Despite just returning from a tour of New Zealand, Orange’s Daniel Mortimer hasn’t finished his Australian representative duties this year. But he must also find time to complete his higher school certificate. |
DAN’S HONOURS KEEP ON COMING
Story & Photo By : MICHELLE COOK
ORANGE’S Daniel Mortimer helped the Australian Schoolboys rugby league team to an undefeated tour of New Zealand on the weekend but it won’t be the last time he wears the green and gold.
Mortimer played in the Australian side’s 40-20 and 24-12 wins over the New Zealand under 18s last week with their second victory being played out on Saturday.
The James Sheahan student is already back at home studying for his higher school certificate but days after he finishes his exams he’ll represent the Australian Institute of Sport in a tour of England and France.
The year 12 student said he cannot wait to wear the green and gold again.
“It was an unbelievable trip,” Mortimer said of touring New Zealand.
“We were the first Australian Schoolboys side to go to New Zealand and be undefeated. It was a solid team and we all got along really well.”
Mortimer played the first game at full-back for Australia and achieved his goal of scoring a try. His team-mate decided to run the ball on the last tackle and put through a grubber kick which Mortimer dived on to score.
The teenager said there was a big build up for the second game as traditionally Australia seemed to win the first game but lose the second.
Mortimer came on after 15 minutes at five-eight and played the rest of the game to help the Aussies to their 24-12 win. The games were a highlight for Mortimer but there were other moments which also stood out.
“Opposing the haka was unreal,” Mortimer said.
“They were about a metre from us before the second game and just screaming at us. That really psyched us up.”
Four days after Mortimer finishes his HSC exams he will fly out to tour with the AIS squad in England and France.
This is the second consecutive year Mortimer has participated in the tour and he is looking forward to spending more time on the football fields overseas.
TWO more Orange boys tasted success in New Zealand on Saturday with Scott Rosser and Marc Slingsby helping the NSW Country under 16s to a 34-24 win over the Taranaki Region.
The victory comes after the side prepared on the NSW Central Coast with a trial match against the Queensland Academy of Sport Development Squad last week.
The NSW Country boys were consistent in all aspects of the game to win 30-6. |
G4 CALLS FOR COACHES
Story By : Geoff Newling
GROUP 4 Rugby League secretary Ross Hamilton has called for applications for not only its senior, Under 18 and Under 16 sides for next season but also a Group 4 Shield side.
Hamilton said a Shield side, made up of players from the Group 4 Second Division, would be entered in the CRL's Centenary Celebrations.
"There is a competition for Second Division sides," Hamilton said.
"It's the first time we've had a Shield side but they will be entered in the Second Division."
Applications to coach not only the G4 Shield side but the senior, Under 18 and 16 sides close with Hamilton (PO Box 142, Inverell) on November 4.
"It will be interesting to see what sort of side the Second Division teams come up with," Hamilton said.
Last season Luke Taylor coached the senior Group 4 side, Ron Dellar had the 18s and Jamie Gallen was in charge of a talented Under 16s.
Hamilton said while Northern Division (and the other divisional bodies) had been abolished for the new regional structure, the "Northern Division trials" may still be held.
"The three Groups û Group 4, 19 and 21 (who made up Northern Division) û are keen to run trials in that same format next year," Hamilton said.
"But a decision won't be made until after the CRL annual conference in December.
"The three groups are keen to play the trials before going into their new regional competitions.
"It's still only a proposal and up to the individual clubs in their group to say yes or no.
"All the clubs are keen to run the Northern Division pre-season competition again too. That went off well."
Hamilton urged all clubs to also remember to apply to play in Group 4's first and second divisions.
"Applications for that close October 31," he said.
"If anyone needs an application they can contact me."
Hamilton also said Quirindi and Werris Creek clubs may be about to merge.
"There are moves afoot to combine Quirindi and Werris Creek," he said.
"The Creek did it tough in Group 4 first division this year and apparently they have been approached to combine with Quirindi for next season." |
TONGA SHAME YOUNG KANGAROOS
TONGA 44 JUNIOR ROOS 8
Story By : Steve Mascord
UNWANTED Gold Coast centre Lelea Paea scored three tries in Tonga's astonishing flogging of the Junior Kangaroos today - and revealed it could be the last time he ever plays alongside his brothers.
After a close call against Fiji last Friday, the Junior Roos were belted around Teifaiva Stadium in Nakualofa yesterday, conceding nine tries in a 44-8 flogging.
Jim Dymock's Tonga line-up included NRL stars Feleti Mateo, Manase Manuokafoa, Fetuli Talanoa, Tevita Metuisela, Richard Fa'aoso and the Paea brothers, Lelea, Lopini and Mickey.
