| Australia wrapped up the two-match series with an emphatic victory over England at Shark Park, Cronulla. They ran in nine tries in a ruthless performance, taking every scoring opportunity that came their way. For long spells England were dominant but undid much of their good work by gifting their opponents tries at crucial times. A big crowd had stayed on after the Cronulla v Canberra game on a mild night in Sydney to watch the stars of the future. Australia opened the scoring after four minutes when they took advantage of a penalty to launch their first attack. They moved the ball smartly to the left enabling Nic Cotric to crash over with Sean O’Sullivan adding the extra. Cotric collected another when England defenders failed to deal with a kick through and the centre pounced on the loose ball to make it 10-0. The visitors got their first points on the board after eight minutes when a penalty gave them a good attacking platform and hooker Josh Ganson scooted over from dummy-half. Following a mistake, they were under attack from the re-start but defended their goal line well. Having soaked up the pressure they went up to the other end and forced a drop out but were unable to take advantage, a neat grubber by Ganson just rolling dead. As the game moved in the second quarter England began to dominate, some great defending forcing their opponents into errors. A fine 40/20 from Morgan Smith put them on the attack once again with Ganson sending Mikolaz Oledzki crashing over. Smith’s conversion put his side 12-10 ahead and they were soon on the attack again forcing another goal-line drop out. But disaster struck when a kick through was scooped up by Australian stand-off Lachlan Lam who sprinted 90 metres to touchdown. O’Sullivan converted to put Australia four points ahead. England’s defence was under pressure once more and finally cracked when Zak Lomax fielded a crossfield kick to score. Just before half-time they struck again through Michael Tupou and with O’Sullivan converting both, Australia led 28-12 at the interval. Australia increased their lead early in the second half when they were awarded a penalty near the England line. A long pass allowed Dean Blore to score out wide. England worked hard to get back into the game and midway through the half Craig Mullen touched down but the referee adjudged the pass forward. But any thoughts of a fightback were dashed when Lachlan Lam jinked his way over under the posts. O’Sullivan again converted to make it 38-12. England again put pressure on their opponents’ line but were unable to get that elusive score. Australia wrapped up the contest when Contric ran 70 metres to collect his hat-trick and Tiumavave Afualo forced his way over with O’Sullivan converting both. The Australian Schoolboys will play two Tests against the England Academy. The Australian Schoolboys won the first match of the series 50-26 at Dolphin Oval, Redcliffe last Sunday. A warm, sunny day in Queensland saw England get off to a bright start. After some good early defensive work, England moved the ball wide to Joe Wardill who made a break and beat the full-back Nic Cotric to score. The tourists looked good for their four point lead with some excellent kicking form scrum-half Rob Fairclough. However, a penalty gave Australia a good attacking platform deep in the England half and Cotric side-stepped his way over with Sean O’Sullivan adding the conversion to give his side the lead. They went further ahead following another penalty with the ball moved left to Mawene Hiroti who squeezed over in at the corner. O’Sullivan converted to put his side 12-4 ahead. Midway through the half England begin to exert pressure on the Australian defence forcing errors. A penalty gave them a set near the line and a short pass from Josh Ganson enabled Matty English to power over from short range, the conversion bringing them within two points. But three tries in six minutes before half-time put Australia firmly in control. Lomax claimed the first from a high bomb and prop Thomas Mikaele crossed for the second after a rampaging run to the line. Hiroti added the third on the stroke of half-time and two conversions from O’Sullivan gave the home side a 28-10 lead at the interval. England’s task was made all the more difficult having lost Caine Barnes and the influential Fairclough towards the end of the half. However, they began brightly, a repeat set saw some good early pressure which resulted in Danny Walker scooting over for a converted try. But Australia gradually took control of the game and rattled up 22 points without reply through tries from Tuimavave Afuola, Zac Lomax, O’Sullivan and Brodie Jones with O’Sullivan converting three to make it 50-16. But England had the final say with Liam Paisley crossing after some neat play and Lewis Heckford stepping over from close range. Morgan Smith wrapped things up with the conversion. England Academy coach Andy Kelly said: “We got a lesson in clinical finishing. When we made errors and gave penalties away the Australian side punished us. We lost Rob Fairclough early in the game, and one of our middles, so our rotation off the bench wasn’t great and didn’t give us a lot of options. But it’s Test Match football and you’ve still got to front up. “I just don’t think, across the park, we held our strength long enough to withstand what the Australians were doing. We’re all going to have to work harder, there’s more in our performance than we’ve shown today. “They are a very good side but we’ve seen them and their structures, so we’ll know a little bit more going into the next game. Twenty six points is a good return on our attacking football, so we asked the right questions when we had ball in hand, we’ve definitely got to be more physical and clinical.”

England Academy coach Andy Kelly has selected his 17-man squad to represent their country when they take on Australian Schoolboys on Sunday July 31 (2.00pm AEST) Dolphin Oval, Redcliffe, Queensland. The squad are into their third week in Australia and have been preparing well on the Gold Coast at the Super Sports Centre in Runaway Bay. Last week saw all players take to the field in a warm-up against Penrith Panthers at Pepper Stadium – England ran out 28-22 winners and Kelly knew selection would be hard this week. “I’ve got a squad of 23 fantastic players, selection is always going to be difficult when everyone is determined to play,” said Kelly. “We’ve looked at this game, it’s the first Test against Australia and we want to get off to the best start and make sure we’re not the team under the pump going into next week. “It’s going to be tough and tense out there on Sunday. Due to unforeseen circumstances, England Academy’s game against Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs on Saturday July 16 has been called off by the home side. With no fixture over the weekend, Sydney Roosters have stepped in and adjusted their training schedule to accommodate the Academy squad on Friday July 15 to offer the players a tour of The Sydney Football Stadium and a video session with Roosters assistant coach and former England head coach Steve McNamara. The afternoon will then end with England Academy having a team run against Sydney Roosters first team at their training facilities, going up against the likes of Shaun Kenny-Dowell, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Boyd Cordner and Daniel Tupou. Australian Schoolboys claimed the two-Test series over the New Zealand Under 18s; winning 30-6 at BMD Kougari Oval last night. While it was a much closer affair than Sunday’s opening match; Australia’s defensive effort was close to perfect, only allowing New Zealand over once in the first half. Australia opened the scoring after six minutes to put New Zealand on the back foot. Gallery: Australian Schoolboys v New Zealand Under 18 First Test However, some strong running from their forwards helped the visitors go over for their first try – but that was to be their last try for the evening. With the halftime score was 16-6 in favour of Australia; New Zealand needed to produce a strong start following the break. The first 10 minutes of the second half saw New Zealand dominate and press hard for another try; however Australia’s scrabbling defence and pressure was once again too much for the young New Zealand side. After the 13th minute of the second half, Australia’s winger Tyronne Roberts-Davis was over in the corner, extending his team’s score to 20-6; leaving New Zealand with a huge uphill battle to beat this Australian attack. With some good field position and some handling errors from New Zealand, Australia capitalised; with centre Reuben Garrick and forward Adam Keighran going over to seal back-to-back wins for Australia. Missed opportunities and poor discipline saw the game slip out of New Zealand’s hands, despite an improved effort from Sunday’s big defeat. The Kiwi side was again left scrambling against a slick attack from Australia; who won the second half by a scoreline of 18-0. The forwards for both sides were strong and dominant with some fiery performances, but Australia was again just too strong for New Zealand. Australia’s captain Nathan Cleary lead the way for his team with a two-try haul and put in a great overall performance in attack and defence. A handful of famous footballing families have helped the Australian Schoolboys deliver a crushing 70-24 defeat of the New Zealand under-18s in the first match of their two-Test series at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday. Led by captain Nathan Cleary – son of Panthers coach Ivan Cleary – and with starring performances from Jayden Butterfield and Tyronne Roberts-Davis the Aussies scored 56 unanswered points either side of half-time to blow the Kiwis off the park. Prop forward Butterfield produced the type of charges his