The Sharks SG Ball team are just so close to beating the top teams it's not funny.

The Sharks today battled the Canterbury Bulldogs at Toyota Stadium and after 70 minutes of excellent rugby league could not get their noses in front.

The Bulldogs are an excellent side and had to work very hard for their 2 points against a Sharks team that can excite and score from anywhere on any footy field as they did today ripping up Toyota Stadium scoring some great tries.

Skipper Chad Townsend and team must be confident going into the business end of the season with the Raiders next week at home, the Sharks are good enough to do good in the finals.

The Sharks Harold Matthew's Cup team came up against the best side in the comp today and battled bravely for most of the game.

The Bulldogs are a hot outfit, they play hard and fast footy and had the Cronulla boys on the back foot playing catch up footy for most of the game.

Jezza was good making plenty of good meters, Mick Lichaa snuck in from dummy for a classic hookers try early in the second half and the Sharks looked in the game at 6 - 10, all the boys did good things, the Doggies did them better.

The Cronulla Junior League official trials continued with practice games on at most Shire venues & it was great to see a lot of the youngsters come across the road to support the District Rep's in their local footy jumpers & gear.

The Junior League season kicks off next weekend and the junior league have promised to have the draw out early this week, c'mon deano.

In my match preview I tipped the surfies to win a tight match by four points.

I understand the Westies were looking for PK after the match apparently to give me some good advice about football tipping.

OK boys I got it wrong but I really thought the surfies would have too much pace for you.

How wrong I was!

Parramatta won this convincingly 30-4 in a six trys to one rout.

At half time it was an even affair and perhaps they should bottle coach Chris Bradbury’s words of advice too because like the SG Ball it was a different game in the second half.

The first half was a gritty affair with both teams vying for field position. At half time it was one try a piece.

The second half produced another five trys to the Eels. A double by representative fullback Jacob Gagen were the highlights.

In one he fielded a kick on his ten metre line and ran through the whole team using his speed and swerve to great effect.

His other try came off a Sean McGuinness kick from a scrum win with Gagen retrieving the ball and scoring a great try.

Cronulla never gave up but the Eels big forwards were making plenty of yards up the middle and none were better than prop Josh Neale and second rower Jordan Malaki.

Parramatta is an enigmatic team. In my view they are not as good a team as last year’s premiership winning Eels Matthews team.

They don’t share the ruthless defence or consistency of their predecessors. Time will tell but perhaps they are getting their act together after two good wins in succession.

As for Cronulla they play the Bulldogs next week so it doesn’t get any easier. If they play as well as they did in the first half against Parramatta then I’m sure they will be competitive against the Dogs,

WESTIES RIDE WAVE OF SUCCESS OVER SURFIES
ourfootyteam logo
The Parramatta Westies have conquered the might of Southern Sydney by defeating the Cronulla Surfies in both Harold Matthews Cup and SG Ball yesterday at Cabramatta Sports Ground.

In SG Ball Cronulla led the ball game 28-26 with three minutes to go and looked set to send the westies packing back to their fibros and cause the biggest shock in the competition this year.

A Houdini act led by Parramatta half back Josh Murray whose cut-out pass found centre Josh Tuitupou who with a well timed pass found flying winger Daniel Tupou who sprinted to the try-line and scored in the corner.

Then in the dying seconds of the game the Sharkies mounted another raid on the Eels line just falling short. Full time hooter sounds and a great game of football ends. Parramatta 30 Cronulla 28.

A collective sigh of relief could be heard around the Cabramatta ground from Eels supporters who nearly saw their quarter million dollar team rolled.

As I walked around the ground after the game there was a common belief by most supporters that the best team had lost.

Cronulla didn’t win but they did themselves, their club and supporters proud. It’s an old saying but the game was the winner today.

The game started out with both teams giving it to each other with big tackles the order of the day. None better than the big hit by Cronulla second rower James “hitman” Hasson who crash tackled Parramatta half Josh Murray.

The hit reverberated around the ground and to Murray’s credit the tough little bloke from Wagga got to his feet immediately.

The score see-sawed in the first half. In the third minute Eels five eight Jason Wehbe put up a cross-kick for debut winger Daniel Tupou to jump above his opposite and score in the corner.