An emotional Paea posed for photos with his brothers and relatives in the middle of the field at fulltime, saying: "I dont know if I'll be playing NRL next year. I'm looking to play rugby union.
"It could be (our last game). Hopefully my rugby union club will let me come back and play in the World Cup with them.
"It's special playing with your brothers. I grew up playing junior footy with them. This year I went up to the Gold Coast and split with them for the first time."
Lopini was also amongst the scorers in front of a 2500 crowd as Tonga raced to a 28-0 lead at the break.
Australia coach Matt Cameron said the game had been a good hit-out for Tonga's World Cup campaign for next year, but suggested Tonga coach Jim Dymock should have given more local players a run.
"It probably would have been nice to see some of the local players play in this game, in the same way Fiji put their local players in."
But Dymock said the ganme was a good chance for Tongan locals to see their NRL stars in person.
"We've got a game against Fiji coming up so we had a bit of pressure to perform," he said.
The game was also colourful off the pitch.
Both sides were introduced to Tongan princess Lupepauu Fusitua before kick-off, the first half went for 37 minutes because no-one knew how long it should have been and Australian Tim Mannah suffered a serious head cut from coral scattered around the pitch.
Albert Hopoate, brother of John, played his first game in two years after spending time as a Mormon missionary. He is contracted to Sydney Roosters next season.
And it was the first game on Tongan soil for Parramatta star Feleti Mateo, who spent two years as a child in Nakualofa.
TONGA 44 (Lelea Paea 3, Kim Vasi, Fetuli Talanoa, Lei Etuine Sua, Tevita Metuisela, Joel Tuafaao, Lopini Paea tries; Tuafaao 4 goals) JUNIOR KANGAROOS 6 (Tim Moltzen try; Trent Hodkinson goal) at Teifaiva Stadium. Referee: Ben Cummins (Australia). Crowd: 2500.

MALTESE PLAYERS PILE ON PLENTY OF POINTS AGAINST PORTUGAL
Story By : Kylie Stevens
MALTA has taken its first step to greater rugby league things with a a 56-12 victory against Portugal on Saturday night.
In a front of a big crowd at Western Weekender Stadium at St Marys, Malta didn't do their 2013 World Cup aspirations any harm.
They piled on 28 points within 20 minutes to lead 34-6 at half-time.
Portugal's hopes dived a few days before the match when captain and Cronulla Sharks hooker Issac De Gois was ruled out with a hand injury.
All four debutants for Malta scored tries, while Penrith Panthers rookie Jarrod Sammut was a outstanding, backing up from his Jersey Flegg grand final heroics a week before to play a starring role at five-eighth with his general play kicking. It was a bittersweet night for Malta captain Ben Sammut, a former Cronulla first-grader, who played his final match on Australian soil.
The majority of Malta's line-up will form the nucleus of the 2013 World Cup campaign.
Eight players fly to their homeland today to mark the kick off of Malta's domestic rugby league competition. |

UNSTOPPABLE ... members of the triumphant Centrals under-17 team |
CENTRALS STEP UP AGAIN
Story & Photo By : ADAM WATKIN
COUNTLESS number of players end their careers without ever tasting grand final glory.
Some teams barely scrape together enough wins and are prime contenders for wooden spoons.
Others are lucky enough to make deciders but by the fulltime whistle their heads bow in their hands.
For many people sport is only a game but for the Centrals under-17s team – rugby league has played a major part in their life.
The team is a committed outfit and they can back it up with five premierships from five consecutive seasons.
Their impressive record also stands at three losses from only three seasons – a feat any team would be proud of.
"I've just trained them like an A-grade side and they have responded by becoming a tremendous team," Centrals coach Tony Martin said.
The Centrals mentor has been in charge of the team for the past three seasons and recently inspired them to their fifth consecutive grand final win over Brothers 26-20.
Martin, who has coached A grade teams from Darwin to southeast Queensland, said there was just something `special' about his crop of Centrals juniors.
The team beams with natural talent and has eight players signed to NRL clubs.
Chris Eade (Wests Tigers), Simeon Fuller (Wests Tigers), Ray Thompson (Cowboys), Ben Henaway (Cowboys), Jared Huston (Cowboys), TJ Faagutu (Newcastle) and Troy Paget (Gold Coast) have all been rewarded with contracts while Jordan Bein and Liam Kersevani will head to Queensland Cup team Wynnum Manly next year.
"When I first had them we only had three players signed to the Cowboys in the under-15s and now there are more and it has been great to watch the whole team develop," Martin said. "And I mean the whole idea about coaching is to develop the best out of the players."