great uncle Tony Butterfield was renowned for during his career at the Knights while Roberts-Davis showed the type of speed and class his cousin James delivered in scoring 16 tries for the Titans this season. Having come nose-to-nose in the pre-game Haka the two teams then traded tries for much of the first half before the Australian team posted back-to-back tries to take a 24 - 18 lead into half-time. The home side were first to score when Rueben Cotter pounced on a kick that had ricocheted off a defender before he beat the fullback to score but the Kiwis hit back in the seventh minute when centre Lewis Soosemea crossed in the left-hand corner. New Zealand skipped out to an eight-point lead courtesy of tries to Rory Marshall-Barton and Morgan Harper but with defence flimsy at both ends of the field it wasn't long before the Australians were back in front. Centre Reuben Garrick and half Scott Drinkwater both crossed but the Kiwis again hit back, this time interchange forward Tyrone Nathan crashing over with a powerful carry. The Australian team picked up in the second half how they finished the first with two quick tries that transformed an 18-14 deficit shortly before the break into a 36 - 18 lead 13 minutes into the second half. Fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen backed up through the middle of the field after a long break from Titans winger Tyronne Roberts-Davis and then Jayden Butterfield produced a bullocking run, bumping Kiwi defenders out of the way on his way to a four-pointer left of the posts. The rivalry between Australia and New Zealand was fired up again, but it was Australia that has the upper hand in the two Test Australian Schoolboys v New Zealand Under 18s series, taking the first match, 70 - 24. Australia fought back from an 18-16 deficit towards the end of the first half, before two late tries to Curtis Scott (his first of two) and Adam Keighran gave them a 24-18 lead at halftime. The first half was a tight contest, with both sides showing good attacking intent – with Australian lock Rueben Cotter starting the try-a-thon in an entertaining opening. While the tries continued in the second half; it was one-way traffic with the home side running in eight tries to one. The Australians created damage across the park, leaving the Kiwi’s defence unable to find any answers. Australia’s fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen scored a hat-trick with centre Scott and halfback Scott Drinkwater grabbing doubles in the impressive win. Australian captain Nathan Cleary lead his side from the front, converting seven out of eight goal attempts to add further pain to the visitors’ scoreline. The green and gold side capitalised on every opportunity presented to them, while the Kiwis had limited opportunity with the ball; with errors and poor discipline cruelling any chances they might have had. The Kiwis side was left stunned as the Australian side continued their attack, piling on 54 unanswered points in the second half. Kiwi centre Tarquinn Alatpi tried to create some redemption for his side, scoring a consolation try to close out the match. The Australian side will take their winning momentum into the Second Test this Thursday at BMD Kougari Oval while New Zealand will be hoping to turn their fortunes around. The two-Test series between the Australian Schoolboys and New Zealand Under 18 sides kicks-off on Sunday at Suncorp Stadium as part of Intrust Super Cup grand final day. The international exchanges between Australian Schoolboys and New Zealand 18 Years teams dates back to 1981, when a two-Test series was held in Australia. The Australians, including Ben Elias, Brett Gale and Ricky Walford, won the series 2-0. Test series have been played regularly since, with the most recent played in 2013. That year, the Australian team to play New Zealand included names such as Curtis Sironen, Kane Elgey and a front row rotation of David Klemmer, Jake Trbojevic, Lloyd Perrett and Junior Paulo. In a sign of the competitive nature between to competing nations, most two-Test series in recent times have finished in 1-1 draws. This includes 2005, the most recent time the Kiwis visited Australian shores. In the first Test in Melbourne, the Australians led by Mitchell Pearce, Michael Jennings, David Taylor and Darius Boyd won easily, 42-24. In the return leg at Wynnum though, Greg Eastwood and Issac Luke couldn’t do a thing wrong and New Zealand won 46-8. This year’s Australian team was selected on performances at the Australian Schoolboys Championships in Wollongong in June. Seven players were in the winning New South Wales Combined High Schools squad, while three were in the Cronulla team that won the national club 18 Years title this year. The New Zealand Under 18 side is selected from club football, although a number of players do also play school league and have also featured in the New Zealand Secondary Schools team. Story & Photo By : NZRL NZ Secondary Schools have produced a 26-point second half to run down the visiting New South Wales Combined High Schools 30-22 at Massey Park, Papakura. In a proverbial game of two halves, the young Kiwis overcame a 22-4 deficit to completely turn the tables on their guests, holding them scoreless after the break. The young New Zealand side opened the scoring through a try from winger Michael Siale-Motu on their first possession, but quickly surrendered the advantage through a series of penalties and handling errors. New South Wales ran in four tries – two from powerful centre Mathew Lyons and three of them converted by half Kieran Hayman – before half-time and the home team seemed to need some kind of inspiration just to keep the score-line respectable. Whatever was discussed over oranges did the trick and the use of a gentle southerly also assisted. New Zealand’s comeback began, when hooker David-John Phillips spun over for a try by the posts, converted by skipper Bostyn Hakaraia. Halfback Zae Wallace set up the next try with a darting run near the line, before finding Josh Uta, and Siale-Motu secured his double, when NZ Schools capitalised on a penalty and set play inside NSW territory. All three tries were converted by Hakaraia and suddenly, the scores were locked at 22-22. By this stage, the Kiwis forwards had simply worn their counterparts down and the Australians could not muster an answer to the onslaught up the middle. Winger Siave Tongoiu crossed in the corner to put New Zealand ahead and with time virtually up, Hakaraia found fullback Adam Wetere Pompey cutting back on an angle to seal the deal. NSW Combined High Schools will now travel to Christchurch for a game against Canterbury Combined Schools, while several of the NZ Schools players will pull on the black jersey again next week, when NZ 18s take on the Australian Schools in a two-test series in Brisbane. The final make-up of the side will also hinge on the Junior Warriors’ NYC playoff fortunes this weekend. Three of the national age-group squad – Erin Clark, Ata Hingano and Amoni Tufui – have been named to take on Brisbane Broncos in a sudden-death semi-final. A fourth – Lewis Soosemea – played in the win over Sydney Roosters last week, but drops out of the playing line-up this week. If the Warriors win that rematch of last year’s final, all four could be replaced in the NZ team. For Bostyn Hakaraia, Phoenix Hunt, David Phillips, Chris Sio and Auzzie Tuwhangai, the 18s series will be their second international assignment in quick succession – they are also part of the NZ Schools team to take on New South Wales Combined High Schools next week. Starting Monday, NZ Secondary Schools coach Rod Ratu has a unique opportunity to take a generation of players to the next level of their game. In the space of a couple of weeks, Ratu will guide the students side against New South Wales Combined High Schools, then take the NZ 18s across the ditch to face Australian Schools in Brisbane. Five players – Bostyn Hakaraia, Phoenix Hunt, David-John Phillips, Chris Sio and Auzzie Tuwhangai – have been named for both teams. “I’m apprehensive, I’m nervous … but excited that it’s another challenge,” says Ratu. He’s had plenty of experience at club, rep and schools level, and already knows many of his charges through working with the NZ Warriors development programme. But this is his first national team coaching gig, so he isn’t sure how high the bar sits on this assignment, just that it is higher than he’s been before. “There’s a lot of familiarity there, it’s another campaign and we’re preparing for another game. “At the same time, we’ve got to make sure the effort is raised. We can’t sit comfortably on what we already know, we need to challenge ourselves, off the field, as well as on it.” Ratu has had plenty of advice. At the NZRL National Performance Camp, he picked the brains of new NZRL high performance general manager and former Junior Kiwis coach Brent Gemmell, his predecessor and Warriors assistant coach Tony Iro and Kiwis coach Stephen Kearney. “I took a lot of confidence from that camp, talking to those guys,” says Ratu. “They told me, in these short campaigns, you have to understand what you can manage and keep it simple. “You have to make sure it’s an enjoyable process for yourself and the people concerned … the players.” New South Wales finished stronger than their NZ counterparts in last year’s encounter at Westlake Boys High School, trailing early in the second half, but pulling away 28-16 in the final analysis. Ratu has seen the footage and knows where his team must stamp their authority for a chance to turn the tables this year. “I’m very confident in our middles,” he says. “We are predominantly strong and powerful players, so we’ve selected this side with the intention of winning the battle in the middle of the field. “I expect New South Wales to be