03/09 SPECTATOR INJURED DURING BRAWL AT JUNIOR LEAGUE GAME
A SYDNEY rugby league game was abandoned today when an on-field brawl spilled into the crowd, injuring a teenage spectator and two match officials.
Police want to speak to witnesses to fighting between players and spectators at an A-Grade rugby league match at Wentworthville, in Sydney's west, about 5.20pm (AEST) today.
“A player allegedly assaulted a 13-year-old male spectator and a match official,” a NSW Police spokesman said.
However, no one was seriously injured.
Parramatta Junior Leagues executive officer Terry Rose, who was at the game between Seven Hills and the Auburn Warriors, said two match officials were injured in the secondary fight between players and spectators.
A female match official “has got a bit of a swollen face at this stage”, and a male official injured a hand and twisted an ankle, Mr Rose told Macquarie Radio.A number of Warriors players took off their jumpers before fighting with a section of the crowd that had abused them during an on-field brawl involving 10 opposing players.
A video of the match has been handed to police.
The league said it would take its own disciplinary action once the police investigation was complete. “We've identified a few players who got involved, and a few spectators, from both sides,” Mr Rose said.
Chris, a Seven Hills player, said his team was leading 28-10 late in the match when the on-field brawl broke out - started by an Auburn Warriors player.
“There's been a bit of a melee, and it's settled down, and then this same player has basically walked over (into the crowd) and started punching-on with whoever he could find,” Chris told Macquarie Radio.
One player reportedly tried to throw a spectator out of a grandstand.
