; Can Norths Devils travel and continue their great form?

Er.....well, no is the obvious answer to that now.

The Devils found they were in a hell on earth at St Marys yesterday and nobody could help them.

But that’s enough of the Devils. Yesterday belonged to the mighty Bulldogs.

They were sensational. They are strong up front and have strike power all over the field and they have flair. Eat your heart out Parramatta – these boys aren’t robots and they like to throw the ball around and that’s why they’re in the grand final.

The scoring started in the 3rd minute when second rower Chris Thomas stormed onto a good ball from his skipper and half back Liam Ayoub and found the line. Dogs 4-0.

Six minutes later best on ground and five eighth Aidan Sezer seized upon an opportunity after a Devil’s loose pass was batted back infield by their centre Joel Bailey. Like a thief in the night Sezer grabbed the ball and ran ten metres to score. Dogs 10-0.

In the 19th minute Dogs hooker Mark Gordon noticed the Devil’s defence asleep and scored from dummy half five metres out. Dogs lead 16-0.

Two minutes later that man Sezer was in the action again when he broke the line fifty five metres out and passed to flying fullback Nathan Massey who was in support to score a great try. Dogs lead 22-0.

Just when you thought the Sezer show was finished he noticed there was no opposition fullback at home in the 29th minute. Fifty metres out he calls for the ball then expertly chips the ball over the confused Devil’s defence. He then regathers the ball on the bounce and scorched the St Marys turf to score a great try. Dogs lead 28-0.

Big Dogs winger Ratu Tagive scored a good try right on half time after good lead up work by Chris Thomas, centre Richard Irwin and Massey put him over in the corner to give the Dogs a half time score of 34-0.

It took six minutes of play in the second half for the Dogs to continue the slaughter. Massey and Sezer combined again after the latter chipped for him to regather and score twelve metres out. Dogs 40-0.

Skipper Ayoub was next on the try scoring queue. He noticed his halves mate Sezer was going pretty good with the chips and you could hear him thinking aloud in the 48th minute and twelve metres out from the Devils line; should I chip and try and regather?

Yes son – go for it! And he did. Dogs 46-0.

Goal kicking centre Ali Hijazi was next. He saw his backline partners Massey and Sezer waiting for the ball and their mouths drooling for another score. He got sick of kicking all the goals and not scoring a try. So he fixed that in the 50th minute when he picked up the ball from dummy half and found the white line. Dogs 52-0.

The Devils finally got on the board with a try to centre Aaron Whitchurch after good lead up work inside in the 55th minute. Dogs 52-6.

Five minutes later the Devils went in again after winger Michael Lucas scored in the corner after the Bulldogs argued he had stepped into touch. Dogs 52-10.

The Dogs finished off the slaughter in the 63rd and 70th minutes of play through tries by winger Chris Taripo and Alai Taufaao.

Fulltime 62-10.

Best players for the Devils were NSWCHS rep and lock Chris Binge and centre Aaron Whitchurch.

The Bulldogs had many stars. None better that sensational five eighth Aidan Sezer who set up numerous tries, scored two tries himself and kicked nine goals for a personal tally of 26 points. Well done Aidan. You entertained us all.

Other great players were prop Teni Waipouri, half Liam Ayoub, hooker Mark Gordon, second rower Chris Thomas, Massey and Hijazi.

I’m already drooling at the mouth waiting for the clash of Waipouri against Melbourne’s giants Sepati Afu and Jordan McLean next week.

BULLDOGS V NORTHS DEVILS

The big question?

Can Norths Devils travel and continue their great form?

People underestimating this team should give themselves an uppercut. They have not been beaten this year.

They were undefeated in the Mal Meninga Cup and amassed a points for and against of 266/50 over seven games.

Two weeks ago they beat Townsville Stingers 20-18 in the final of the Mal Meninga Cup. Last week they produced a boilover and whacked the highly rated Parramatta Eels in their quarter final match.

They did it in style too coming from a 14-4 deficit at half time to topple their illustrious opposition 26 - 20 at Langlands Park Brisbane.

They have been hit this week with the news that gun prop Jesse Rogers who scored two tries last week against the Eels will probably miss the game through injury.

Add to that late breaking news that their outstanding pivot Bryce Heggarty may be prevented from playing due to a tug-of-war over the use of his services by union and league. (UPDATE : Bryce Heggarty decided to play rugby league, good on ya Bryce)

It’s been reported in the Courier Mail that Hegarty’s school Marist Brothers Ashgrove wants his to play in a school trial. Let’s hope sanity prevails and Hegarty is allowed to play for Norths on Saturday in the biggest game of his young life.

The Bulldogs have had a great season with their only loss being to the Newtown Jets in round one. They have had some close games

PLAYERS TO WATCH:

Bulldogs: Fullback Nathan Massey, under rated centre Richard Irwin, tryin scoring machine Ali Hijazi.