Martin said he had gained a lot of pleasure from watching players develop including lock Royce Wicherts.
"He was a bench player when I first started coaching the team and now he has ended up with the best and fairest award for this year," he said.
The team prides itself on its preparation and training which has included anything from aerobics to jogs up Castle Hill.
"We really put a lot of variation into training and they have come out fitter, stronger and their skill level is quite good," Martin said.
Following their remarkable strike rate over the past three seasons, Martin said his hardest task had been to keep the team focused.
"It was very hard to build intensity for every game so before each match I had to give them little goals to reach."
The 2007 Centrals under-17s team: Dion Geegee, Jordan Bien, Mettassa Zaro, Ben Henaway, Mathew Corradi, Justin Zimmerman, Codee Langton, Troy Paget, Simeon Fuller, Rowen Kane, Royce Wicherts, TJ Faagutu, Chris Eade, Cody Close, Aidan Jenkins, Vic Haydan, Liam Kerservani, Joji Dabea, Les Aldridge, Paul Sue, Jarrard Huston, Ray Thompson, Tony Martin (coach), Peter Eade (manager). |
FAR WESTERN ACADEMY of SPORT RUGBY LEAGUE HOST CRONULLA SHARKS IN NYNGAN
Story By : FWAS ourfooty MEDIA
The Far West Academy of Sport has opened up another development link with the Cronulla Sharks.
The Sharks were unable to travel at Easter to the Nyngan Challenge but were true to their word and brought a 14’s side to Nyngan to take on the FWAS junior squad.
In planning their end of year program the Sharks saw this tour as a fantastic opportunity for their boys to learn about the bush and finish off their 2007 season.
The U14’s Cronulla Sharks Junior Development Squad defeated the FWAS side in what was a great game at Larkin Oval on Saturday, 6 October.
The Cronulla side were really tested and won 28 – 12, but the score was not a true reflection of how close the game was.
The Cronulla squad has been staying in Nyngan since Thursday 4th October up at the showground and enjoyed a couple of farm visits on Friday and Saturday morning where they learnt a lot about the bush culture.
“The farm visits have been great, as some of our boys haven’t been past the mountains and the chance to experience and see how a farm operates is an eye opener for them,” said Ken Fitzgerald, Cronulla tour organiser.
There were two curtain raisers to the main game, with Nyngan taking on Brewarrina in U12’s and U14’s.
To enhance to opportunity to see the Cronulla match, players from around the district were invited to play in the teams, with players coming form Cobar, Bourke and Gilgandra.
In the U12’s Nyngan proved too strong beating Brewarrina 30-16, and in the 14’s Nyngan also claimed the victory winning 28 – 8.
The main game was where the Sharks took on the FWAS, which was at times a fiery clash.
The FWAS started really well and were pressuring the Sharks line but couldn’t capitalise on their opportunities.
The Sharks opened the scoring and were never headed for the rest of the match.
The Sharks won 28 – 12, but the score line could have been a lot closer if the FWAS had have held onto the ball for longer and made the most of their opportunities.
Les Davidson, former South Sydney and Cronulla player and Australian representative, was on hand to present the awards of man of the matches to the FWAS team.
Matt Langby, Jordan Hay and Jarrod Tamatea were the three best for the FWAS side.
“The boys really stuck it to their more fancied opponents and should have score a couple more tries which would have put the pressure on the Sharks, said Steve Easman, Assistant FWAS coach.
“But credit to the Sharks, they defended really well and took the opportunities when they came,” he said.
Former Sydney Roosters hardman Steve Hardy, the Sharks coach echoed Steve’s sentiments.
“That was a really tough game, if not the toughest our boys have played this year, and credit to the FWAS side who really had us under the pump for periods of the game, but our boys dug deep and held on for the win.”
The Cronulla side enjoyed their time so much that they can’t wait to bring their squad out here again next year to both play against the FWAS and experience some of the bush experience.
“We have had a great three days in Nyngan and the people here have been nothing but helpful and very welcoming.
We would like to thank the Nyngan community, especially Col Wright, Head FWAS coach, the Nyngan Junior Rugby League, Trevor Redman for all the work that went into developing the tour.
The Sharks look forward to a visit in 2008 from the FWAS Squad.
On Friday 12th October the academy Open League squad are travelling to Newcastle for a match against the Newcastle Knights 17 years development squad.
This match sees the end of the 2007 FWAS league program.
Trials for 2008 are set down for the 1st & 2nd December in Warren – all players aged 14 to 16 years are welcome to attend the trials... | SEE THE ACTION | |

STANLEY PICKED TO PLAY FOR THE KIWIS
Story By : Brad Forrest
As Dragons schoolboy Chase Stanley celebrates the honour of being named in the New Zealand squad to play Australia, as well as the six-week tour of Britain and France, Australian coach Ricky Stuart will warn his team today to be prepared for a very physical Kiwi challenge.