highly skilful. They know the game well – they have great game intelligence – and it’s evident they will play the full 80 minutes.” That, effectively, was the difference between the two sides last year, but Ratu is confident his players have the ability to go the distance this time. The process of raising the bar began even before the NZ side entered camp on Friday. The NZ 18s series against Australian Schoolboys will go ahead as planned, after an agreement was reached between the NZRL and NRL today. Hill said it was important for the game that the two-test series went ahead as planned and praised all parties involved for working towards a positive outcome. “It was always our intention to keep working with the NZRL to ensure the New Zealand 18s were able to continue as planned with a two-test series against the Australian Schoolboys,” Hill said. “This is an extremely positive result for the game, enabling Australia's best schoolboy players to test themselves against New Zealand's best under-18s. “These tests have always been an important part of the rugby league calendar and we hope they will continue to be well into the future.” NZRL chief executive Phil Holden said he was delighted with the outcome and was appreciative of the NRL's commitment to resurrecting the series. “It's a great result for rugby league,” Mr Holden said. “This series is an important part of the development pathway for players, coaches and staff from both countries, and we were all disappointed to see the games cancelled. “But this programme will now go ahead as planned to provide our young men with another stepping stone towards professional and international careers.” |

Australian Schoolboys proteges Liam Foran, Kieran Foran and Mitchell Pearce. International rugby league has been dealt a savage blow after the traditional Australian Schoolboys fixture, a showcase of the game's best young talent, has been axed because the New Zealand Rugby League can't afford to send a team over. The first Australian Schoolboys game was played in 1972 and been a regular annual event since 1979, when the green and golds sent a squad to England which included Ben Elias and Andrew Farrar. Since then it has been the best pointer towards whether talented teens make it into first grade, with a plethora of NRL stars over the past four decades coming through the system. Jackson Hastings, Jayden Nikorima and Sione Mata'utia are among the 2013 participants, while David Klemmer, Jake Trbojevic, Junior Paulo and Kane Elgey are just some of the graduates from the class of 2011. The clashes have also been a platform to launch the careers of great Kiwi players, with Issac Luke, Manu Vatuvei and Greg Eastwood starring in a 2005 encounter in Melbourne. The NZRL accepted an invitation from Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League to send across a team to play two matches - at Suncorp Stadium on September 27 and then a second encounter on Kougari Oval, Wynham, on October 2. However, the time-honoured tradition is over after NZRL CEO Phil Holden wrote to ASSRL president Grant Edwards, informing his pupils weren't coming due to financial constraints. The development is an embarrassment for the game, given the NRL has pledged to increase the standing of international fixtures after negotiating the first part of the new broadcast deal. It's a further blow given the proximity to the next World Cup and the fact that the senior Kangaroos won't participate in a senior international during the entire off season. The Australian team was recently named and Edwards had to break the news to the players and their parents in a letter that was also obtained by Fairfax Media. "The Executive of Australian Schoolboys Rugby League wish to apologise to you for lack of information at this stage regarding the Tests we had planned against New Zealand in September and October. "We have received the following advice only recently from the CEO of New Zealand Rugby League. In an email on 5th August, Phil Holden informed me that … It is with deep regret that I need to advise you that New Zealand Rugby League(NZRL) has withdrawn from this year's two test matches with the Australian Schoolboys in Queensland, October 2015. I understand that this news and decision will be devastating for all of those involved, from players to team support and to you personally. I regret this,particularly given the history between us but I have no option.' "This was entirely unexpected, and these circumstances are beyond our control …" The NRL has been trying to find a way resurrect the matches but it's understood the NZRL have been firm in their stance. Attempts to contact the NZRL and Holden were unsuccessful. Edwards said the recent meetings were so close that the two-match series had been split 1-1 for almost two decades. "In his email on August 5 [Holden]he said the NZRL financial position is such that they can no longer participate in the international exchange," Edwards said. "I'm devastated for our boys. I saw them in the dressing sheds after they were picked in the team and the pride they had in being selected for Australia was palpable. You could see in their eyes they were so keen to put that green and gold jersey on and play for Australia. "We're very disappointed for the New Zealand kids who are in the same boat and would have been keen to represent their nation as well." While Australia are the World Cup holders, the Kiwis have sparked a renewed interest in international football by beating the Kangaroos in their past four encounters, including the Four Nations final. The Kiwis are now the top-ranked side in world football, but there are fears their Schoolboys side will now be consigned to history. |

French junior teams have been very strong and competitive over the past few years winning games against both the Australian Schoolboys & visiting AIS teams. | FRANCE VS AUSTRALIA - THE FRENCH GROUP | TRANSLATED BY GOOGLE | The staff of Team France Under-18 (U18) unveiled the list of French youth selected to challenge their Australian counterparts (the Australian Schoolboys) this Thursday, December 18, on the lawn of Arnauné Stade des Minimes. Kick-off at 19h. Despite losing 20-30, the U19 (under 19 years) tricolor held a candle to the Australian Schoolboys Monday (15/12), from left Catalans Dragons lair of the Gilbert Brutus Stadium (summary of the match to regain Dragons on TV, the official channel of the Catalans Dragons). Led by Olympian Valentin YESA, which was the seventh selection as captain and man of the match at the end of the meeting, then the Blues may have inspired the U18 who, before their meeting in Toulouse, now have proof that anything is possible. Indeed, the vast majority of players of that Australian selection are already under contract with a club NRL, accustomed to the best, to what is best in rugby league in that category.  OLIVE HAT TRICK SUCURES AUSSIE WIN IN 1st TEST Story & Photo's By : steve monty / The Australian Schoolboys have won their 1st match on the French leg of their 2014 European Tour with a narrow win in wet and stormy conditions largely thank to Endeavour SHS's John Olive who scored 3 tries in the 20 - 30 scoreline The French kicked off the game at 05:30 local Sydney time. It didnt take long for the Aussie to get into gear in the second half and after only 4 minutes of play, John Olive is in again, Conner Tracey addes 2 points and the score moves nicely to 0 - 22 About 7 minutes later the Tricolours punch back and score through winger Bergal Ilias, Fullback Miloudi Amine has the French kicking duties adds the conversion to bring the score back to 6 - 22 At the 19th minute of the 2nd half in a great move the Tricolours put center Benjamin Jullien in for a try. Story By : Dave Parkinson, Leigh Sports Village ENGLAND ACADEMY 28 AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLBOYS 14 For much of the opening hour of this enthralling Academy international there had been little to choose on the scoreboard between the teams but England defended magnificently to deny wave after wave of Green and Gold attack before back to back tries cemented victory to make it 1-1 in the Academy International Series. In damp conditions, the Australians coughed up possession in their opening set of six. England made them pay with a smart switch down the right which allowed London Broncos Joe Keyes and Leeds Ash Golding to hold up the defence for fellow Rhino Ash Handley to finish. Hull halfback Jordan Abdull stepped up to convert from a tight angle and the men in red were underway – 6-0. It was a good start for England. Handley surged down the right again on a thirty metre break to take England close and when Robbie Ward kicked a 40-20 two minutes later, it looked like it could get even better but Toby King was gang tackled into touch while a further opportunity saw the Warrington centre drift down the left only to see his pass fly into touch. Australia seized on their chance and took a stranglehold on the game with deep kicking from Brock Lamb and Jack Cogger combined with brilliant defence that pinned England inside their own half. England battled gamely through this period with Widnes forward Ted Chapelhow a colossus in the middle of the field but it was the Schoolboys that scored when Lamb worked an offload on the left and Latrell Mitchell grounded for his eighth tour try. Lamb screwed his kick wide and England were finally allowed out of their half. Warrington wing Jack Johnson was held up over the line and just when it looked like Australia had repelled the danger, Keyes sent a kick to the right corner where Jack Logan took the catch to claim a simple looking try. Once more Australia hit straight back when Lamb again created an opportunity and Ash Nisbet scored. Despite being closer to the posts, Lamb again pulled his conversion attempt wide.