Brisbane Norths: Lock Chris Binge, five eighth Bryce Hegarty, half back Zac Bishop

PK’S TIP: I was going to tip Norths Devils in a close one but uncertainty over the fitness of Rogers and the availability of Hegarty has made me change my mind. I think the Bulldogs will win by 10.

MANLY V MELBOURNE

The big question? Can Manly keep their giant killer quest going and fly the Sydney flag in the grand final for Sydney next week?

I’m not sure they can. They have had some tremendous results of late beating competition favourites St George and then knocking off Queensland’s second best team Townsville Stingers in last week’s quarter final.

But look at their form in the normal rounds of competition.

The week before they lost to St George 50 - 20.

In round seven they got smacked by the Newtown Jets 36-10. They also recorded losses against Penrith, North Sydney (ouch! That one would have hurt!) and a round four loss to Melbourne their opponents on Saturday 38-6.

This mob virtually scraped into the finals series. So which Manly will turn up to St Marys Stadium this week?

Melbourne on the other hand is the real deal. They field one of the biggest teams in the competition from prop forward Sepati Junior Afu who weighs in at 123 kgs out to the centres where Slade Griffin is a 90 kg rock.

They play a very structured game with Afu hitting the ball up hard and big second rowers Sam Martin and Kenny Bromwich hitting the edges.

Out wide they have amazing strike power in centres Slade Griffin and Justin O’Neill. Kiwi Griffin made the NZ under 18 team in 2008 while Townsville’s O’Neill represented Australia AIS last year.

I watched Afu play against Newcastle last week and I thought he seemed to be carrying an injury with his leg heavily taped and was used very judiciously by the Storm coaches.

PLAYERS TO WATCH:

Manly: Fullback Sione Ala, Half and ex Bronco Gary Riccardi, half turned hooker Malcolm Parry and I like the look of their viking-looking prop Magnus Stromquist from Narrabeen Sports High School.

Melbourne: Centres O’Neill and Griffin, prop Afu, second rowers Martin and Bromwich.

PK’s tip: The Manly fairytale will end on Saturday with a big win to the Melbourne Storm

PARRAMATTA EELS V WESTERN SUBURBS MAGPIES

The big question? Can Parramatta get through this game without their two star players fullback Jacob Gagen and half Sean McGuinness?

Gagen has a hamstring injury and will miss the game while McGuinness is serving a suspension for a spear tackle.

I suspect that the Eels will play centre Vai Toutai at fullback. This bloke has had a sensational year destroying teams at centre. I think he can do the same at fullback and Wests will need to be on alert for his running ability from kick returns.

At the same time he will have to be on alert from the Magpies mad bomber Mitchell Brasington. PK’s sources reveal Wests intend to bomb Toutai and test him out. This boy just doesn’t kick the ball like a normal human being – he sends it to the sky and it brings rain!

And if Parramatta thinks they can pressure this boy I’ve got news for them. He stands so deep – in the Wally Lewis mould – that it is almost impossible to lay a glove on him. Good luck Vai!

The Magpies are a good industrious team and they don’t back off from a tough game. Centre David Nofoaluma is a noted try scorer and knows his way to the line.

The Eels will also have to be on guard against hooker Lachlan Bristow who strikes like a death adder from dummy half when you least expect. Prop Pale Tanumaleu is a strong prop and will give his team plenty of respect.

But the Eels have not been beaten this year although they have had two draws earlier in the season. Coach Chris Bradbury has moulded his team into a fine attacking unit since those shaky results.

They have also the best defence in the competition. Their points for and against after nine rounds was 322/86. The Magpies was 286/198.

The Maggies can obviously score points but they are point leakers as well.

It is this area of the game that I think the Eels will get on top of the Magpies. While Wests will be competitive they will discover that the Parramatta brick wall in defence is something they have not been accustomed to.

PLAYERS TO WATCH:

Wests: Centre David Nofoaluma, the mad bomber five eighth Mitchell Brasington, prop Pale Tanumaleu, hooker Lachlan Bristow.

Parramatta: Fullback Vai Toutai, props Junior Paulo and Josh Neale, 110 kg winger Kelepi Tanginoa and half Troy Errington.

PK’S TIP: Parramatta Eels will win by 18 points.

BULLDOGS V NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS

The big question? Can the Newcastle Knights wake from their nightmare of last year’s Harold Matthews semi-final against Parramatta when they led by 22 points with 12 minutes left only to lose 34 - 28?

There are a few players from that team who are backing up again on Saturday and I know many Knight’s officials still have cold sweats at night time. It is my view that the Knights are serial chokers when it comes to big end of season games in junior reps.