The surfies hit back soon after with fast winger Chris Nasr finishing off a good backline movement.

That man Wehbe again was soon in the action when he scores a try from dummy half and exposed weak Sharks defence.

In the 20th minute Cronulla scored through their other winger Joseph Rokoqo who was the happy recipient of a cut-out pass from a team mate.

Parramatta respond when centre Rory Brien scores and by now it’s Parramatta leading 14-10.

The Eels welcomed back big second rower John Leiataua from injury yesterday and it didn’t take him long to get back into the action. A deft cut-out pass to his winger Thomas Vandermade who scores now made it 20-10.

This was quickly followed by another try to Eels second rower Olomanu Usini and the Eels went to the break leading 26-10 and it looked like a case of by how much Parramatta in the second half.

Whatever was said by Cronulla coach Tony Herman at half time should be bottled. What we saw was a second half fight back reminiscent of the great Shark sides of the 70’s as they outscored the Eels by three trys to one.

First it was James Spencer who got the ball rolling in the 42nd minute by diving over from dummy half. This was followed by a show and go by Shark half Chad Townsend who scores under the posts and Cronulla are now 26-22 down and a whiff of a chance.

The former NSWCHS player had a great game with his determined and heady game along with his accomplished kicking game.

Then came the best moment of the game in the 55th minute with crowd pleasing winger Joseph Rokoqo cutting a swath through the flimsy Eel defence to score a thrilling 50 metre individual try.

Rokoqu must have had spiders on him such was the reluctance of the Parramatta players to tackle him. Townsend converts and Cronulla are ahead by 28-26 with 15 to go.

Parramatta were trying too hard to get back in the game with passes going to ground and some panicky decision making. Cronulla were giving as good as they were getting and by now their players were charging into the fray with new found enthusiasm.

It looked like the fairytale was going to happen.

Then with three minutes remaining Eels half Josh Murray ruined everything with the start of his Houdini act.

SG BALL GO SOOOOOOO CLOSE
NSWRL District Rep's Round 6 Wrap
The Cronulla Sharks played in possibly the best SG Ball match of the season so far when they stuck it to the Parramatta Eels at Cabramatta on Saturday, but in the end lost by 2 miserable points.

It was an effort all the boys should be very proud of, after all the Eels scored their winning try from a forward pass and scooted in the corner after a desperate & powerful final surge to the line. MaTCH RePoRT ToMZ

THe Matthew's cup boys faced a very serious challenge today against the Powerful Parramatta Eels who easily accounted for the highly rated Newcastle knights last week.

Parramatta held a slim 6 - 4 lead at the half time break and worked very hard as a unit in the first half with Adam Thorogood scoring in the corner or was it Brendan Kerry, it was a top try anyway, and the only joy for the Matty's Cup boys.

Bad judgment by the ref sendingthe in form Rea Pittman to the bin for 10 completely broke the Sharks and they fell apart in the last 15 or so minutes allowing the Eels to race in 20 unanswered points. MaTCH RePoRT ToMZ

CRONULLA JUNIOR LEAGUE TRIALS
Good luck to all teams playing their 1st official CSDJRFL trials today.

It appears not all teams will be trialing today due to the crazy playing periods arranged, so A's games are set down for 15 & 20 minute halves and it looks like A grade coaches will give the B's a good hit out while the A grade players won't even bother to take their footy boots.

Who blames them, trials should be trials for the up coming footy season and should be full games.

Meanwhile, the Junior League will hopefully releasing the 2009 draw early next week.

Also good luck to the Sharks District rep's who take on powerhouse the Parra Eels in round 6 at Cabramatta Stadium.

SURFIES VS WESTIES

MATCH PREVIEW

You can have your battle of the west, local derbies and traditional grudge matches but the one on everyone’s lips is....... drum roll please......Yes folks it’s the Surfies vs Westies aka the Cronulla Sharks versus the Parramatta Eels junior reps challenge.

The showdown is on Saturday at Cabramatta Sports Ground (or “Cabra” in the local Parra lingo).

HAROLD MATTHEWS CUP

It’s 4th vs 5th spot this week in what shapes as a great contest.