England responded to the concession of points with a spell of pressure after the restart kick bobbled dangerously and was played at by Tyrell Fuimano from an offside position. This led to crisp distribution from Luke Waterworth and Abdull was held up over the line. The crunching tackles continued to the break with Logan somehow avoiding a king hit between substitutes Jacob Host and Keegan Hipgrave that left Hipgrave out of action. This gave England a short respite at a time when the likes of Chapelhow, Dickinson and Will Maher weren’t making much ground, but they held their nerve and the advantage at half-time by 10-8. From the start of the second half Australia attacked with more vigour despite a forty metre surge from England substitute Mikey Wood but scrambling defence kept them at bay with Keenan Yorston and Nisbet going close. Lamb threaded a kick to the ingoal area and Ash Golding put his body on the line to make sure the ball was dead before being clattered into the advertising board. Thankfully from England’s point of view, the outstanding fullback was able to get up and shrug off the knock to play an important role in the second half. A typical lion-hearted run from the fullback brought a penalty for the hosts and after soaking up a couple of tackles the schoolboys defence cracked and Abdull got the ball left for skipper Jansin Turgut to touchdown amid a host of bodies. Abdull goaled and England led 16-8. Tom Amone and Hame Sele were sent back on for the Australians and began to create momentum. Mitchell was denied at the corner but the Schoolboys kept going and Ray Stone was rewarded for a quick play-the-ball by substitute Jacob Liddle who scampered for the posts and the green and golds third try. Lamb converted to bring it back to a two point game and just as the visitors looked set to move on, Warrington wing Jack Johnson came up with a timely intercept and thirty metre carry. That and a great chase by Golding to force Gideon Gela to kick after the Australian had ran sixty metres helped to turn the tide into the last quarter and belief and confidence began to flow through English veins. Sensing that the Australians were there for the taking, England Academy brought the ball down the left through Golding and King. On the last tackle Abdull spiralled a bomb to the nights sky. King chased through only to be obstructed by Gela, but the ball bounced in England’s favour and Turgut beat two despairing tacklers before dabbing a low kick behind the goal line for Ward to score. Abdull converted and with eighteen minutes left, the men in red were 22-14 up. Australia did fashion another chance on the back of some accurate passing but King stood up well to opposite centre Braden Robson. Eight minutes from time, England delivered the knock out blow with King combining with Johnson on the left, and he stepped off his wing to finish superbly. This sparked an angry confrontation ingoal which led to Ward and Amone being sinbinned but England kept their discipline and nerve thereafter to claim the spoils. “They were just too good on the night.” Australian Schoolboys boss Brian Batesse conceded. “There were times in the second half, we got it back to two points and we had a lot of field position. Had we been able to take our opportunities, maybe it’s a different game, but they defended magnificently during that period; held us out; and then they were able to get the next try which lifted them.” “A couple of times people took options trying to win the game themselves. That’s something that kids have got to learn. At lower levels you go out and win games, but it gets harder the further you go.” “I made a point of going to Ash Golding at the end. For me he was player of the series. I wished him all the best and I think we’ll be hearing more from him.” The win pleased England Academy coach Richard Marshall. “I think the boys dug in and worked really hard, reflected on the week and on missed opportunities last week. That wasn’t the case this week. I thought we were tough, I thought we were strong. It was a tough resolute English performance. They played for each other. If someone missed a tackle there was someone covering from the inside.” “Our ball control was better, even though the conditions didn’t suit free-flowing rugby league but that said, I thought we exploited that and played the conditions really well. I was impressed with our discipline. Our standards and values were good and we executed our plays a lot better. Jordan Abdull was a constant threat on that left side and you look at Sam Wilde who has come out of nowhere, he had a really good impact for us and there was Jansin Turgut our captain, his workrate was outstanding in a team performance.” |

England Academy 28 England Academy secured a memorable victory over the Australian Schoolboys at Leigh Sports Village, ensuring that they shared the two-Test 2014 Autumn International Academy Series. The fiery encounter in Leigh ended with both sides stood arm-in-arm when presented the shared honours, though it was the home side that were the happiest after beating an old foe for the first time since 2010. “That was a great response,” said Richard Marshall, after completing his first series as England Academy coach. “We were bitterly disappointed last week and this week we are the complete opposite – we are ecstatic. “The boys got what they deserved, they worked really well this week and put in a strong performance for 80 minutes. “They scored some really nice tries as well. The conditions were appalling, it didn’t help either team, but I think our guys defended resolutely and really worked hard for the victory.” A bitterly cold night in Leigh was not the place to put in a lukewarm performance for an England side looking to bounce back from defeat six days prior. Perhaps buoyed by the presence of James Graham in the stands – the senior international presented match shirts to the players the day before – it was just as well that the hosts came out in red-hot form. England needed only 75 seconds to register the game’s first try. Gifted a penalty ten metres from the Australian line, the Academy worked the game’s first set right through full-back Ash Golding, who found Ash Handley ready to take advantage of a small opening. In England’s very next possession, Jack Logan showed strength to gain ground down the right wing, offloading smartly to Handley who cut inside to stride 30 metres before being brought down. Jordan Abdul’s grubber eventually bobbled long, but England’s early attacking intentions were clear. Australia’s attacking threat was, as in the first game in this series, ever-present. Latrell Mitchell’s explosive power from full-back helped the Schoolboys gobble tens of metres per set, and on a number of occasions England relied on the sharp eye of man-of-the-match Golding to cut out Brock Lamb’s probing kicks. The Schoolboys managed their own try within 20 minutes. Having elected to run a penalty 15 metres from England’s line, the Academy looked to have survived an onslaught from Ray Stone and then the equally-large Ash Nisbet, however Mitchell’s eventual inclusion in the attack proved one powerhouse too many for England, as the Sydney City Roosters man burst through to just about make the line. From a similar position Nisbet went over on half an hour but Newcastle Knights player Lamb, finding it difficult in the blustery Lancastrian conditions, dragged his second conversion in succession wide of the sticks. That kick could have brought the tourists level going into half time, for England had already registered their second try of the night. Joe Keyes’s kick to the right corner was met by Hull FC’s Logan who, unchallenged, plucked from the air to touch down. Abdul couldn’t add to his earlier conversion, shaving the post from a difficult touch-line kick. The swirling sleet relented for the start of the second period but, for large parts of the second half, the Schoolboys’ attacks didn’t. Huddersfield Giants’ Mikey Wood did break through to gain nearly 40 metres, only for Mitchell to retrieve and make 20 of those straight back. Jacob Liddle was able to dive in under the sticks – a score easily converted by Lamb – after good work from Stone in the build-up, and they would have had another soon after had Gideon Gela not run out of steam in a length-of-the-field break – Golding again came to the rescue for the Academy. Only fleetingly were red shirts able to advance but, firstly through Jansin Turgut, England made their attacks count. Golding, lucky to still be on the field after a heavy collision with an advertising hoarding, made ground towards the left, winning the penalty from which captain Turgut was able to capitalise on. A second foray forward resulted in a fourth try for the home side, albeit via an ounce of confusion. After Ted Chapelow was tripped chasing a high bomb, referee Tom Grant allowed play to continue and from the ensuing mêlée Leeds Rhinos’ Robbie Ward pounced. The momentum was now with the home team, and again England found themselves ten metres out, in front of the tourists’ posts. They worked the ball left through Abdul, then Toby King, before Jack Johnson found himself in