In his first year in the NRL, Stanley, the Endeavour Sports High schoolboy, is on the verge of winning selection in the New Zealand 17 for Sunday week's Test in Wellington.
Manly want their grand-final centre Steve Matai to undergo shoulder surgery as soon as possible and if he doesn't fly to New Zealand, Stanley will come into calculations for a centre or wing spot, along with Bradford centre Shontayne Hape, Simon Mannering, Krisnan Inu, Cronulla's goalkicker Luke Covell and Wests Tigers bullocking Taniela Tuiaki.
In any case, the 17-year-old Stanley will be on a plane to Auckland on Friday, before the team moves to Wellington.
Stuart said he will remind his players that Australia will face a very strong and physical forward pack, led by Roy Asotasi, at today's medical, where a handful of Origin players, including Cronulla's Paul Gallen (shoulder) hope to prove their fitness.
"The Kiwis will miss Sonny Bill Williams, of course, but they have the depth to overcome his and Benji Marshall's absence," Stuart said.
"The pack is formidable; I think they'll use Inu at fullback and they have big players on the edges.
"There hasn't been much between the teams and the result could depend on which team comes up best after a long NRL season.
"In any case, Wellington will probably be windy and wet again, so we'll face a very physical challenge."
While Cronulla's Greg Bird and Paul Gallen are Test debutants, teammate Luke Covell and Chase Stanley are amongst the Kiwis yet to make their debuts, including Melbourne Storm interchange forwards Jeremy Smith and Jeff Lima, Parramatta prop Fuifui Moimoi and South Sydney halfback Jeremy Smith. |

CORPORATE SPORTS AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLBOYS 24 DEF NZ UNDER 18S
Story By : ASSRL
The Corporate Sports Australian Schoolboys won the Second Test against the New Zealand Under 18s at the Rotorua International Stadium, Rotorua, 24 points to 12, to win the series 2 nil and confirm their World Champion status.
The second test match presented a chance for the Corporate Sports Australian Schoolboys to complete their tour undefeated but as expected the task would not be easy.
In wet and greasy conditions in the first half the game became an arm wrestle as both sides tried to gain the ascendency.
Finally in the 30th minute a great try by Kieran Foran and a kick from the sideline, into the wind, by Ben Hunt saw the Australian Schoolboys lead 6 nil at halftime.
The battle in the first half saw few spectators predict that 30 points would be scored in the second half.
Australia again opened the scoring in the second half with a try to Brad Hudson when he backed up a great bomb close to the New Zealand line. This try was also converted by ben hunt and Australia led 12 nil.
Australia were again next to score when Martin Kennedy stormed over the opposition to score next to the posts and with the conversion Australia had established a commanding 18 point lead.. Learn More |

DAVID BROOKS TO COACH U/16 CUBS
Story By : TWT
BALMAIN Tigers have appointed legendary forward David Brooks as their U/16 Harold Matthews Cup coach for the 2008 NSWRL junior representative series.
Brooks, who was inducted into the Tigers Hall of Fame earlier this year, replaces the retiring Stuart Stanton who has stepped down after a three year stint.
He’ll be assisted by premiership-winning Holy Cross U/15 coach Paul Jarvis.
The affable Brooks has already tasted coaching success at Junior Cup level. Back in 1994 he guided the Balmain Jersey Flegg team - featuring top forwards Glenn Morrison and Troy Perkins, centre Michael Withers and fullback Chad Halliday - to a premiership victory over St George at Parramatta Stadium.
MEANWHILE Dundas Shamrocks and Five Dock RSL players dominate the Balmain U/14 Young Guns representative squad for their northern NSW and Queensland tour.
The Shamrocks, who defeated Five Dock RSL in this year’s Balmain Junior League Grand Final, form the nucleus of the 21-man squad.
Experienced mentor Ken Stapleton will coach the team who depart this week for a six day tour that includes matches against Ballina Seagulls and Group 1 at Kingsford Smith Oval in preparation for the Tweed Heads Cup at Southport.
The Tigers’ U/14 rep squad is: Kyle Lovett (captain), Alex Kerti (vice captain), Ray Bechara, Grant Bunch, Jelal Edmonds, Fai Ese, Matt Hassett, Sean Hawken, Ayden Jacovides, Ryan Kelly, Andrew Kirwan, George Moussa, Jermain Nader, Atu Politoni, Curtis Sironen, Morrie Toum, Daniel Vasek, Joseph Touma, Chris Vlahos, Sam Williams, Tom Brennan-Ware. ISRAEL TO STAY AT STORM
Story By : Dave Donaghy
PRIZED rookie Israel Folau has declared his allegiance to Melbourne Storm, quashing suggestions he wanted to return to Brisbane, or go anywhere else, at the end of his current contract.