The Sharks only loss has been to the much-vaunted Newcastle side while the Eels haven’t lost a game but have two drawn results against Illawarra and South Sydney. Interestingly they smashed Cronulla’s conqueror Newcastle last week 26 - 6.

The surfie boys are on a high and it’s not because of riding some big waves this week down at Cronulla beach in Indian summer conditions. No sir.

These boys are the real deal with four wins from five starts with 114 points for and 68 against. Parramatta’s stats are very similar with 120 points for and 66 against.

It’s going to be a battle of Parramatta muscle versus Sharks flair.

The key for the Sharks is not to play the Eels in the forwards.

Their modus-operandi on Saturday should be to throw the ball around and move the big Eels forwards around to tire them. That should pave the way for speedsters such as centre Rea Pittman and winger Brendon Kerry to cut through the Parramatta defence with their prodigious speed.

Front rower Zac Wedesweiler should be prominent in proceedings while their hooker Micheal Lichaa knows the way to the tryline.

Eels props Junior Paulo and Josh Neal will give them plenty of go-forward while centre Vai Tautai is always dangerous. The challenge for Cronulla is can they contain the speed and skills of reprentative fullback Jacob Gagen?

They need to kick the ball out if possible on the 5th tackle because Gagen is such a devastating kick returner he could cut the Sharks to pieces. Shutting him down will go a long way to securing Cronulla a win.

PK’s tip: Cronulla surfies to send the Westies back to their fibros by winning a tight match by four points.

The Sharks will have too much speed.

SG BALL

The Parramatta boys are on a high and it’s not because they have been jumping off the high tower at the new Parramatta Pools complex.

It’s more to do with their unbeaten run so far in the competition. Five wins from five outings and 216 points (2nd to the Bulldogs) for and only 52 against (Best defence in comp) is daunting opposition for any team to face.

The team estimated to be worth a quarter of a million dollars with eight imports from New Zealand, Queensland and NSW Country has had its shares devalued this week. And it’s not due to any global economic crises.

Unfortunately for them, but good for him, Pat O’Hanlon the big Queenslander from Mackay has been elevated to the Eel’s Toyota Cup team.

He has been an immense success for the Eels Ball side this season by scoring five trys and setting up many more with deft offloads to try hungry support players. The obvious question is how much will Parramatta miss Big Pat?

According to Eels insiders they have a ready made replacement in a lad by the name of Krys Freeman. Who?

Er.... well he is the son of you know who, the former cheeky Kiwi halfback we all loved to hate when he pulled the black and white jersey of NZ on, one Gary Freeman.

Freeman junior is a fiery redhead with a heart as big as Phar Lap and is a different player to O’Hanlon. Watch for his outstanding work-rate in attack and defence.

Cronulla on the other hand are lying in 6th position with three wins from five matches. They started the season well with wins over Balmain and the highly fancied Newcastle.

They lost their next two to front runners St George and in a shock result to Western Academy.

They rejoined the winner’s circle last week by beating Western Suburbs with centre Haydn Peacock in outstanding form scoring three trys.

I’m told the form of the big front row forward from Coffs Harbour Joel Tubbs is good and they will need his fearless charges into the ruck against the Eels on Saturday.

Other players that will threaten the Parramatta machine should be strong running fullback Tyler Jarden and crafty half Chad Townsend who will lead the team around the paddock.

PK’s tip : Parramatta will win by 12 against a fired up Sharks outfit and send the surfies back south with their surfboards between their legs.

Parramatta will miss O’Hanlon hence no big score this week.

De La Salle Cronulla Defeated Heathcote HS 10 - 34 today & yesterday Aquinas Collage Menai defeated Cronulla HS 26 - 0

Heathcote High School hosted the round 1 Arrive alive Cup match with De La Salle Cronulla today, the game was played on Heathcote High's top paddock and but all accounts was a good game played in the true spirit of junior rugby league.

Cronulla had too much fire power for the Heathcote boys who defended very well for the 1st 10 minutes before the De La onslaught began.

MoRe SooN, anyone want to write a match report from this game or yesterdays Aquinas College thumping of Cronulla High?

Both the Sharks Harold Matthew's & SG Ball Cup teams returned from Campbelltown Stadium with the points in this weeks round 5 District Reps clash.