possession in the corner. With three green and gold shirts bearing down, he skipped back inside, selling all markers the dummy, to dart over and seal a memorable win for England. Ward and Australia’s Tom Amone each saw yellow for their parts in a brief brawl in the aftermath of England’s winning try, though the performance of referee Grant and his officials – all of the same academy age as the players – must be commended for keeping control of a match which, a number of times, threatened to boil over. Test matches are definitely back on the agenda for the Australian Schoolboys who hung on to claim victory and just finish ahead of a spirited second half from their hosts. Guided superbly by man-of-the-match halfback Brock Lamb, with decent support from Lattrell Mitchell, John Cogger, Jayden Brailey, Hame Sele, Ash Nisbet and Nat Butcher, the Green and Golds did enough to win ahead of a largely forgettable final quarter. The opening exchanges were typically fierce as the two packs wrestled for control. England starting props Will Maher and Tyler Dickinson were in everything while Hame Sele enhanced his already growing reputation with some thundering drives alongside Tom Amone while Ash Nisbet was a constant threat on the left. After pinning the Australians back in their own half, a good kick-chase restricted England and Ash Golding was forced to concede a drop out. With Brock Lamb and Jack Cogger continuing their club partnership on the international stage, the ball fizzed quickly right and the superb Latrell Mitchell swept past a defender and handed on for Gideon Gela before a timely intervention from Callum Lancaster saved a try. London Broncos scrum half Joe Keyes cleared the danger with a raking kick but it wasn’t long before the Australians were flooding forward again through Nat Butcher and the versatile Tyrell Fuimaono. England fashioned their first chance after seven minutes when Jordan Abdul made a half break on the left and got his arms free for Nick Gregson and Oliver Gildart to combine. Lancaster unfortunately spilled the pass and the chance was lost. Robbie Ward then conceded a penalty and this gave the Schoolboys a perfect chance to push forward. They took full advantage with Tevita Cottrell bowling his way past two players on the left corner after Mitchell created the extra man in attack. Lamb missed the conversion but it was one of the few things that went wrong for the star halfback. Both teams went at each other again before a mistake from Gela handed another chance to England. Quick play from the scrum base and a no-look pass from Gildart created an opening for Lancaster but the Aussies chased back to deny the Hull winger. Golding defused a towering bomb for England and they created another opportunity through middle but as the ball went loose from Jansin Turgut, Mitchell collected and hardly broke stride nor sweat to gallop ninety metres under the opposing posts for Lamb to hit his first goal and make it 10-0. England lost Gregson to injury but forced a drop-out. They then came up with a try of their own after 31 minutes when Keyes accurately found Toby King. He in turn raced around Cottrell and supporting second row Oliver Davies scored. Jordan Abdul missed the conversion and this seemed to stir the Australians in to action. Jayden Brailey won a penalty from dummy half and the Schoolboys didn’t look back. Although Lamb was stopped under the England posts; a quick switch right from Cogger saw fullback Mitchell show both strength and footwork to get his second try of the game after 37 minutes. Lamb again goaled and England scrambled well in the closing stages of the half as Australia threatened to over-run them. The second half started in similar fashion, but this time it was the red shirts of England that went close. Ash Golding racing through the middle before being cut down and his pass wide was not taken cleanly. Spotting a weakness on the Australians right, England concentrated their effort and when Abdul chipped to the corner for Lancaster to chase; Gela palmed the ball back, straight into the path of Oliver Gildart for the Wigan centre to profit. Keyes missed the conversion but England were back within touching distance after 47 minutes. Abdul launched the left edge again a couple of minutes later with Golding supporting Lancaster for what he felt was a try, but the touch judge ruled a forward pass and the chance was lost. Connor Cox then rose highest to claim a Lamb cross-kick at the other end, but a superb tackle from Davies prevented him from scoring. Another crunching tackle from Davies stopped Butcher in his tracks and although England met the challenge head on with excellent defence; Australia toughed this period out. England then fumbled, and the Schoolboys were clinical. Lamb angled a kick behind the line and Fuimaono dived through to score. The stand-off then landed the touchline conversion to stretch Australia’s advantage to 22-8 after 59 minutes. The last twenty was where things started to go wrong and England responded gamely. A tricky kick downfield from Turgut helped to turn the tide but King could not take the ball cleanly. Another chance went begging for England after Australia were guilty of dropping the ball but Lancaster was tackled into touch for the third time in the game after Gildart gave him an impossible pass. At the other end tenacious defence stopped Amone when he looked set to score for the Aussies. England stuck to their guns and persistence paid off ten minutes from time when Abdul sliced through from close range. Keyes missed the conversion but a couple of late penalties again gave England territory and they struck before full-time for a fourth time when Gildart swept over for a deserved second try. This time Abdul converted to make it 18-22 but it was too little too late for England. |

England Academy 18 Ultimately, just two kicks separated England Academy and the Australian Schoolboys in the first match of the 2014 Autumn International Academy Series. In a fiercely-fought and physical encounter, both sides recorded four tries, with a player from each team scoring a brace – Oliver Gildart crossed twice for the Academy whilst Latrell Mitchell grabbed two first-half scores for the Schoolboys – though it was the visitors, converting three tries to England’s one, who were ultimately victorious. Coach Richard Marshall, taking charge of England Academy for the first time, spoke in the build-up to the game of the importance for his players to put in a strong defensive performance against a powerful Australian squad which had already racked up 160 points in three tour matches. He got exactly that, as England stood firm for large periods of the match despite some forceful attacking by the Schoolboys. “It was a strong Test match,” said Marshall. “Obviously I was impressed with the Australian team but I was impressed with our guys as well. I thought Australia dominated the first half but in the second half we really came out strong. “The speed of the Australians caught us a bit cold. That was our first hit out and they have had a few games prior to this match. That said, I thought defensively we were strong, we defended with some vigour and got stuck in. From a coaching point of view I was pleased with that.” The schoolboys came out of the blocks aggressively and would have had the early score they were looking for through Mitchell had he not strayed into touch before crossing the line. However, from their next attack, the visitors got what they were looking for. A neat move saw the Schoolboys work the ball left to Tevita Cottrell who, despite having a man available on the overlap, took on his marker and bundled his way over the whitewash. They should have had another soon after when Ash Nisbet broke through the red-shirted England defence. He passed to Cottrell who again opted to take on his man despite the availability of an unmarked overlapping teammate, though this time England recovered. After these early threats, England’s defence settled into a defensive solidity and were working their way into the match – looking dangerous 15 metres from the Schoolboys’ line – when Mitchell intercepted and showed immense speed and power to run in a near length-of-the-field try. The Sydney City Roosters player scored his second right on half-time, using all of his strength to hold off numerous red shirts and stretch out an arm beyond the whitewash. It followed what was England’s best spell of the match thus far – a dominant period spent deep in Australian territory which eventually saw Toby King, the Warrington Wolves centre, break through on the right flank, and offload to Oliver Davies to cross the line. With the temperature hovering around freezing, England sparked into life early in the second half. Full-back Ash Golding saw a gap and scurried through the Schoolboys’ defence on halfway though 20 metres from the line, surrounded by backtracking green and gold shirts, his pass was intercepted. However, just minutes later came a piece of luck to warm the hearts of the 1,583 fans inside the stadium as Gildart, from nothing, pounced on a loose ball inside the Australian ten to go over. It reawakened the aggressive Australians, who instantly looked to respond. The tourists recorded their fourth try as Brock Lamb slid the ball through England’s defence for Tyrell Fuiaomano to acrobatically touch down, though England were not to surrender – from a penalty deep in Australian territory, stand-off Jordan Abdul saw a gap to power through for England’s third try of the afternoon. It marked a period of dominance for England as through consecutive sets the Academy camped themselves ten metres from Australia’s line. The pressure eventually told as Gildart went over for his second of the night, England’s fourth, and despite England’s change kicker Abdul converting for the first time with the game’s last kick, the Academy’s second-half fight-back fell short. “The guys are disappointed,” said coach Marshall. “They aren’t devastated, but they are disappointed and there are a few things there that we are looking to improve. “We need to get a bit smarter with ball in hand, to build a little bit more pressure, and if we put the game to Australia then the second Test will be a little bit different.” |