Folau, the 2007 rookie of the year and leading try-scorer in his first season, capped his meteoric rise in the NRL with a premiership on Sunday night.
There was a suggestion from his Brisbane-based family last week that Folau, 18, was homesick and would consider a move to the Broncos, the club he supported as a child, at the end of next season. But Folau quashed that speculation on Monday.
"I love playing in Melbourne, I love the boys, the club's like a family to me, so I wouldn't want to leave the club," Folau said.
"I know, with the great team we have here, we will continue to work hard and obviously try to get back to the same spot we got to this year."
Folau, a Mormon who is still considering undertaking a two-year religious mission at the end of next year, credited his amazing rise in first-grade to the teachings of Storm coach Craig Bellamy.
He said Bellamy had managed to pick him up at halftime in the grand final after a defensive lapse allowed Manly centre Steve Matai to cut Melbourne's lead to six points with a try moments before the break.
"He told me that if I made a mistake, don't worry about it," Folau said. "Craig just got my head back up and I went out there in the second half and went better. It's like a dream. This time last year I was finishing high school."
Melbourne is expected to try to open contract talks with Folau's manager Isaac Moses in the off-season. Rugby union is likely to chase the teen with Matt Marshall |

BIG BEAR: Greg Florimo gives the MCC trophy to Marist North Shore A grade captain Jeremy Rawson. |
‘SACRIFICES MUST BE MADE’
Story & Photo By : DAMIR GOVORCIN
Former North Sydney rugby league international Greg Florimo told students at Marist College North Shore last week that the “right choices and sacrifices need to be made” to achieve success in and outside of school.
Greg was special guest speaker and awards presenter at the college’s winter sports assembly, where the Bears’ legend recalled some of the fond memories of his stellar 12-year NRL career.
Named in the Bears’ team of the century, Greg played 285 first grade games – a club record – and also represented NSW in four State of Origin matches, and Australia in four Tests.
He is the current chief executive officer of the North Sydney Bears, which has a team in the NSW Premier League competition, and is one of the driving forces behind getting the foundation club back into the NRL some time in the future.
Sharing his wisdom and experience, Greg addressed the students at the assembly saying: “You must have desire and the right attitude as well as talent to succeed.
“As young rugby league players and sportsmen you are now facing tough decisions in your life.
“You have to make the right decisions, make sacrifices and have the self discipline to follow these things through, monitoring your diet, exercise and sleep.
“Self discipline and making sensible choices of course applies not just to your sporting life, but particularly as young men in the world today.
“It applies to your life inside and outside of school.”
Greg went on to present the winter sports teams with their awards, including the A grade league side which took out the Metropolitan Catholic Colleges (MCC) premier trophy.
“It must be said also that all of you boys receiving awards and recognition would not have made these achievements had it probably not been for your parents,” said Greg.
“Mums and dads spend their weekends running you to sporting matches and training nights.
“So when you go home tonight give your mum a big hug.”
Sports co-ordinator Peter Giles says the college “punches above their weight” while competing in the MCC competitions.
“It must be noted that the college while playing in the MCC competitions is more often than not up against bigger older boys from much larger schools, who would often be rejecting the same number of players from their selection as Marist College North Shore has in total to choose from,” he said.
“Marist hasn’t never fielded a team in any sport in the MCC, showing the discipline and dedication that our teams display.”
Jeremy Rawson, captain of the A Grade league side, praised the effort and commitment of the players during their undefeated season.
“We worked really hard all season and all the players and coaching staff should be extremely proud of their achievements,” he said.
“To have a league legend like Greg Florimo present us with the trophy really made it all the more special.” |

HIGH HOPES FOR MALTA
Story & Photo By : Kylie Stevens
Malta isn't a country normally associated with rugby league, but the Maltese Rugby League Association hopes to change that.
Sydney-based players are being targeted as the nucleus of Malta's 2013 World Cup campaign, including Penrith Panthers star rookie Jarrod Sammut.
Fans can check out the wealth of Maltese rugby league talent running around in Sydney when the country tackles Portugal at St Marys Western Weekender Stadium on Saturday night.
Malta will be led by former Cronulla Sharks first grade fullback Ben Sammut (no relation to Jarrod), who will play his final match on Australian soil.