The Harold Matthew's Boys won a tight affair by only 2 points in a game with which the Ref had a big influence. Too big an influence in some opinions at the ground.

Brett Denford, Michael Lichaa & Rea Pittman all crossed the line and Brandon Kerry's accurate kicking with 3 from 3 the difference on the scoreboard.

Zac Wedesweiler had a huge game, breaking the line and almost running at will, Nesiasi Mataitonga and Nathan Brown had good games and the rest of the team did their jobs too.

In the SG Ball clash the Sharks had a slightly slow start then the boys got their act together really well and piled on the points against an opposition team playing good footy.

What a wonderful sight it is to see Haydn Peacock back in good form, when Hayd's runs, electricity flow through the force with the expectancy of something exciting about to happen.

Today Hayd's didn't disappoint, scoring 3 tries, James Hasson started the ball rolling for the Sharks, Chad Townsend kicked the 1st of his 5 conversions for the day, Tyler Jarden scored again as did Chris Nasr, and 5/Eight Callum capped of another fine game with a 4 pointer of his own.

JUNIOR SHARKS SHARE THE SPOILS AGAIN

ourfootyteam logo

A resounding win by the under-16 Matthews Cup Sharks, their third in four matches, was offset somewhat by a disappointing performance by the SG Ball Sharks who slumped to a second successive loss on what was a mixed Saturday afternoon for the Sharks District Representative teams in matches played against the Western Sydney Academy.

The Matthews Sharks, led up front by prop forward Zac Wedesweiler and out wide by winger Brandon Kerry who crossed for four tries on the day, kept up their winning momentum with a strong 30-14 victory over the Western Sydney Academy.

For the Sharks five eighth Nathan Brown was also solid, in what was his best performance so far for the Matthews Cup side this season.

The young Sharks now sit comfortably towards the top of the Matthews Cup table, with six competition points out of a possible eight.

The story for the Sharks SG Ball side was not quite as positive, Western Sydney opening up a 20-4 half time lead before going on with it in the second period to beat the Cronulla team by 28-14.

While the final margin may have appeared to be a significant one, the Sharks certainly had their chances to get back into the contest, two bombed tries soon after the break letting their opponents off the hook, with a potential comeback thwarted.

Joel Tubbs in the front row continued his recent consistent form to again be rated amongst the best players for the Ball Sharks on the afternoon.

The Sharks junior rep teams are away again next weekend, travelling to Campbelltown to take on the Western Suburbs Magpies.

ONE FROM TWO FOR YOUNG SHARKS

As was the case the previous weekend against Newcastle, the Sharks have shared the points in their district representative matches, with a win and a loss against St George.

While it was the SG Ball winning and the Matthews Cup Sharks going one week earlier, this time it was the opposite way around, with the Matthews Cup registering a 30-6 victory, while in the SG Ball the Dragons were far too good in winning by 36-12.

Both Sharks teams now boast a record of two wins from three starts.

In the first match at Toyota Stadium on Saturday the under-16 Matthews Sharks began strongly, three tries in the first 25 minutes, all out wide, saw them well in control at 12-0 in front.

Sharks tries were scored by Rea Pittman and Gavin Beattie, both on the end of slick backline movements, while the third saw Jeremy Saville rewarded after a determined effort from close range.

However just when the Sharks looked like going to the break with a handy advantage, a series of penalties against them had St George camped in the Sharks end of the field. The persistence of the Dragons was rewarded with a try in the north-western corner of Toyota Stadium, followed by a sideline conversion and at 12-6 at the break the two competition points were certainly up for grabs.

While their opponents had chances to get back into the contest, a series of fundamental errors, coupled with some desperate Sharks defence, saw the tide turn once again in favour of the home team, with three converted tries in the second half capping off a solid win for the young Cronulla side.

Saville went over for his second, while centre Nesiasi Mataitonga also crossed for a double, the last coming from an intercept and a 45-metre dash to the line.

For the Sharks Saville was amongst their best, along with Zac Wedesweiler up front, Pittman in the centres and Adam Thorogood at fullback.

Unfortunately for the Sharks the SG Ball was a totally different story to what had gone before with their younger counterparts.

Somewhat off their game in comparison to their two previous outings, the Sharks struggled to control the ball, gifting St George superior field position throughout the first half.