England Academy coach Richard Marshall is happy with the way his squad have come together this week and is preparing them for a physical battle against the Australian Schoolboys on Saturday at Leigh Sports Village (2.00pm). The Schoolboys have already played warm-up games against an England Regional Academies team, Wigan Warriors Academy and Leeds Rhinos Academy and go into the first test with a 100 per cent record. “I attended the Wigan and Leeds games. They were very lively and I thought the home sides made a good fist of it,” said Marshall. “We will be keeping an eye on what they might throw at us down the middle. They also have some dangerous players in the outside backs that will need taking care of too. “It’s important that we defend strongly. If they want to score then we’re going to make it very difficult for them.” This is the squad’s first week in camp and Marshall is pleased with the way the players have bonded and taken to his style of play. He has seen some promising young talent in training and firmly believes they are on the right path to represent the first team in the future. “The mood in camp is fantastic and we are starting to build on each other’s trust and honesty as the days go on,” said Marshall. “There is a natural pathway for these players to progress on to the England Knights, then the Elite Training Squad and then hopefully make their debut for the England senior team. This path has been trodden and proven. “We’re looking forward to the challenge against the Australian Schoolboys and I think it’ll be a great atmosphere at Leigh. In a memorable night at Headingley Carnegie the Rhinos U19 Academy took on the touring Australian Schoolboys side in their final game of the season. The Australians looked to make an impact from the start but the young Rhinos defended well in the opening five minutes and did enough to keep their opponents from scoring. The home side then almost got the first try of the fane as Ashton Golding powered trough but was just held up short of the line. The visitors broke the deadlock on ten minutes through a Jacob Liddle try which Connor Tracey converted and following this they hit a dominant spell as they ran in three more tries to race out 22-0 in front. First John Olive crossed for the Australians before Keenan Yorston and Gideon Gela got another two. After half an hour played the Rhinos showed their character to turn the one way tide and were able to force their opponents to make some errors, but they were unable to make the most of their chances. Both teams were reduced to twelve men when tempers boiled over late in the first half which led to yellow cards for Elliot Minchella and Tyrell Fuiamaono. Soon after though the Rhinos grabbed their first try of the game after Jordan Lilley's high kick was knocked down to Ashton Golding and the full back raced over next to the posts. Lilley added the conversion to bring the score to 6-22. The Australians responded immediately to end the half on a high when ?/ broke from half way and offloaded to Nat Butcher who was able to go over unopposed. Once again Tracey converted to stretch his side's lead to 28-6. The Rhinos made a positive start to the second period when Ben Frankland collected a great pass from Rob Mulhern and Lilley converted to bring his side back in the game at 12-28. The impressive Lilley then sent Tommy Brierley over for another try and then converted to bring the Rhinos closer at 18-28. The Rhinos continued to press for another opening and came close but a forward pass denied Chris Plume's side. The Australian Schoolboys made the Rhinos pay for this lost chance when Latrell Mitchell went over. With time running out the Rhinos were able to claim a deserved try when good work from Frankland and Thomas Minns set up Josh Walters and Lilley converted to bring the final score to 24-38. |

Leeds Rhinos' Academy team will look to create history when they take on the Australian Schoolboys at Headingley Carnegie on Tuesday 2nd December, kick off 7pm. The Rhinos, who will be captained by hooker Robbie Ward, who made his Super League debut in 2014, are looking to defeat the tourists for the first time. The team will include Mason Tonks and Jordan Baldwinson who returned to the club this season having played with New Zealand Warriors and Bradford Bulls last season and will join Featherstone Rovers in 2015. All the players involved qualified to play in the Under 19 competition in 2014 and this game will bring the curtain down on the 2014 campaign for the Academy season. The side includes nine players who have played in Super League whilst Robbie Mulhern played for Ireland this Autumn in the European Nations Cup. The home side will also include all four of their England Academy players, who will be part of the national squad that takes on the Australians in a two game series at Leigh Sporting Village over the next two weekends. Skipper Ward along with Elliot Minchella, full back Ashton Golding and winger Ash Handley all get the chance to have an early look at the tourists. Commenting on the clash, Liam Sutcliffe said, "Any time you get to play against an Australian touring side is a massive honour and we are looking forward to the game. In their entire history, they have not lost many games, probably only a handful, so we will be looking to create our own piece of history as an Under 19s team. Quite a number of us have gone on to play in Super League but it will be great as a group to finish our Academy time together with such a prestigious game. I hope all the Rhinos fans can turn out to see the game plus the chance for all Rugby League fans to see the future stars of the Australian game is a great opportunity too." Fresh from an 86-6 defeat of the Combined Regional Academies in Workington on Wednesday night, a twenty man squad was again named by Australian Schoolboys Coach Brian Batesse for this game against Academy champions Wigan Warriors at the Solid Strip Community Stadium in Orrell. Gideon Gela, Ashleigh Nisbet, Connor Tracey and Tom Amone were all rested with Connor Cox, Troy Dragan, Ray Stone and Darryn Schonig all coming in to good effect. This was a tough game with the hosts losing four of their starting players due to injury over the course of the encounter; and more from their replacement bench. Early on, a landside victory looked assured for the Australians as they laid siege to the hosts try line and forced a couple of back-to-back sets on the back of intelligent kicking from halfback Brock Lamb on the back of forceful runs from the likes of prop Jacob Host and second rows Luciano Leilua and Tyrell Fuiamaono. There was little surprise when Australia opened the scoring after eight minutes when soft hands down the left saw centre Keenan Yorston release for Connor Cox to dive in at the corner. Lamb converted superbly to hand the tourists a 6-0 advantage. Despite looking the more organised, direct and lively on the ball with Latrell Mitchell an attacking presence, the Australians could not add to their lead and Wigan responded brilliantly when Jamie Doran jinked past four players in a twenty metre individual try by the posts, leaving halfback partner Jake Shorrocks the chance to strike the first of three goals. A penalty and forty-twenty kick saw Wigan pile on the pressure and Doran turned provider, kicking low for centre Oliver Gildart to pounce for a second home try after 24 minutes. Again Shorrocks goaled. Wigan then lost a couple of players to injury but continued to get the ball wide with good defence twice denying Liam Marshall before the winger limped off. His replacement Josh Woods added a third Wigan try in the 33rd minute after Lewis Tierney and Gildart created space but he too was forced to leave the field. That try went unconverted but a fourth penalty to the hosts saw Shorrocks take the two points and ensure an 18-6 advantage over the tourists. The second half saw Australia emerge with a different mindset and good defence twice denied the Junior Kangaroos with Braden Robson ganged into touch and Doran somehow held up an on-rushing Ray Stone after