The Bulldogs defeated Newcastle defeated the Knights in a round six fixture 26-20. Showing they don’t like facing teams from Western Sydney they also lost against Western Academy and Parramatta during the normal rounds of competition.

On the other hand the Bulldogs have left a trail of destruction behind them while they have remained undefeated.

Newcastle have some great players like second rower Jason Savin, half Shay Padberg and Lock Jeremy Ma’a and they will put up a great fight.

The Dogs look formidable with strike power all over the paddock from fullback Peter Irwin to second rowers Saia Tanginoa and David Minute.

Ultimately this will be the difference between the two teams with the Dogs having too many big guns.

Everyone wants to see a Bulldogs v Parramatta grand final so come on Newcastle just do the right thing by all the Sydney supporters!

PLAYERS TO WATCH:

Newcastle: prop Felise Taufaao, hooker Adam Clydesdale, centre Nicholas Ritter, second rower Jason Savin, half Shay Padberg and Lock Jeremy Ma’a.

Bulldogs: fullback Peter Irwin, second rowers David Minute and Saia Tanginoa and crafty back Luke Vella.

PK’s tip: Bulldogs by 10.

RUGBY CODES CLASH FOR BRYCE HEGARTY
Courier Mail

A TEENAGE Brisbane footy star was last night at the centre of a code war and forced to make the biggest call of his life - rugby league or rugby union.

Classy playmaker Bryce Hegarty, the 16-year-old son of former Manly and Valleys utility Steve Hegarty, had been set to line up for the Norths Devils in their national ARL league under-18 finals clash against the Bulldogs on the weekend.

UPDATE:The teenager has chosen to play rugby league

But the young footy prodigy, who attends renowned rugby union school Marist College, Ashgrove, has been told by school officials he must play in a rugby union trial on the same day.

It is believed powerbrokers have told the youngster he will not be considered for anything higher than Third XV this season if he opts out of the union trial.

If Hegarty opts to play for Norths it will effectively torpedo his hopes of higher rugby union honours.

Norths coach Mark Murray claimed school officials were "blackmailing" the youngster by delivering such an ultimatum.

"They are effectively blackmailing the kid and I don't think that should be the position of schools," Murray said.

"There is no black and white in this situation and everyone has to be flexible with their demands and communicate.

"This is now a no-win situation for Bryce because whatever he does he's going to be disappointing a lot of people.

"There is too much heat on these kids to make such big decisions at such a young age. It's not the first time this has happened but a lot of these things can be worked out by communication. I have left a message with the school but haven't heard back."

Hegarty is a fine young talent and it is believed he has already been sounded out by NRL clubs.

Steve Hegarty would not comment on the tug of war other than to confirm his son had been told by the school that he was expected to play in the union trial this weekend.

Marist Brothers head of sport Brendan Kiernan did not return Courier-Mail calls yesterday.

MACKAY TOO GOOD IN SCHOOLBOYS' SHOWDOWN
Story & Photo BY : Steele Taylor Mackay's Daily Mercury

Mackay State High School overcame a dusty start to brush aside traditional adversaries St Patrick's College at South Mackay last night.

In what is dubbed by many as Mackay's biggest school sport rivalry, the Milton Street boys over-powered their opponents 36 - 4 at the Junior Rugby League Grounds to open their Super 8 campaign with a vital victory.

“It was a tale of two halves,” MSHS coach Don Saunders said.

“We didn't play that well in the first half and they didn't play well in the second.”

St Pat's opened the scoring but Milton St hit back to lead 12 - 4 at the break before running away with the match.
Saunders praised the efforts of second-rower Jordan White and halfback Dylan Smith and said his side would improve on that performance.

“I did expect us to be a bit rusty - we haven't had a trial for five weeks,” he said.

“We've just got to be more relaxed and get into the rhythm of the game.”

Mackay High will next meet Emmaus College in Rockhampton while St Pat's faces a daunting challenge against St Brendan's in Yeppoon.

Meanwhile, in the under 15 match last night Milton Street scored a convincing win over Mercy College to kick-start their Challenge crusade.. LEARN MORE ABOUT THE MACKAY ACADEMY

STORM BLOWS KNIGHTS OFF THE GROUND

Those Mexicans from across the border known as Melbourne Storm defeated Newcastle 22 - 16 in the SG Ball fixture at Brookvale Oval last Saturday. The match was played in fine conditions.

Melbourne second rower Sam Martin started proceedings in the 6th minute when he burst through the line from five metres out to score.

Three minutes later his second row buddy Kenny Bromwich scored after the Knights spilt a bomb. Storm 12 Knight 0.

Shortly after Melbourne’s winger Eddie Faamausili scored after five eighth John Aldridge gave him the ball after drawing the defence. The Storm was ahead 18 - 0 after fifteen minutes of play.

The Knights hit back in the 18th minute after the ball was spread wide to centre Aaron Fairweather who scored. Melbourne 18 - 4.