Down 16-0 the Sharks fought back with a try to fullback Tyler Jarden two minutes before half time to claw their way into the contest at 16-6, however the second 35 minutes told a similar story to the first, with the Dragons going on to record a convincing 36-12 win.

While disappointing, the Sharks were well served in the losing effort by Jarden at fullback who ran the ball back strongly, Joel Tubbs tried hard in the forwards and Chad Townsend directed the team well from half back.

The next round of junior reps sees the Sharks travel to Western Weekender Stadium at St Marys to play the Western Sydney Academy teams next Saturday.

The overcast conditions didn't dampen spirits at Toyota Stadium for the round 2 clash between the Cronulla Sharks and the Newcastle Knights.

Both Cronulla sides were coming off good wins in round 1

In the first few minutes of the game the Sharks spread the ball wide and found a flying Rea Pittman who beat a couple defenders in the field of play then had to desperately try to ground the ball before the Knights defence pounced.

Michael Lichaa missed difficult conversion attempt from the side line.

Cronulla held on to a four point lead for the next tem minutes or so, both sides were having trouble controlling the footy on the wet ground.

Then the Knights seemed to change gear, they started to use the ball more efficiently and were throwing the ball to both sides of Toyota Stadium.

Newcastle coach Paul Ross said after the game " The game was ugly, but effective, the Sharks game was a good reality check for the boys [after last weeks huge win], we have a lot of improving to do"

What teams do you think will be the strongest? "the Bulldogs are the ones to look out for" - thanks Paul, "yeh, no worries"

ourfooty media
Round 2 of the NSWRL District Rep's kicks off at Toyota Stadium on Saturday when we will see the mighty Sharks take on the highly rated Newcastle Knights.

The Matthew's Cup game kicks off at 2:00 PM, followed by the SG Ball who get it on with the Knights at 3:30 PM

Both teams will be confident, raring to go - good luck boys

Last week young tigers 5/8, Curtis Sironen was stretchered from the field, well the news is all good for young Curtis, he did a bit of damage to some ligaments in his ankle, and is ok to play for the Tigers when he's fit again.

According to Curtis's dad, Paul, he will be out of acton for 4 - 6 weeks, it's a real big loss to the Balmain Tigers 2009 champaign in the Harold Matthew's Cup. Keep your head up Champ.

MAGPIES SWOOP TO STEAL MATTY"S TRIAL MATCH

In an at times exciting game of junior rugby league, the Magpies swooped to to score in the last minute to save a 10 all draw at Toyota Stadium .

In a game of opposites the Cronulla boys scrambled & defended well around the ruck, it was good in the first half.

Moments of brilliance from both teams show these boys can play at Matthew's Cup level, and by the same token, it seemed the boys all suffered moments of lack in concentration.

The second half the Sharks were doing some of the things they have been training for, the heat and concentration levels caused players to be out of position and it was pretty quiet out there with not all that much talking in defence or attack.

To both teams credit, they played right up to the final siren at Shark Park in what can only be described as a fantastic Aussie summer's day. (MoRe SooN)

POSSIBLE MATTY'S CUP SQUAD

The ourfootyteam's panel of armchair experts have penciled in a most likely list to play the West Magpies in the trial game on Saturday over at Liverpool.

Having viewed the past couple trial games and most of the training sessions for the past month or two, the ourfooty armchair experts have put their years of experience together to suggest the team that could be going into the 2009 Harold Matthew's Cup to battle the 2009 footy season.

The Cronulla Sharks are investing heavily in the Cronulla juniors this year, head coach Ricky Stuart and his staff has been keeping a hopeful eye on the young Sharks, which included Ricky putting the Matthew's Cup boys through some skills drills at training only last week.

Ricky Stuart spent a lot of time watching both the Matty's & SG Ball trials from the sidelines, taking notes and an occasional smile when things went well.

It must be hard for coaches and their staff to make final decisions as to who' in & who's not.

As it becomes more apparent that the Sharks will have a much smaller squad of players for this weeks trial against the Magpies, the team should to start to gel and play as a single unit.

Most of these blokes will be playing in the toughest competition of their young lives, the NSWRL Harold Matthew's Cup.