Leilua was similarly denied on the left. Eventually Australia found a way through when Mitchell packed down on a scrum ten metres from the Warriors line before scooping up and picking his way through for Lamb to narrow the deficit at 18-12. An all-in brawl twenty minutes from time breathed new life into the contest. Tevita Cottrell (Australia) and Macauley Davies (Wigan) were given their marching orders while Jacob Liddle who was at the centre of the initial furore was sinbinned. Knowing that Wigan had lost another forward, the Schoolboys pushed forward through the middle with renewed vigour. Replacements Oliver Clark and Hame Sele set the platform with Nat Butcher not far behind. This tactic succeeded in drawing the defence in and a quick switch down the left saw the classy Mitchell release at the right second for Yorston to go in and improve the angle for another successful Lamb conversion. The Warriors lost another replacement in Jack Wells and the Aussies powered their way upfield for Butcher to plough under the posts for their fourth try to put the visitors in front for the first time after 64 minutes. Trailing by six points, Wigan hit the afterburner on attack with Gildart haring down the wing only for a magnificent cover tackle by Mitchell to deny the hosts. Three minutes later the tourists went down the ground again after Sele won the ball in a one-on-one steal for the ball to go left once more for Yorston to go in from Dragan’s floated pass. Result from the Solid Strip Community Stadium - 12.15pm kick off Match Report Wigan Warriors Academy went down 36-18 to the Australian Schoolboys this afternoon in a pulsating game at the Solid Strip Community Stadium. Roared on by the hugely vociferous home crowd, tries from Jamie Doran, Oliver Gildart and Josh Woods plus three goals from Jake Shorrocks gave the Warriors a well-deserved 18-6 lead, but the tourists roared back and eventually won 36-18 as injuries took their toll for the Warriors. Matty Peet was boosted by having his four England Academy players available, Peet named as strong a side as possible with Lewis Tierney, Jamie Doran and Ryan Sutton all starting. The game began in brutal fashion with numerous big hits being put in by both sides, and penalties being swapped. Despite inspired Warriors defending from a drop out, it was the tourists who scored first in the 10th minute with Connor Cox touching down in the corner on the last tackle, Brock Lamb converted to make it 6-0. Wigan, wearing their new Academy Kit for the first time, fought back as great defence forced an Australian knock on, and Jamie Doran brilliantly weaved his way through the visitors rear guard to score under the posts. Jake Shorrocks added the extras to level the game at 6-6 in the 21st minute. The momentum was with Wigan now and after a fantastic Jamie Doran 40 / 20 kick gave them field position, Oliver Gildart grounded an equally great Doran grubber kick in the 26th minute to give the home side the lead. The Solid Strip Community Stadium was bouncing now and Jake Shorrocks converted again to make it 12-6. The Cherry and Whites then broke away on the left hand side eventually forcing the tourists to knock on; this territory was exploited by the Warriors as Josh Woods slid in to score with his first touch in the corner following a great passing move. Shorrocks was unsuccessful with the difficult conversion so it stayed 16-6 with five left to half time. A late tackle by the visitors in the 38th minute gave Wigan a penalty deep in the Australian half; Jake Shorrocks kicked the points to make it 18-6 at the interval. The Australians thundered out of the blocks after the break and it was more amazing Warriors defending to keep them scoreless for a quarter of an hour. However the pressure eventually told with Latrell Mitchell running in under the posts in the 56th minute, Brock Lamb converted to make it 18-12. Minutes after the score, tempers flared between both teams with a brawl breaking out in the middle of the pitch, meaning Tevita Cottrell and MacCauley Davies were sent off, with Jacob Liddle also sin binned for Australia. After the game restarted, the tourists were again next on the score sheet with Keenan Yorston touching down after a flowing passing move on the left hand side. Lamb again added the extras to make it level once more at 18-18 to ensure a gripping last 17 minutes. The visitors then took the lead with Nat Butcher barging over and Lamb again converting to make it 24-18. This lead was extended with Connor Cox grabbing his second try of the game in the corner, and Lamb's brilliant conversion made it 30-18 with the game into its last ten minutes. Tyrell Fuiamaono then ran twenty metres to touch down for the final time for the Australians with Lamb adding his fifth conversion making the final score 36-18 to the visitors. The final whistle signalled a standing ovation for both sides from the incredible support at the Solid Strip Community Stadium, thus showing Wigan is a truly special Rugby League Town. |

Wigan Warriors Under 19's Head Coach Matty Peet has said his side are privileged to face the Australian Schoolboys as he prepares his team for this Saturday's game (12pm). Ahead of the eagerly anticipated clash of academy players from both sides of the World, Peet commented: The Grand Final winning Coach was quick to cite the Warriors equally rich tradition saying: "Our Club also has a fantastic history. I have shown my team videos of the amazing World Club Challenge wins, so they know what representing Wigan means. "Although Saturday will be a huge challenge, I think it is about our performance, there are certain levels expected when pulling on a Wigan shirt, and my players know they need to do themselves justice. The Academy side will don their new Academy Kit for the first time, a new idea that will see the Academy team wear a different strip to that of the First Team. The Australian Schoolboys kicked off their tour of England and France with a comprehensive victory over the England Combined Regional Academies at Derwent Park, Workington on Wednesday evening. Leeds Rhinos U19s will take on the Australian Schoolboys at Headingley Carnegie on Tuesday 2nd December, kick off 7.30pm. Entrance is a £2 donation with the Main Stand only open. Sydney Roosters centre Latrell Mitchell picked up a hat-trick of tries to add to a brace of tries each from Brock Lamb (Newcastle Knights) and Tevita Cottrell (South Sydney Rabbitohs). Nine other Australian players got on the scoresheet with Workington Town full-back Theerapol Ritson scoring the Academy team's only try of the evening. Despite the defeat, Combined Regional Academies coach Dave Clark said there were plenty of positives to take out of the game which saw the North West, North East and Midlands Academies combine for an historic fixture. "I can't fault the boys at all," said Clark. "There were a lot of positives. We had two great camps and they gave their best. "There were no heads down and no fault in effort at all. Our bench players wanted to get back on the field, which was pleasing to see. "They could have easily sit down and not bothered, so it shows the character of the players and they were really keen to get out there and have this experience. "Our two props were 17-years-old, we had players from the Midlands and North East which are regions which are not famous for Rugby League. "But this is what the regional Academies are all about. It's a big achievement for them. We are reaching our targets with players going on to play at a higher level. "It's something the players will never forget, it was a great opportunity for them to play against the Australian kids. "And it's a great reward for the three regions to come together and make history playing a game against a touring side." Australia took an early lead 6-0 lead through Lamb before Ritson replied as he was fastest to react to his own grubber kick on the last tackle. The Academies faced a major setback as captain Brandon Moore of Castleford Tigers was forced off with an ankle injury after just four minutes and any momentum the home side wanted to build on was short-lived as Australia scored quick-fire tries to go ahead once more. Cottrell scored twice with Jayden Brailey, Jack Cogger, Mitchell and John Olive adding to their tally to make it 38-6 at half-time. Hame Sele scored in the first few minutes of the second half as the Schoolboys limited any opportunities for the Academies to gain any sort of foothold. Lamb picked up his second of the evening and this was quickly followed by Mitchell's second and third tries as the centre completed his hat-trick. Substitute Jacob Liddle, full-back Gideon Gela, Keegan Yorston, Joe Hambley and Nat Butcher each added tries to cap what was a dominant Schoolboys display. The Schoolboys will face Wigan Warriors Academy on Saturday November 29 at Solid Strip Community Stadium, Wigan, and Leeds Rhinos Academy at Headingley Stadium, Leeds on Tuesday December 2. They will then play England's Academy in two Test fixtures at Leigh Sports Village, Leigh on Saturday December 6 and Friday December 12 before travelling to France to play two fixtures to end their tour.