Sharks hooker Issac De Gois has a hand injury and is a 50-50 chance of leading Portugal.
Sammut, 20, has represented Malta twice before - doing it in honour of his stepfather's background.
Next Tuesday, the squad will fly to their homeland to conduct coaching clinics and training sessions ahead of Malta's first ever domestic competition, which kicks off on October 13.
"It will be my first trip to Malta and a chance to learn about my background," Sammut said.
"Hopefully, players like myself can encourage junior talent from the Maltese community to be proud of their heritage."
Malta coach Joe Grima is dedicated to promoting the sport in the Maltese community.
"If we don't do something, we will lose third and fourth generation Maltese," Grima said.
"Some players don't know where Malta is, let alone been there. It is not just about winning on the field but also away from the field."
He said that players such as Sammut are vital to Malta's World Cup aspirations.
"We still have a long way to go if we are to qualify for 2013," he said.
"Our objective is to get a qualifying game to give Malta an opportunity on the world stage."
Grima said that Saturday night's clash is a must-see for rugby league fans. "If you want to see passion in a rugby league match - this is it," he said. - Cost: $10. |

TWIN TRIUMPHS FOR SHARKS
Story & Photo :
IT has been a tough year for Moruya rugby league but it finished in fine style with victory for the under 10 and under 14 Moruya-Tuross teams in the grand finals against Bega at Pambula on Saturday.
The under 10 side outclassed Bega 16-nil to be undefeated premiers with the best defensive record in the Group 16 junior league.
“It was a very pleasing result, especially keeping the opposition to nil in a grand final,” coach Jeff Hopkins said.
“I’ve coached the bulk of this team since the under 7s, so it was a real thrill to see them realise their potential.”
As has been the case all season, the Sharks’ win was based on rock-solid defence.
“Our motto is ‘if they don’t score, we’ll win’, and we’ve built our game around that,” Hopkins said.
The team’s philosophy going into the match was simple.
“I told them it was still another game of footy and for them to have fun and do what they’ve been doing all season,” he said.
Hopkins said Shane Brunhuber and Dakota Feirer excelled in defence and props Zach Ingram and Chris O’Meley did a good job.
“If this side stays together, then they could be very dominant, and might provide some NRL stars; they’d all like to be,” he said.
The Sharks’ tries were scored by Zach Ingram, Hayden Murray and Shane Brunhuber and the goals were kicked by Joshua English and Jacob Zutt.
Cody Hopkins was declared player of the match.
The under 10s might have done it comfortably, but the under 14s did it the hard way when they beat a tenacious Bega side 14-12, and gave coach Paul Desaxe plenty of worry in the process.
“It was edge-of-the-chair stuff; Bega played really good,” he said.
“It wasn’t the prettiest game we’ve played all year, but we got the job done. The boys kept grinding it out and they came out on the right end of the scoreboard in the end.”
Solid defence and ball security have been the basis of success for the team this year, and the team got at least half this right on Saturday.
“We defended well, but we were putting the ball down a lot more than we normally do, and throwing passes when we would normally hold on to the ball. We didn’t complete our sets of six very often and found ourselves defending for a large part of the game,” Desaxe said.
Towards the end of the game the Sharks completed an effective set of six, which brought the ball into Bega’s quarter and out of the danger zone.
“It could have gone either way, but full credit to our team; they have had a great year.”
It was a big day for Matthew Jones, who not only scored two tries and a goal in the win but also was named the group’s under 14 representative player of the year.
Lachlan Gamble scored the other try and Tom Evans was named man of the match. |
WILL MATTHEWS CONFUSED BY TYPO

FOR a split second, boom Tweed Heads backrower Will Matthews thought he had been had.
On Wednesday he received a phone call informing him of his selection in the Junior Kangaroos squad to tour Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand next month.
But when the official team list came out that afternoon his name was nowhere to be seen.
"I was a bit shocked, I didn't know what was going on," said the 19-year-old member of the Seagulls grand final-winning side.
"I thought it might have all been a joke."
But there is nothing funny about the talent 187cm, 95kg Matthews possesses. The incorrect team announcement was an administration error.
Considered a Titan of the future, Matthews is a free running second rower with a deft offload.
Had it not been for good mate and fellow Seagulls young gun Shannon Walker, it probably would have been Matthews grabbing most of the headlines.
"I like watching Sonny Bill play in the way he is looking to offload all of the time," said Matthews.
"So he would have to be one of my inspirations I suppose."
Queensland Cup Player of the Year Walker and Matthews have been running around in the same footy team since the Kyogle Turkeys under-10s.
The were both scouted by the Titans and moved to Palm Beach-Currumbin High before representing Australian Schoolboys on a tour of Europe at the end of last year.