BULLDOGS TRY TO BITE SHARKS

The Bulldogs & the Sharks Junior Reps played trial games today at Hammondville Oval with the Sharks giving as good as they got in the SG Ball.

Dave Pasqualino opened the scoring for the Sharks in today's Matthew's Cup trial game against a hot Bulldogs outfit with a good try near the corner post.

The Bulldogs Matthew's Cup squad are a big powerful combination and should give the 2009 premiership a real shake again.

The Sharks SG Ball team on the other hand easily handled the Bulldogs 2 teams winning some thing 10 tries to 5.

With the Sharks Matthew's & SG Ball players all desperately seeking to gain a place in the sides, the Sharks will only improve and look forward to an excellent year.

GOOD LUCK TO MATTY'S & SG BALL
Good luck to both the Sharks Harold Matthew's & SG Ball Cup Squads as they take on the Canterbury Bulldogs at Hammondville Oval.

The Doggies Harold Matthew's Cup side will be one of the teams to beat this year and have crushed all opponents in the trials so far.

The Sharks are a tight, fast little unit, mateship and loyalty will give the Sharks an edge, the engine room will have plenty of work controlling the footy today, if the Sharks can do what they have been training for, who know's?

The Sharks SG Ball squad have the firepower to give it to the Bulldogs, although still these games are just trials, the boys will not be holding back.

After an fantastic performance against the highly rated Canberra Raiders last week, the Sharks SG Ball side will be looking for more strong performances throughout the year.

The Sharks play the Bulldoggies again in round 7, on Sat 31 st March, this time the Sharkies play the Bulldogs at home at Shark Park.

GOOD LUCK TO BOTH THE SHARKS & BULLDOGS AND ALL TEAM PLAYING TODAY

CANBERRA RAIDERS VS CRONULLA SHARKS HAROLD MATTHEWS AT SEIFFERT OVAL
ourfooty media
The Rugby League season has dawned upon us and the off season is over.

All the district Junior Representative teams are busy sorting out their possible's and probable's for season 2009. ourfootyteam.com ventured down to the Nation’s Capitol Canberra, the venue Seiffert Oval.

The Raiders hosted the Cronulla Sharks on a day where players and a healthy large crowd would have been better suited cooling off down at the beach.

The Raiders Vs Sharks Harold Matthews squads plated 2x25 min halves and 2 x 20 min halves.

The end result had the Sharks narrowly in front in the try scoring department.

The Raiders looked slightly bigger in the forwards which made for a tough forwards encounter.

The Sharks toughed it out and to their credit got on top of the Raiders pack.

Both teams moved the ball well with the Sharks centre Nick Ratcliffe finding gaps out wide and making good attacking raids.

The Raiders looked sharp around the ruck area with their number hooker having a good game and causing the Sharks defence a few head aches.

The Sharks 10 provided the highlight of the game breaking the Raiders defensive line and running 40 meters to score untouched. Zac Wedersweiler had an impact when involved which included a good run to the line to score.

Not to be out gunned the Raiders 10 Sam Everett stormed home with a late try double, doing his chances of cementing a position a lot of good.

In all a very entertaining game from both camps, both teams having many positives to carry into their next trial game.

Both coaches would be pleased with the efforts the young men exhibited today and I am sure there will be more improvement.

Good luck to both teams and all teams in season 2009

SG BALL TRIAL VS RAIDERS
Story & Photo's BY : ourfooty media
Canberra are rated fairly well in anticipation of this years SG Ball Cup season and worked very hard against an enthusiastic Cronulla Sharks on the sam hot Saturday afternoon at Seiffert Oval.

It was a tough trail match with both teams working hard for their points.

Only a few minutes remained and the Raiders were trying to hold onto a four point lead, Sharks forward Dane Fazakerley hit the line at full steam, 2 or 3 defenders held onto him and Dan kept his legs pumping and it seemed like the Raiders defence pulled him to the line, bal down, try and the score are all a of a sudden level at 20 valuable points each.

with less than a minute to play, the scores were 20 - all, then Sharks Five/8, Sam Clune took his chance and run at the line to give the visitors a four point lead.

The Raiders quickly played the bay and were 10 meters from the Shark line and hard a couple runs and the clock beat a determined Raiders attack.
