ONE UP ONE DOWN FOR JUNIOR SHARKS
Story By : Cronulla Sharks
The Sharks SG Ball team began their season with a win, while the Matthews Cup side was beaten in round one matches played against the Central Coast at Woy Woy Oval.
Desite clocking off late in the second half, to the frustration of coach Dave Howlett, the Ball Sharks triumphed 34-26, while it was the Central Coast who came away convincing 20-4 winners in the Matthwes Cup clash.
The Matthews Cap match began in torrential rain and it was the Sharks opponents who handled the poor conditions the best, jumping out to a 14-0 lead at the half time break.
Revved up by the coaching staff the under-16 Sharks began the second period much better and unlike the first 30-minutes managed to control the ball and put some pressure on the Central Coast team as they battled to get back into the contest.
Despite their best efforts however it was the Coast who would be next to score, a barge over try under the posts taking them out to a 20-0 lead, an advantage which would prove a deficit too high for the Sharks to claw back.
A try out wide to Connor Tracey, laid on as a result of a strong charge from back rower Marcus Pappas, the only score for the Cronulla team.
In the SG Ball it was a Sharks side that played in patches, however a lack of concentration and ball control over the entirity of the match left the Cronulla boys with the two competition points but plenty of work to do ahead of their round two match next weekend.
The Sharks scored some spectacular tries but on the negative side conceded a few soft tries to their oponents, with the teams going to half time with Cronulla in front 18-10.
Kicking into gear early in the second period the Sharks raced away to a match winning 28-10 lead, but late tries to the Central Coast made it interesting before a solo 70-metre effort from interchange hooker Matt Hood sealed the result.
Both Sharks district rep teams now head to St Marys Stadium next Saturday for matches against the West Sydney Academy, the Matthews Cup kicking off at 6.00pm, followed by the SG Ball at 7.30pm.