They both started in the Tweed Heads Colts this season before both making their Queensland Cup debuts in round six.
Both Matthews and Walker have trained extensively with the Titans first grade squad and are tipped to make their NRL debuts next year.
"It was good training up with the first grade boys," said Matthews.
The Junior Kangaroos take on Fiji in Suva on October 5, Tonga at Teufaiva Stadium on October 10 and the Junior Kiwis in Wellington on October 14 as the curtain-raiser to the Australia-NZ Test. ( READ OURFOOTY INTERVIEW WITH WILL MATTHEWS ) |
PANTHER WIN FLEGG GRAND FINAL
Story & Photo By : Panthers Media
Jersey Flegg have capped an amazing year taking out the 2007 grand final.
Heading into the grand final the Panthers had played only 2 games in four weeks, a preparation that looked as though it may have finally caught up with them. Both teams took some time to settle in to their own game style and it was the Eels who scored first in the sixteenth minute. They followed that up with another try in the 23rd minute to take a 10-nil lead over the Panthers.
The Panthers struck back in the 30th minute with a try from Wade Graham. That was the catalyst which saw all the points for the Panthers in the first half scored in the last 5 minutes of the half.
The second half was a reflection of the first; Eels scoring first, the Panthers leaving their points scoring to late in the half. Panthers were dealt a scare where a try was disallowed from the In-Goal Judge. In fairness, it was a close call and one which would have normally been adjudicated on by the Video Referee had it been an NRL game.
Panthers only points in the second half were scored by Jarrod Sammut and it was a dazzling try that reinstated Penrith to the lead.
Panthers 19 defeated Parramatta Eels 14
Tries: Wade Graham, Sam McKendry, Jarrod Sammut
Goals: Jarrod Sammut 3/3

MACKAY HIGH DEFEAT
WADE DEACON HIGH
Mackay SHS Tour of England continues with the overnight victory in London at the home of the St. Helen's Saints.
(cool , fine with a light cloud)
We travelled on a council bus to visit the St Helens RLF club this morning. We were met there by Gordon Pennington from the clubs support staff.
Gordon was fantastic with the boys talking with them about all facets of the Saints success over the last few years. Gordon brought out three of the major trophies that the club holds at the moment, the Challenge Cup, the World Club Champions Cup and the BBC Team of the Year Trophy.
The touring party were all able to look closely and get their pictures taken with all the silverware. Gordon then took the boys to the player’s dressing room, the weights room and out into the stands.. Learn More |
SCHOOLBOY LINES UP FOR TEST AGAINST NZ
Story By :
BOOM Mackay youngster Ryan Williamson is set to be pitched into the game of his life in Auckland today.
The promising 17-year-old is likely to be cast into the fray of a trans-Tasman test when Australia's open schoolboys side collides with their New Zealand adversaries at Mt Smart Stadium.
"They're physically bigger, physically stronger and we have to give them as much respect as we can," Williamson said from New Zealand yesterday.
"We'll be faster around the ruck, and we'll play the whole game," he said.
"Sometimes the Kiwis tire out a bit."
A bullocking back-rower for school side St Patrick's College, Williamson was used on the wing for the Queensland open schoolboys side at the recent national championships in Townsville.
He also starred for the Queensland under 17 team in a State of Origin curtain-raiser against New South Wales in June.
Contracted to the Sydney Roosters, Williamson has been highly touted as a rugby league star in the making, impressing many pundits with his hard-running.
His ability to break the defensive line and find ways to the try-line have him clearly marked as a NRL player of the future and Australian manager Stephen Duclos admitted the talented three-quarter was likely to be included in the team"s run-on side today.
"I'd say with a fair bit of confidence that Ryan will be named in the starting team; he played very well the other day," he said.
Indeed, Williamson was in the thick of the action when the Simon Huntly-coached team defeated an Auckland academy side 26-10.
Williamson scored three times, including a superb solo 70m effort.
And Duclos predicted the Australians to be fully prepared for their two-Test series against New Zealand.
"They know why they've come here and what they have to do," he said. |
NERVES OF STEEL
Story By : ALISON MOONEY
For some it was their first time in the air and their minds were conjuring all sorts of disasters. But coach Troy Sabin kept his team busy with The North West Star photographer Jake Nowakowski and it seemed to work - for a moment anyway.
The boys will play teams from across the state at the 2007 Tassells Trophy competition, the largest under 14 meet in Queensland. This weekend will also have the first interstate competitors hit the field with three teams travelling to Cairns from Sydney.
“We’ll have a light session on Friday before our three games on Saturday,” Sabin said.
“Then they’ll play two more games on Sunday.”