TOP TALENT ON DISPLAY AT DERWENT PARK England Combined Regional Academy have named an 18-man squad for the opening match of the Australian Schoolboys' tour at Derwent Park, Workington on Wednesday November 26 (6.30pm). The England squad is drawn from players involved with the RFL's three regional Academies in Cumbria, the North East and the Midlands, many of whom have already secured contracts with First Utility Super League, Kingstone Press Championship and League 1 clubs. "The lads have completed two intensive weekend training camps in Sheffield ahead of this game," said Clark. "The camps were tough and the lads handled it well. "The players are ready and now it's time to test ourselves against some of Australia's most promising young talent. Leeds Rhinos Head of Youth Development Simon Bell believes the 2015 Academy squad will be well positioned for the new campaign as they look to challenge their rivals from across the Pennines. The Rhinos U19s will take on the Australian Secondary Schools on Tuesday 2nd December, kick off 7pm, at Headingley Carnegie as they continue their preparations for the new season and Bell believes the experience gained last year by Chris Plume's U19 side will stand them in good stead. Looking ahead to that clash, which is the only time that Yorkshire based fans will get to see the touring side, Bell commented, "The game against the Australian High Schools will be a great test for us and a good benchmark for the progress we are making in pre-season. When you look at the history of the Australian Schoolboys sides, some of the great names of our game have played for that team down the years. The current squad includes the younger brother of current Kangaroo Michael Jennings and the son of former prop Paul Sironen. "The Rhinos Academy players have been training hard in pre-season under the guidance of Dr Ben Jones and we have been able to double the amount of contact time we have with them. We have put in place extra training early in the morning and on the evenings and they have responded well. With the possible addition of first team squad members like Liam Sutcliffe, Jordan Baldwinson and Mason Tonks amongst others, we are excited about the prospect of taking on the Australians," added Bell. Chris Plume's U19 side have produced some notable wins over the last few years against their rivals from the other side of the Pennines however it has been Wigan, Warrington and St Helens who have taken the honours in recent seasons at Academy level. Bell is clear that progression in the senior ranks is the priority at junior level for Leeds however he believes the 2015 squad will be able to challenge as well. He added, "Last year we had six players graduate to the first team which is a great barometer for how our development programme is going. We have also been able to help those who have not been retained for next year to find a path to continue their development. Brad England has gone to Salford, Ben White to Swinton, Jordan Harper to Featherstone and Matty Stableford is on trial at Bradford whilst Dan Grange has opted to return to Rugby Union and is combining that with his studies at Leeds Beckett University. "The average age of our matchday squad last season was 17.6 and we will probably be under 18 once again this year. However, there is an exciting mix of players in our Academy squad next season made up of eight U17 players, 12 U18 players and just five U19 players. Rob Burrow and Carl Ablett, who coached last season's Under 16s side speak highly of the prospects for those lads going forward plus we are always keen to give players who missed out originally on the scholarship pathway in the game the chance to show they can make it. Jack Norfolk is a great example of that. As a youngster he was on Salford's Scholarship but he is a Leeds lad and we spotted him playing for East Leeds U17s last season. He came in at the back end of the year and made such an impression that he earned a contract for next season," added Bell. Bell also confirmed that the U19s will play home and away games against Catalans Dragons next season having travelled to France last season on a pre-season trip and found the experience beneficial for player development. The games are likely to be curtain raisers to the coinciding Super League matches between the sides. |

Story By : Engalnd RL England have named a 20-man squad to face the Australian Schoolboys in a two-game Autumn Academy International Series at Leigh Sports Village in December. Eight Super League clubs are represented in the squad, which features four players from Wigan Warriors, four from Leeds Rhinos, three from Hull FC, three from Warrington Wolves, three from Huddersfield and one apiece from London Broncos, Widnes Vikings and St Helens. England Academy coach Richard Marshall says some tough decisions were made when agreeing on the final 20 and is pleased to see so many clubs represented in the final squad. “All coaches involved made the decision on the squad with an eye on the opposition and what we needed to compete against them,” said Marshall. “Several players included were from outside of the initial 40-man squad, most notably Joe Keyes, Jordan Abdull, Liam Johnson and Sam Wilde. Their form and in some cases first team representation warranted inclusion. “Players were selected from all over the country and it's encouraging that so many different academies are included within the group. “It's our job to get them playing as a team and supporting each other throughout our camp. Ultimately our goal is for the players to push on to the Knights programme and then on to full representative honours.” Marshall is expecting a physical test against the Australian Schoolboys in December but will be mainly looking at how the England squad comes together in camp and how they prepare themselves for the International Series. “We expect them to be strong, professional and talented,” said the England Academy coach. “We will be concentrating more on the England boys and how they handle being in camp and playing for their country. It's a massive honour to play for your country and we hope they embrace this and enjoy the experience. “We'll come together in November to have good look at the players. Anyone who performs well in practice and shows passion, leadership and desire will be in with a good shout of making that final 17-man squad. “We're looking forward to the Autumn Academy International Series and at a time during the off-season when very few competitive games are being played we hope to get a passionate English crowd behind us.” The Australian Schoolboys will begin their campaign on Wednesday November 26 (6.30pm) against a Combined Regional Select squad at Derwent Park, Workington, Cumbria. ASSRL face NZ Residents 18s haka at Toll Stadium, Whangarei Sept 30, 2013 Northland rugby league fans turned out in their hundreds to enjoy a great day's entertainment at Toll Stadium, Whangarei. First up was the Youth Event, hosted by NZRL / NRL Wellbeing and Education manager Joe Harawira. Along with local rugby league star Elijah Taylor, Harawira was joined by staff from Northtec, the NZ Fire Service, the NZ Defence Force and the NZ Police. After Taylor talked to the young people about the challenges he faced growing up and in his league career, the organisations gave short presentations about what their organisations had to offer now and in the future, then everyone got to test their strength, rowing skills, ability to carry a fire service dummy and did a fun and interesting Police test. Then it was on to the footy and despite rain squalls and strong winds forcing the youth event inside, a good crowd had gathered, waiting for gates to open. As is often the way, once the league got underway the skies cleared and both games were played in reasonable conditions. Initially the NZ Residents 16s (16s) and the Queensland Academy (QA) match was a stop start affair punctuated by dropped balls, scrums and penalties. First to score were the 16s after a high kick bounced around in goal then the QA scored under the posts and it was 6-all at half time. In the second half both teams tightened up their play and there was some punishing defense from each. The 16s scored first after the break, and it was a see-sawing affair, until eventually QA scored two further two tries and the final score was 26 - 18 to the Queenslanders. NZ Residents 18s (18s) and Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League (ASSRL) started in a similar fashion with the 18s scoring first, then ASSRL scoring two unconverted tries, before they had what appeared to be a third and certain try over-turned after the referee disallowed it for a shepherd. The 18s took advantage of the shift in momentum to lead 16 - 8 at half time. The second half was a tough battle with no quarter given by either side and the 18s pushing their Australian rivals backwards in some uncompromising tackles. Not to be outdone the ASSRL scored to take the lead before the last try went to the 18s. Final score 20-18 to the NZ Residents 18s. Both teams play again, the 16s during the week and the 18s at the weekend.