Two minutes before half time aptly-named Newcastle hooker Chris Knight, like a shot out of a cannon, showed blistering pace ten metres out from dummy half and scored a great individual try to make the half time score Melbourne 18 leading Newcastle 10.

Knight is displaying the same pace when he was junior NSW sprint champion a few years back.

It was the Storm who drew first blood in the second half with a try to fast winger Young Tonumaipea after he was the happy recipient of a cut out pass from prop Matt Constantinou. Melbourne 22 - 10.

Newcastle got a consolation try near fulltime when Knight’s half Tyrone Roberts sent a long ball to his winger Chanel Mata’utia-Leifi who scored in the corner.

By the way – how many Mata’utia’s are there playing for Newcastle Knights?

Fulltime Melbourne 22 defeated Newcastle 16.

While it was a close result I always felt Melbourne had the Knights measure during the game. The Knights traditionally don’t measure up in the big end of season games in junior reps and Saturday was no exception.

Melbourne goes on and plays the unpredictable Manly side in the semi-final on Saturday at St Marys Stadium St Marys.

I like Melbourne but they are a bit like the Parramatta team in that they seem to take the foot off the peddle in the second half.

I think a lot of it is to do with fitness and their lack of mobility with their big guys. I think they get fatigued in the latter parts of a game.

They will need to be on alert against the smaller more mobile Manly team who are full of confidence after consecutive wins over premiership favourites St George and Queensland’s second strongest team Townsville Stingers.

Melbourne Storm 22 (Faamausili, Martin, Bromwich, Tonumaipea tries, Aldridge 3 goals) defeated Newcastle Knights 16 (Knight, Fairweather, Mata’utia-Leifi tries, Roberts 2 goals)

JOEY JOHNS INSPIRES NEWCASTLE TO WIN BATTLE OF THE F3
ourfootyteam logo
A pre-game motivational talk from Knight’s league legend Andrew “Joey” Johns in the dressing sheds inspired the Newcastle Knights to defeat Central Coast Storm 34-10 in the Harold Matthews fixture at Brookvale Oval last Saturday.

The pep talk fired up the Newcastle boys who ran out with their eyes rolling around like poker machine reels but it was their F3 neighbours the Central Coast Storm who were first to the scoreboard.

A nicely timed cross field kick from Storm five eight Adam McInnes in the 10th minute led to winger Matthew Ikuvalu to score a try.

The Storm looked like a well drilled outfit as they had the better of the Knights in the opening stanza with well-rehearsed run-around moves part of their modus-operandi.

But a critical decision to sin bin Storms Adam McInnes for an infringement in the 21st minute was going to prove fatal for their chances of winning the game.

While he was off the field Newcastle hit back with a vengeance by scoring two tries in the 23rd and 27th minutes of the game.

The first by winger Ryan Wood after good lead up work by second rower James Elias who offloaded a good pass to centre Nicholas Ritter who drew the last line of defence with an easy pass to Wood who ran ten metres to score a try.

The second try came after enterprising play by half back Shay Padberg who passed to Ashley Hazard and then doubled around him to receive the ball again and race ten metres to the line for a good try that bamboozled the Storm defence.

The Knights went into the break leading 10-4.

Six minutes after the break Knights rake Adam Clydesdale dives over the line from close range after sustained pressure on the Storm’s line. Newcastle 16-4.

The battle of the F3 was not over. Speedy Storm centre Brandon Liaina showed everyone how fact he was by intercepting a Newcastle pass and racing fifty metres to the line in the 39th minute. Newcastle lead 22-10.

The rest of the game was all the Knights way with tries in the 45th, 48th and 51st minutes of play.

The first was after goal-kicking centre Nicholas Ritter finished off a prolonged passing movement involving numerous players. Ritter had a good game scoring a try and kicking five goals for a personal tally of fourteen points. Newcastle 22-10.

The second one came after bruising prop Felise Taufaao was unstoppable close to the line. Knights 28-10.

The Knights final try came from a great passing movement which started fifty metres from the Storm line. Newcastle second rower Jason Savin broke the line and then fed lock Jeremy Ma’a who then passed to the flying Pat Mata’utia-Leifi who raced twenty five metres to score a spectacular try.

The Newcastle boys were ecstatic after the game. Watching the boys walk from the ground was a beaming and proud legend Joey Johns. His boys had delivered.

Final score Newcastle 34 Storm 10.

Newcastle now meets the Bulldogs in a great semi-final match up at St Mary's Leagues Stadium St Mary's this Saturday.

Newcastle 34 (Ritter, Mata’utia-Leifi, Wood, Padberg, Clydesdale, Taufaao tries, Ritter 5 goals) def Central Coast 10 (Ikuvalu, Liana tries, Kaaka goal)