Local sponsorship meant the team could fly to the competition, freeing up room to watch the NRL grand final on the big screen Sunday before heading back to Mount Isa.
Sabin said that at one stage he considered cancelling the trip, but generous sponsorship from local businesses saved the day.
He thanked all sponsors for their support. |

SCHOOLBOYS WIN FIRST GAME IN NEW ZEALAND
Story By : ASSRL
In their first game of the New Zealand Tour of 2007, the Corporate Sports Australian Schoolboys took on the Auckland Academy team at Mount Smart Stadium, the home of the Auckland Warriors.
The game was a fast and open game and gave the Australians the chance for a strong hitout.
New combinations took a while to develop but the Australians scored first with a great effort by Kieran Foran in the 10th minute of the game.
This was then followed by some great handling from Ben Ridge and he crashed over in the 25th minute for a try that was converted by Ryan Hansen.
The first half closed with a spectacular 70 metre try to Ryan Williamson which saw Australia lead 16-6 at halftime after the conversion by Ryan Stig.
The second half saw some handling errors from the Australians and the Auckland side pounced to bring the score back to 16 -10.
Another try to Ryan Williamson in the 45th minute saw Australia move ahead 20 -10.
Constant pressure from Auckland saw the Australians stretched in defence but once again they withstood all that could be thrown at them by the Auckland side.
In the 52nd minute Ryan Williamson scored his third try and following the conversion by Ryan Stig the score moved out to 26 -10 in favour of the Australians.
After the game Troyden Watene was awarded the Man of the Match award from the Auckland Academy side.
The Australian team now prepare to meet the New Zealand Under 18 team in a two test match series beginning on Saturday 29 September at Mount Smart Stadium # 2.
Corporate Sports Australian Schoolboys 26 (Tries: Ryan Williamson 3, Ben Ridge and Kieran Foran Goals: Ryan Stig 2, Ryan Hansen 1) defeated Auckland Academy 10. |

ENGLAND U18s SMASH SERBIAN U21's
BARLA Under 18s got their tour of Serbia off to a very impressive start with a comfortable 76-0 victory over Serbia Under 21s on Sunday afternoon.
The extra strength and ability of the young British side proved too much for a game, but outgunned Serbian side.
BARLA opened the scoring in the ninth minute when slick passing stretched the Serbian defence and centre Dean Thompson scored in the left hand corner. Second row Tony Burns landed a fine conversion.
Five minutes later a superb bullet pass from scrum half Chris Forster found half back partner Tyrone Dalton at speed and the stand off sprinted through a gap to score. Burns goaled, and then shortly afterwards a short ball from Forster put second row Jon Young through to score an unconverted try.
Forster continued to mesmerize the Serbian side and he side-stepped through their defence before finding Dalton on his inside to score, and then Serbia lost possession in their own half and Forster picked up the loose ball and found winger Jon Leather who raced clear to score. Burns converted on both occasions to put his side firmly in command at 28-0.
Just before the half hour mark a long ball from Burns found winger Ben Naylor out wide and he broke through the line before finding Thompson on his inside to score, and then four minutes before the break a kick on the last tackle by Forster hung in the in-goal area and loose forward Luke Sandland reacted fastest to collect and score. Burns goaled the latter to make the half time score 38-0.
BARLA continued their onslaught eight minutes into the second half when a penalty close to the Serbian line saw quick hands from substitute Joe Budd and Dalton put Thompson over for his hat trick.
Four minutes later substitute Jon Walker made a fine break down the middle, and he found Thompson before receiving the ball back from him and sending Naylor clear try score under the posts. Substitute Andy Kay tagged on the extras.
Great play by Budd saw him go down the blind side and find full back Ashley Huck in support who put Thompson away for his fourth try, and then on the hour good work by Forster in his own half found Burns who put Thompson clear on a fifty metre run to score his fifth try of the afternoon. Burns converted both tries to make the score 60-0.
The next BARLA try came when slick passing between Forster, Burns and Thompson created acres of space for Naylor to exploit and score, Burns adding the conversion and then prop forward Lee Fewliss broke from inside his own half and raced fifty metres before unselfishly passing to Budd who scored.
Two minutes from time Naylor received the ball on his own forty metre line and raced sixty metres to complete his hat trick. Forster added the conversion to complete a superb 76-0 victory.
The man of the match was awarded to BARLA scrum half Chris Forster. He was very well supported by prop forwards Brett Phillips and Lee Fewliss, centre Dean Thompson and second row Jon Young.
The Under 18s now have a 9s tournament on Wednesday against local Serbian sides before playing their second test next Saturday against Serbia Under 23s. |
